Doctor Who 2x05 Rise of the Cybermen | Full Reaction

We have another two-part episode! I really like the two part episodes. As much as it is frustrating to have the episode end just when it's SO getting good, I love that the writers can give more time to the story and they aren't just rushing to get through to the end of the episode. They must care about the story and the characters and really want them to devote time and love to each episode. It's wonderful!

I really liked this one! It was fun seeing the Cybermen and I recognised them immediately from being in the display cases way back when we met the Dalek with the 9th Doctor. I said "Tardis" instead of "Dalek" due to excitement so hopefully that is forgivable 🤣

I hope everyone is having a lovely week so far 💜😊

Doctor Who 2x05 Rise of the Cybermen | Full Reaction

Comments

The Cybermen are one of the Trio of classic villains. That's 2 down 1 to go. They've been my favourite as often as the Daleks and the other one(s) In Nu Who, this era they're literally the brain in a Robot body, I prefer the earlier frankenstein like ones, some were even seen being made which was a longer, in some ways more harrowing medical process. The designs change frequently however these Cybermen are not canonical Cybermen, the originals were a seperate race to humans, more details on that later so I'll shut up for now. :)

Suddenly Frogs

Sorry, not true. Inspiraton for the Borg is taken from a scifi character called called LORD DREAD.

The Dog Walker

I just watched my outro again and I think it's not too harsh about Rose so phew, I will leave it alone 🤣 MAYBE. haha

Juliette Gaming

Same here I love all the characters now 😂 I don’t think I actually dislike anyone. Even the lovely Jackie lol What I love about Doctor Who in general is everyone feels very real. Both Rose and Mickey and the Doctor kinda acted without thinking this episode and it got them in trouble. Rose going to find her parents because her original home life is miserable. Mickey going to find his grandma because he failed her. And the Doctor prioritizing Rose over Mickey. This show has such realistic characters. And realistically people lead with their emotions usually before anything logical 😂

Alec Campo

It's youtube though... some people get mad with me if I a) haven't realised one millisecond of information or b) guess something correctly and then accuse me of seeing it all before 🤣 I love that you opened my eyes a bit with Mickey's AU grandma. I didn't even think badly of it, just "Awww that's lovely". It IS similar to Pete and Rose. I guess except that Rose only exists in dog form haha. I love Rose and Mickey and the Doctor. I love everyone, me!

Juliette Gaming

I wouldn’t really worry about an uproar 😂 a lot of people actually agree with you, but I was just saying my piece. I think the important part is that this is an ongoing show and there’s always room for character growth haha. You have every right not to like Rose for an episode. I didn’t like Mickey for the entire first season so who am I to say 😂

Alec Campo

I might re-watch my outro and see if it too harsh as your comment has made me fear 100 similar comments on YouTube 🤣 especially as in the next episode, I change my mind... it's not worth the potential uproar haha

Juliette Gaming

That’s fair lol and yeah Mickey is forgotten about mostly because Rose and the Doctor act like a couple lol so he’s kind of the third wheel. It’s definitely unfortunate, I don’t think anyone is being purposely mean though. Besides the doctor calling him names lol.

Alec Campo

I do find it really sad the way that Mickey is treated. I love that he decided to be brave and come with them, but it really is a third wheel situation and it always will be 😢 Mickey is a great guy, smart, and loyal. I hope there is a good outcome for him in the future 💜

Juliette Gaming

Yeah, I may have been a little too harsh on Rose in this one! In the next episodes outro, I explained that I was a little too harsh and then gave some reasons for why what she did was valid. So I have changed my opinion a little there to one a lot more understanding. I still think that Mickey is treated poorly though, and made fun of on a regular basis!

