Doctor Who 1x06 Dalek | Full Reaction

My first time meeting a Dalek! It was kind of cute on the inside? I guess?! A few mixed emotions as I felt sorry for it at the end there, but as it was evolving and changing after Rose's interactions, it's no surprise that it gained a softer side. I am not sure if we will see any more Dalek's in the future, but if we do, I am worried for the Doctor's reaction!
There was an incredibly powerful scene in this episode with the Doctor being so worked up, that you could see a droplet of spit on his lip! That was SUCH a stand-out moment for me! I think he's incredible. I know there are multiple doctors, but I don't know if I will like a doctor as much as this fellow. I feel he is MY doctor. I don't want to lose him to someone else, and I'm already dreading that 😭
I hope you enjoy this episode!

As I said on YouTube, I am enjoying your reactions to the episodes and love that you're getting passionate about the show.

Russell Davies, the producer of this current series, made the IMHO excellent decision to maintain continuity of the series, so that the music, the TARDIS, and the enemies, including the Daleks, all looked pretty much like they did in the classic series. So yeah, the Dalek in this episode is almost identical to the Daleks from the very beginning.

A bit of Dalek history (from GENESIS OF THE DALEKS): the Daleks were created on the planet Skaro to serve in a war between two city-states, Thal and Kaled. A Kaled scientist, Davros, wanted a perfect soldier, one who sought to kill anything that wasn't perfect. Unfortunately for the Kaleds (and everything else in the universe, including Davros,) the Daleks (an anagram of 'Kaled') took their instructions too literally and started killing everything that wasn't Dalek. The Doctor, along with his companions Sarah Jane and Harry, sealed the Daleks away. But not for long.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, ;0)

That's comforting! I'll try and see it as it's the "same" Doctor, just with a different face and voice and mannerisms 😅 It might take me a bit to get used to it, but I'm sure everyone can relate with that. You'll have to put up with me until I get used to a new one 🥹

Hi Juliette
you have been saying that you are wondering if you will like future Doctors.
While each new actor brings there own style to the Doctor, there is only 1 Doctor. I know that sounds confusing but it is true.
when the Doctor changes the new Doctor retains all of the memories of the previous Doctors. The basic personality and ideals of The Doctor remain the same.
while each new actor brings there own style to the role, like dressing in a different style of clothing, like for example changing into a skinny pin stripe suit, the core of the Doctor remains the same. The passions, and warmth that you see in Chris you will see in your "future" Doctors.
I remember that it took me a few episodes to get used to Chris playing the Doctor when he grabbed Rose's hand and said to run, that was my introduction to Chris.
By the time of the Slytheen episodes I had enough of an understanding of Chris's take of The Doctor to get me liking what I saw and by the end of the third world war, he had me happy that he was The Doctor

Plus, Rose is 19 and The Doctor is...older. She is an adult an any western jurisdiction.

Neil, I totally get it! I don't want to upset people so I try to choose my words carefully when I think it's going to be something controversial, but honestly... it's a fictional TV show. If we can accept time travelling aliens without blinking our eyes and vampires and praying mantis teachers... then accepting something like an age difference should also be no biggie, to use a word Buffy would use! Sometimes you just have to let go a little and just enjoy the story. Life is far too serious and a drag at times... I'm wanting to lose myself in the fantasy world of these shows and just have a good time!
In Australia, our age of consent here is 16 so to me, Rose and Buffy are well within their rights to choose who they want to date at that age. Have you ever tried telling a teenage girl NOT to do something 🤣 It's not easy!!
The Dalek kinda looks like the R2D2 robot to me! I have NO idea about Star Wars though so please no hate hahaha I like the Dalek but yeah, he is a little retro in design 😆

I know the Daleks are supposed to be terrifying but personally, I just can't get over how dumb they look (I'm sorry Who fans). That's not to say I don't like them, just that I wish they could update the design to a new & improved version. Still, that was a great episode that showed a side of the Doctor I hadn't seen up till now.
I'm with you on the age gap issue Juliette. When we're talking about shows such as Doctor Who and Buffy that are totally unrealistic in nature, I think we can look past certain things that would otherwise be strange/wrong if they occurred in a more realistic show. Not everyone feels the same way though, unfortunately, as I had to remove a comment on a Buffy video the other day when one commenter basically called another "a P-word sympathiser who couldn't be trusted around kids" just because they weren't condemning the Buffy/Angel relationship.

