Added 2023-12-18 21:00:03 +0000 UTCI don't often say this, but I have to admit that this wasn't a favourite episode of mine. Even saying that now, I do feel guilty because there WERE good parts and good moments, but I personally found the story slightly confusing on my first watch. When editing it, it did make more sense to me the second time around! Some days I'm just not the brightest spark, so it's no doubt me to blame here I think 🤣
The highlight for me was seeing Angel and Wesley dancing. It was.... perfect 💜

When Angel and crew decide, en masse, to go confront evil at the spa, they walk out together with Angel in the lead and everyone else following in a 'V' formation. Watch for this to happen again and again for the rest of the series.

Not only do we get to see Angel and Wesley dance, but we get Angel using a grappling hook and attempting to use a cell phone. Plus, Wesley slipping on the coffee beans will always be funny. On a more serious note, I think we get some good insight on how Angel sees himself in the world as a vampire that could suddenly turn evil. The line "Still dead... know the feeling" that Angel says after he fails to be a normal person is especially telling. We also see Angel freaked out by being aroused by Jhiera. The problem is that all we get is insight, there is not really any resolution or dialogue about it. Cordelia and Wesley also have some character building in this episode, but I won't talk about it.

The metaphor - genital mutilation and its use in oppression - is rather obvious, but that doesn't bother me. I love that the show dared tackle this subject. Even more than 20 years later, it is still too much of a taboo IMO. This needs to be talked about to make it stop. I also love that Jhiera, when confronted with a choice between her people and our gang, chooses her people. Unlike Angel with his plot armour, she doesn't have the luxury of doing the "right thing". Instead, she chooses the course most likely to help the people she's chosen to protect. To me, that makes her more interesting than Angel.

Wesley looks like he's having some kind of seizure, and Angel, well all I can say is WOW!!! 🤣 I bet they had such a great time filming that day! (Truthfully, I think Wesley is actually a better dancer than me 😂)