Juliette Gaming

Hey so late comment but I don’t think Rose was being particularly bad here? All she did was laugh at the Doctor and Mickey being stupid. She was already in a giddy mood it made sense why she found the situation funny. She clearly still cares about him, and even later expresses how she takes him for granted. The way she full on hugged Ricky should be enough to show she does still care about him. Also her reaction to her parents is understandable as well. It may be easy to see the difference because we’re watching a show, but think of yourself in an alternate universe where people you know are there. You’d probably accidentally talk to them like you knew them. I know if I saw my dad in an alternate universe I would slip and act too casual around him. Overall I don’t really agree that Rose is acting selfish or wrong here. Her job is not to babysit Mickey and the only thing she did in this episode was laugh at one situation, and last episode they got along perfectly. The Doctor is more responsible for forgetting about Mickey but he doesn’t seem to get any of the flack, it’s mostly Rose who gets it, which isn’t really fair. Just my opinion lol. Also why is it a good thing that Mickey went to visit his grandma…but not Rose with her father? Mickey could’ve literally been in major trouble by doing what he did. Unlike Rose he never checked if he existed in this universe. So he easily could’ve walked in on another version of himself with his grandma. Same kind of behavior as Rose but again that’s different somehow? I’m just a little confused lol. Sorry to keep adding to this lol but she didn’t recognize the plastic Mickey in episode 1 because she was distracted with the doctor stuff and having her job literally blown up. She rightly starts crying when she figured out that wasn’t him and scolds the doctor for not caring about him. She only leaves when she finds out the tardis can time travel, meaning it wouldn’t be that long until she came back. She was only a year late again because the Doctor landed wrong.

Alec Campo

I so agree with you about Mickey in the first episode being made of plastic and clearly a duplicate, but Rose didn't even realize. I think Mickey's character arc has been really interesting. In episode one he was terrified at the thought of going with the Doctor. He was literally cowering in the corner. Then he was a little braver, and wanted to help but told the Doctor he was still too scared, and could the Doctor pretend he isn't allowed to travel with them to save him the embarrassment of admitting he is scared in front of Rose. By the start of season 2, he's now calling them with tips about alien activity. He's the "man with the plan" but also the "tin dog." He still shows fear (when the rats fall on him) but he's facing his fear. By the end of that episode he is ready to take on a challenge and see the universe. But how sad that he's been treated like the third wheel. Maybe he can learn how to be more assertive from Ricky?

Hi Julie The Cybermen first appeared in the whoniverse in 1966 in a story called The Tenth Planet and was broadcast over 4 episodes of 20 to 25 mins. This story marked the departure of William Hartnell from the show due to his failing health, and the first regeneration of The Doctor from William Hartnells version to Patrick Troughtons as the 2nd Doctor.

Colin 3of5

OMG mind blown!! What if the Doctor did know about Ricky?! AMAZING!!! And THAT'S why he kept poking fun at saying the wrong name! GENIUS!!!!

Juliette Gaming

Agreed!!! I'm so glad it's not just me who thought that. She should definitely know this by now!!!

Juliette Gaming

I have watched absolutely nothing of Star Trek 😅

Juliette Gaming

I could have got a perfect moment there with recognising the Cybermen head, but noooooo my brain had to be silly and say the wrong word 🤣🤣

Juliette Gaming

Oh PLEASE let Vicky be Mickey but in an old fashioned dress and bonnet 🤣 I can see a change in the patreon look as well. It looks more modern with the font they've changed to, but it's going to take me time to get used to it 😑

Juliette Gaming

One of my favorite aspects of DW is how an idea that appears as a throwaway will suddenly come into focus and change the whole narrative. Example: Ricky & Mickey. In Series One, an amusing gag at the expense of a secondary character. In Series Two - BOOM! An examination of parallel worlds. Questions abound! Did the Doctor know about Ricky? Was he somehow aware of the parallel Cyber-world? Is there a version of Mickey/Ricky in every parallel world? Are there Cybermen in every parallel world, and is Mickey/Ricky fighting in all of them? All of this from one silly little joke in Series One. *Golf clap* Well done, writers.

Martin Holt

Great reaction! Can't wait for the next episode. I always feel bad for Mickey and I agree with Rose when she talks to Jackie I always cringe a little, like I love you Rose but come on you should know by now. I'm glad you got on the cybermen. ❤️

Hot Space 🇬🇧

By the way, if you’ve ever watched Star Trek Next Generation you may be familiar with the Borg - a society of cybernetically enhanced humans bent on converting others. They were in fact inspired by the original Cybermen from Doctor Who.

Lloyd B

Glad you recognized the Cybermen from that exhibit in the Dalek episode! Like the Daleks, they have their origins way back in the 1960s with the first Doctor, but unlike the Daleks they tend to “evolve” and develop in design. Their original incarnation I feel was much creepier, as they seemed a little less robotic with clearly human limbs, and an eerie mechanical sing-song voice. They very much feed into body horror and the fear that as we “enhance” ourselves through prosthetics and reliance on AI we lose our humanity. In a sense, they are the opposite of Daleks, who are extreme emotion - mainly pure hate and fear, and all about racial purity. Essentially Nazis. Cybermen divest themselves of all emotion, and are pure logic to the extreme, and rather than kill everyone else want to convert (“upgrade”) all others to become like them in a soulless utopia. Essentially Communists. So looking forward to part two!