I always thought that the Daleks were better in concept than in execution. Of course, given the BBC's famously starved budgets, the crew did a FANTASTIC job all things considered.

A couple of fun facts about the origin of Daleks. As I mentioned, they were the featured antagonists of just the second story of classic DW in 1963, and the first alien species encountered on the show. That story was written by Terry Nation, who went on to write some of the best stories for Doctor Who in the 60s and 70s. Their somewhat art-deco design has remained very much the same since they first appeared on TV. The original concept drawings, though, had them with a mechanical claw at the end of their right arm (and the gun on the left), however the BBC art department didn’t have the funds, t I’m me or expertise to create the claw, so they just stuck a plunger on their arm instead, and it’s stayed that way ever since. But as demonstrated here, they are very capable of using that plunger to deadly effect!
Terry Nation very much conceived of the Daleks as facials or “space Nazis”, with their insistence for racial purity and the extermination of anything and anyone that was different to them. Remember, this was in 1963, only 18 years after the end of WWII, and the horrors of racism were still very much in living memory.
People sometimes make fun of Daleks, but they were a brilliant and daring creation for the time, especially for what was a fledgling children’s TV show.

My first Dalek episode from the classic series was GENESIS OF THE DALEKS. A classic among classics, from the Tom Baker era of DW. BTW, Tom Baker is MY Doctor.

I really hope on future 2 part episodes you either release the first and second episode reactions on the same day or within a few days. It will be actual torture (as well as for you wanting to see what happens next) for us if you don't. There's another creator I'm following who is starting their Doctor Who journey too and they do a double post when it's a 2 part episode, which is something I really appreciate.
I'd love to see 2 Doctor Who posts a week if you can, if not because of time then it's cool 😁

Yes. As the episode here implied, he broke his "no killing" rule during the War and wiped out the Dalek race, having to do the same with his own people "I watched it happen! I MADE it happen!".
In the first episode you watched, there was a little scene where the Doctor looked at his reflection in a mirror in Rose's flat and commented on his appearance as if seeing himself for the first time, implying that after the War he had to change his body. Which is why he was alone before Rose and why he gets so raw over thinking about his people, his planet and the Daleks.

I think that should be fine! For example, if you were to give me general history or information on the TARDIS that most people would know if they've watched the classic, that's fine. I have to say though, I love that I didn't know anything about the Dalek. I think I would prefer to watch this episode not knowing anything about them so it's all a surprise to me, but I assume the Dalek have been in many classic episodes. If people tell me stuff about classic Who, then to be fair, I can't complain too much as the TV show has existed for YEARS! It's a tricky one! Always happy to discuss the current episode at hand, though!

Ok cool that's clear enough. So if our comments inform you of anything that you could have learnt from watching Classic then you are OK with it. 👍🏻
Even if you would have learnt it anyway from Nuwho in future episodes, as it has previously happened anyway. That is the bit I was a bit shaky on. So if it happened in Classic then I'm good to incorporate it in as facts as long as I don't indicate that it is relevant to future episodes. I think that is what you are saying. Do correct me if I am wrong on that.

