Doctor Who 1x05 World War Three | Full Reaction

So this is our second part and it's a GOODIE! I never know if the episodes are liked by people before I read the comments and maybe some aren't popular (there's a few Buffy ones that come to mind!) but I personally enjoyed every episode so far. I liked this one a lot.

A really nice ending, too, but I've given some more thought to the "10 seconds" thing that Rose was talking about. If someone could kindly explain it to me in easy-to-understand words, I'd be appreciative!

So, as I gather it, Rose thinks she will be back in "10 seconds". Okay, fine, let's say the doctor brings her back at EXACTLY the right time, then it really is 10 seconds. That's all good. If he gets the time wrong again, then clearly it is not "10 seconds"

BUT.... What I can't understand is... What happens to Rose's mum while Rose is gone? Time just doesn't STOP... Let's say Rose leaves for really 6 months, but gets back 10 seconds later. What does Rose's mum do in those 6 months or do they just not exist? I need help 🤯🤣

I appreciate your praise, but basically I'm turning it off and then on again. Not much tech know-how there. But thanks! 8-D

Look at you go!!! YAY 😄😄 Honestly, I don't like tech stuff... I get very annoyed with it, very quickly! I'm really impressed that you fixed it 🙌🏼

On the more tech side: I figured out my lag problem. Basically, after an episode, I have to shut down all my players and restart. Then the CD syncs up perfectly. Look at me and my big wrinkly old brain!

According to Douglas Adams, writer of HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, the main problem with time travel is grammar - for example, does one use the past tense to describe something one has traveled forward in time to observe?

Martin Holt

My favorite series starring Penelope was EVER DECREASING CIRCLES, also starring Richard Brier and Peter Egan. A lovely romantic comedy.

I think as we go along, I might be able to manage two per week! I could alternate things as well, so one week there could be 2 Buffy episodes, the next there could be 2 Who. I don't think I could edit more than 4 reactions per week as it just takes so long but alternating could be a good idea ☺️ I'm not very ahead yet as I've only just started watching, but if I manage to get a backlog, for sure!

This was great, glad you're enjoying the show. Many people cite this 2 parter as the worst of Series 1 and that the aliens are a bit goofy and silly and that the tone of the episodes is inconsistent, bouncing from seriousness to goofy light hearted fun moments. So if you enjoyed these 2 so much I think you'll love the rest. Only problem is waiting a week or more for the second half. Not sure if it's possible, but it'd be great if you could either release both halves on the same day or within 1-2 days for the 2 part episodes. Otherwise some episodes are going to be a killer to wait for :)

In other words, Daryl, what you are saying is that (at least in DW) Time is like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey…stuff? Or words to that effect. 😉

I guess it's difficult to imagine as we have no real world comparison that we can draw from. To a certain extent, as far as we are concerned, time is something that happens just in the here and now. What has happened is behind us and our memories is one of a few connections to them; and they can be unreliable and unique only to us. (The others being the written word and visual / audio recordings.) The future is always ahead and we never ever get there, because if we do it becomes the present. (I type, and realise, I might not be helping.) 🤣 We live in a world of three dimensions, height, length, width. Time is the forth dimension in the time space continuum. For the purposes of arranging our thoughts in relation to a world where time travel is a physical reality. Maybe try to precieve ALL of time happening all at once. Everything has already happened, to a certain extent. Nothing has happen, is happening, or will happen. It's all happening at the same time. Nothing potentially changes until someone exits the natural flow of time, travels through the theoretical time vortex (that you see the TARDIS travelling through), and re-enters at another point. They are removed from the natural flow of time, and reinserted at a different point. Because they do not belong there, their presence is an anomaly, so any interactions they have will effect changes to a well established series of events, at that point. These changes can be either minor, major or in some cases things that were always 'meant' to happen. (We will cross that bridge at a later time.) With in this narrative, time is like an extremely intricate structure that can weather lots of minor changes. As long as you don't disrupt any foundational elements that risk collapsing the whole of time.

