Doctor Who Minisode - Born Again - Children in Need

I absolutely LOVED this minisode! Weirdly, I seem to be able to upload the entire thing to YouTube with no editing or cutting out or blurring? I checked around on YouTube, and a few other reactors have done the same. I'm really not sure, but there's no copyright issues at all with this one. Maybe the BBC forgot to put it in the system 🤣 If ONLY I could do this with all videos! Man, that would be amazing....

There's no full reaction to this one as the YouTube edit IS the full reaction 😸

There’s a popular saying that your entire body replaces itself, cell by cell, every 7ish years. It’s a huge oversimplification many cells only last a few years, and some cells, especially neurons, can last much longer (Radocz will be happy to hear). But Ship of Theseus is a wonderful philosophical exercise. If you were to replace each one of the cells in your body with a functionally equivilent cell, one by one over time, would you or wouldn’t you still be you? Nothing of “you” would still exist but all of “you” would still be there. That being said, it’s not a perfect match for the Doctor’s regeneration. His body gets replaced over and over again, and his personality is often wildly different (after an adjustment period as he finds out who he is) but his memories don’t get replaced at all and he retains all his life experience. p.s. I say you’d still be you in the philosophical example, but how different people answer that question says a lot about their own philosophical or metaphysical outlook.

FYI it worked out OK. The hard part as always is getting it in sync in the first place on two different apps, but once it's running it tracks just fine.

The ship is an analogy. Like comparing a car to a woman. Language is kinda fun that way.

Martin Holt

The ship is an object, the Doctor is a person. Don't compare things belonging to different categories!

Regeneration does recall an old philosophical problem: the Ship of Theseus. Theseus takes a ship out on a long voyage. During the voyage, every single piece of the ship is replaced, one by one, until no original piece remains. When Theseus returns on his ship - Is it still the same ship?

Now that you know about regeneration, go back and watch that scene in the very first episode Rose when the Doctor visits her house. He glances in the mirror (maybe for the first time) “look at those ears!” and then rummages around making whacky comments about various things he picks up (hyper and erractic as a new doctor sometimes is). A great little nod for existing fans while still being a good fun moment for newbies.

As mentioned, this is a nice little bridge between the finale and Xmas special. While not essential, it provides a simple explanation of regeneration, and provides a little context for what’s to come. Rose’s shock and hesitation would be what a lot of new viewers would be feeling, and David Tennant does a great job in these few minutes to reassure both Rose and viewers that he’s still the same Doctor, though maybe slightly different. As a long time viewer since the 60s I’ve come to appreciate and look forward with anticipation any new Doctor, while of course missing the previous one. It’s always a pleasure to see what the new actor has to offer and how they will interpret the role. It’s one of the things that makes this show so special - always changing and adapting, while always remaining the same.

It was SD streaming ($14.99). I hope the timing syncs up!

The mini-series are nice little palette cleansers between seasons. They sometimes add context and additional information, but are mostly fun little spacers. And you'll get to see a LOT more of them.

Martin Holt

I do hope for your enjoyment that I am wrong, but I feel that the frame rates for Stan and Prime will be different. Or did you buy DVD's in the pal format?

Daryl

Oh just a minor note. The new doctor, David has been a fan of the show ever since he was a boy

1 question. Have you ever watched any of the Harry Potter films.

Colin 3of5

the bbc usually does a couple of charity nights a year called comic relief and children in need. the show normally does a minisode to tie in with the night. And while they are usally stand alones, they can also link in to the current story , like the minisode you just watched.

Welcome to your first regeneration. When the doctor regenerates everything gets shaken up before it settles down, it can result in a bit of manic behavior like when he just speeded up the Tardis. remember when I said in my remark after the lone Dalek episode, that it took me a few episodes to get used to Chris as the new Doctor, well you are on the same path, so sit back and enjoy the show

Great reaction .. I just purchased series 2 on Amazon so I can watch along with you. They should pay you a commission. :-) I was thinking of only buying my favorite couple of episodes, but I’m looking forward to the whole journey.

What a great surprise this weekend! I think this mini ep does a great job of answering some basic questions about regeneration. Really looking forward to the Christmas ep this week! I think you’ll enjoy it!

Trey Moore

This minisode is a good bridge between the finale and the Christmas Special. It helps to explain the beginning of The Xmas special a little. The Doctor is usually a little erratic after after a regeneration. They will mention a particular time period. This is when a timelords body is still settling in the new form.

Daryl

Dr. Who. throughout the series, has several minisodes that are available to all. Usually were originally released during a charity telethon or dvd extra. So many good vibes with this show.