I feel not alone with these thoughts now 😅 I am SO curious to see if I will actually like future doctors, and if so, how long it takes me to warm up to them. I don't know much of the intricacies of why or how the doctor changes, other than it was a way for the show to have new actors. I'm very interested to see just how it happens, though I think I will be SO sad 😭

It's hard to know what is a spoiler and what is not as Doctor Who has such a long history. Some would say that everything BEFORE this episode is fine to tell because it's already happened. I haven't seen classic Who, so I know nothing of Dalek's and Time Lords but if I had watched it, then I would know. I don't want to know what I'm not meant to know... so, episodes that haven't happened yet. I don't want to know what happens in episode X or season X because I'm not there 😅 It's hard to know what to do but I'm not willing to not read comments 😆

Awwwwww, Krista! You've made me so happy!! I adore that Christopher speaks so highly of his Rose... That has melted my heart. Those two have such a beautiful chemistry. I really can't see me loving any other doctor, and I'm genuinely worried! I just hope that I manage to deal with it okay 💜🥹
That makes a lot of sense about his dad being a driving force behind his emotions in that scene. It was one of the most powerful scenes I've ever witnessed. Just incredible!!
I am so sorry to hear of your wrist!! That would be SO painful. Sending you well wishes and a speedy recovery 🥰

“And what of the Time Lords?”
“They burned with you.”
The concept of ‘survivor’s guilt’ doesn’t do justice to the level of trauma the Doctor must feel.

I will say one thing - DW fans always go through several emotional states when a new Doctor comes along: sadness at losing the old, hope and/or anger at the new, grudging praise and/or criticism, and finally acceptance. And then it starts ALL OVER AGAIN.

It's like you went in thinking that you know what Doctor Who is all about and then this one delivered something else. You could be in for a few surprises with this show.
I'm not sure on your particular policy is on what constitutes spoilery things. Some things in the first two comments that I'd have refrained on venturing into myself. I respect we aren't all the same in this regard. Pointing out what and why would only add to it, so I won't go there.

Hi! I just joined your journey through Doctor Who, and I absolutely love how you have empathy towards everyone. (Fellow empath here 😁)
This episode... in the whole Doctor Who fandom and universe, Daleks are the scariest thing ever. And as you saw, they're like that to the Doctor too.
Here's a little fact about this episode:
Christopher Eccleston actually said that his father had been diagnosed with a really terrible illness, I can't remember if it was dementia or cancer, so he kind of poured his emotions to the scenes and his acting on this episode.
Yeah, Chris leaving so early was... it was heartbreaking for me and many others because he was my first Doctor and I absolutely adore him, as an person and as the Doctor.
He just doesn't hold back and tells things exactly as they are, he gives credits to where it's meant to go, and he's such a beautiful soul.
(I feel like almost everyone in Doctor Who is but still~)
I remember watching an interview that happened like a week ago, and he got asked a question about if he could travel with anyone else, he stopped the question and said, no. It's Rose. Rose in my Rose. And my heart just about melted at that.
And Billie, who was doing an interview later said that she would love to have Nine and Rose back, so I hope and pray that we'll get that someday.
BUT! Let me tell you, the next Doctors do an incredible job.
The next Doctor, I would have to say, would be my very very close second favorite after Chris.
It needs some time getting used to, but once you open your mind and heart to the others, they'll just win you over 🙏
I actually won't be able to comment much after this, I have a fractured wrist at the moment, but I'll comment again once I'm better 😇
Sending you much love and positive vibes from Finland~

One of my all time favorite episodes! Christopher Eccleston is outstanding in this - you really feel his anger and pain when confronted with the Dalek. When trapped in the room with it at first he goes from abject terror (not something you expect from the Doctor) to joy when seeing it is helpless, to bitter rage. When the Dalek later says that the Doctor “would make a good Dalek” you see the horror in the Doctor’s face at the thought that maybe his anger is not so far removed from the existential hate that is bred into his mortal enemy.
The story also makes you realize just how dangerous the Daleks are. If just one of them is a real threat to everyone on the planet, imagine what an army of them could do!
The Daleks first appeared way back in 1963 in the second serial used story of Doctor Who, and are credited in part with ensuring the show’s continuation. DW wasn’t at first meant to go for more than one season, but the popularity of that first Dalek story ensured its continuation.
By the way, the “robot” head in the glass cabinet at the start was another classic enemy of the Doctor, a Cyberman. Not really robots, Cybermen we’re once human, who augmented their bodies with mechanical cyborg parts, removing all emotions in the process. Their aim was to convert all other humans to a cyborg state.