Re the farting, people sometimes forget that DW is aimed at a very wide audience - from very young kids to oldies like myself. That’s why it goes from thoughtful social commentary and deep personal relationships through to cheesy child-like humour. Kids of a certain age like nothing better than a gods (and repeated) fart joke! In the same episode they talk of “massive weapons of destruction”, which is a clear reference to “weapons of mass distraction” used as the excuse for the invasion of Iraq by the US, UK and Aus in the early 2000s; and the Doctor has an existential crisis at the thought of losing Rose. Basically, there’s something for everyone in this show. 😀

I've seen a bit of dislike for the farting aliens in the comments on youtube 🤣 I really don't mind. It's a bit of fun, adding some light-hearted cheesy humour to the episode. Sometimes it can be nice just to have a laugh about silly things for a change! I love that you're now following along with Buffy as well!! That is SO good! I had heard of the show in my teen years but never watched it as the title sounded silly 🤣 I clearly don't have a good sense of judgement but I am so glad to have found it now, at an age where I might have more patience to experience it fully. We're in this journey together, now! Let's goooo 😸

This is the first time I've seen her but I love her passion! She's better than most the politicians I've seen 🤣

Juliette Gaming

Neil.... I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT. What if something bad happens to the Doctor and Rose is left all alone on the TARDIS for, say, 30 years until she works out how to operate it (unlikely, but hear me out haha). Then she does return to her mum and is older than her, like you mentioned? Whaaaat..... Nope, I refuse to think about it any more 😆🤣

Juliette Gaming

I really think it might be better off if I just DON'T think about the intricacies of time travel as it just makes me ask more questions and it hurts hahaha🤨

Juliette Gaming

I've been truly wracking my brain to understand but it honestly evades me 😭 Does Jackie simply cease to exist in the space when Rose is gone? Because when she walked away, surely she just lives her life for 6 months and then 10 seconds for Rose passes and she returns? Too hard basket 🤯

Juliette Gaming

By the way, Penelope Wilton, who plays Harriet Jones (MP for Flydale North), is another excellent guest star in the show. She has a string of great dramatic and comedic roles, including on Downton Abbey, Shaun of the Dead, Cry Freedom, and others. She fits in perfectly here, and is a joy to watch. Hurray for Harriet Jones ( future Prime Minister)! She has my vote as well.

Lloyd B

As others have said, it’s more that Rose could theoretically spend months visiting other worlds, but return 10 seconds after she left (just like she thought, after a few days, that she had returned 12 hours after first leaving, but in fact it was 12 months). I’m really glad you’re enjoying the show. This 2 parter isn’t the best story in the show by any means, and there are those who really dislike it because of the farting aliens. But you’ve clearly clicked with DW from the start, and it’s a joy to see! The show runner who revived Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies, grew up watching the original series, and has remained very true to the tone and spirit of the Classic series, with its at times campy humour, but also strong moral center. But he is also a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and consciously added elements of that show into the revived series, particularly in terms of character development and relationships. So it’s no wonder that you and other Buffy fans took to the show immediately. I had never seen BVS, until I started watching your reactions to DW, and am now following your journey with it as well, experiencing it in sync with you. I can see now what RTD meant. Very much looking forward to next week!!

Lloyd B

No, time doesn't just stop for Rose's mum but you have to remember that Rose is TIME travelling, not just travelling for six months as you or I would. For Rose's mum there would be only ten seconds between Rose leaving and returning. I'd be more concerned that, theoretically, Rose could travel with the Doctor for 10 more years which would mean that when she finally returns home, from her mum's perspective, Rose would have aged 10 years in 10 seconds and she will have missed out on a big part of her daughter's life. Or Rose could even travel with the Doctor for so long that when she finally returns home she could well be older than her mum is! (her mum would be only 10 seconds older than when they last saw each other, but rose could be 40, 50, or however many years older) I've probably just made it worse for you there Juliette! Sorry! 😆

Neil Hanson

There's not really a "one true opinion" on whether an epsiode is good or not. Of course there'll be some where a majority of viewers like an episode and dislike another one, but we're here to see whether _you_ like an episode. Sometimes we might be discussing, afterwards, why some of us might see it differently. It's all good. :) Also, with time travel: Sometimes it helps to try and view things from each viewpoint. Sometimes it doesn't. The lore of time travel in fiction is vast, and Doctor Who has its rules about it. You'll come to learn about it over the series.

Patrick Armbruster

Under the specific scenario you describe. Their perception of the passage of time would be different. Rose would be six months older and Jackie would be 10 seconds older in the moment they see each other again. Jackie would be living during the natural flow of time and Rose would be travelling back and forth along it. As far as Jackie would be concerned, little time has passed. But for Rose, she'd have lived 6 months of new experiences.