Lloyd B

Whats a doccy?

The Dog Walker

Oh thank goodness... sometimes when I express even the slightest dislike of something, I worry I might upset someone and also that I'm literally the ONLY person that thinks that way! Knowing others feel the same makes me feel so much relief 😅 I've noticed a slight difference in Rose's behaviour in this series compared to the first. I love her and her carefree nature, but not the way she can laugh at poor Mickey so easily. He really is treated badly and he's a great guy ☹️

Juliette Gaming

First Mickey, now Ricky, maybe we'll meet a Vicky one day! Completely off topic but the Patreon app just updated to a new UI and I really don't like it (I thought they had got rid of messages for a minute as they're now hidden away).

Neil Hanson

I agree that rose in this episode is acting pretty selfishly and rash. I like that her character is flawed, though. However, I hate the way micky is treated. They really do take him for granted

x_Rhi_x

And greater intelligence than the doctor? Don't let him hear you say that 😜

Juliette Gaming

It's obviously connected! It's a delightful nod to the 9th Doctor and I adore it. It was a highlight of the episode for me 😅

Juliette Gaming

Juliet, a question. The underground/activist/hero mickey in this story is called rickey. 9 used to purposely call mickey rickey. Coincidence? Or is there a greater intelligence at work here? I mean, greater than the Doctor.

The Dog Walker

It's so interesting! To give away 10 years of your life is huge to someone like us. Maybe it's more like a month to him.

Juliette Gaming

Silly me said the wrong word in the moment of excitement 🤣🤣 I LOVED the connection between the Rickey in this universe because of the 9th Doctor! It was SO funny hahaha. Poor Mickey!!

Juliette Gaming

The average lifespan of a Doctor is 3 seasons...

The Dog Walker

Yay 😊😊

Juliette Gaming

Fixed it!

The Dog Walker

I think all stories should be 2 parts. If they get a script that easiy fits in one episode, round file it. Remember the series "24" and Jack Bauer? Each season was 20 + episodes each one being one hour in a single day of a story that was only 24 hours long. And it was one of th most successful shows of its day. They seemed to manage quite well.

The Dog Walker

I'm really impressed you remembered the cyberman head from the dalek episode. The cybermen are iconic doctor who monsters. I wouldn't say they compare to the daleks, but they are definitely up there. It's kind of funny that Mickey is called Rickey in this universe because the 9th doctor used to call him Rickey.

Lime Pie

The Doctor's life expectancy is a great question. The answer, like much in Who is complicated. 🤣 It greatly depends on how long each generation lasts for. It was established during Classic that Timelords do have a limit to the number of times they can regenerate. The Doctor is currently about three quarters the way through their cycle. Each cycle could potentially last much longer than any human lives for. Also, the figure of The Doctors age has changed a bit over the years. What we established in the last series is they are in the early 900's.

Daryl

No worries! I'm gonna watch in bed on my phone,so I cant have the episode playing and your reaction to the full length at same time sadly. Xx

x_Rhi_x

No worries

Dragon

The two parters are great! They really show that the writers love and adore the story and take care and time with each episode, not rushing to fit it all in within 45 minutes!

Juliette Gaming

Silly me forgot to include it! I've edited the post now and it's here https://youtu.be/CSXNH-7wxXU 💜

Juliette Gaming

Let me know if you continue to have issues! Maybe try another browser?

Juliette Gaming

Oooh sorry lovely! I must have forgotten to paste it in. Thank you for letting me know! I've edited the post now and it's here https://youtu.be/CSXNH-7wxXU 💜

Juliette Gaming

Can't get it to play..

The Dog Walker

Hey jules! Do you have the edited YouTube version please? I dont see a link :)

x_Rhi_x

No YouTube edit? (I can watch the full one I'm just curious)

Dragon

Some of my favorites are the two parters. I like the cybermen better than the daleks...still goofey but their voices arent as annoying and their weapons dont include toilet plungers paint rollers.

The Dog Walker

Much like the Daleks, the Cybermen have a long history in Who. But unlike the Daleks they have changed in appearance a number of times during their depictions. It will fun to see you enjoy their first NuWho appearance.

Daryl

WEEEEE!! I'm so excited, evening once again sorted watching along with you. So happy to see your love for Doccy Who growing! <3
