Buffy - I, Robot... You, Jane S1 E8 - Full Reaction

Finally Willow gets a boyfriend and he turns out to be THIS guy.... At least it made Xander jealous a little? There's always a bright side 😅

Some good news is that I finally now have the Buffy episodes in the old style so expect that from episode 11 onwards! I'm just hoping I'll like them as I feel I have gotten used to the lovely widescreen version. Even if I don't like the older version, I'll stick with it as most people seem to prefer it that way 💜

Buffy - I, Robot... You, Jane S1 E8 - Full Reaction

Comments

There's still options, of course. From only doing edited versions to using the AI-upscaled one etc.

Surely I cannot be alone with those thoughts 😂 I have to begrudgingly give in though... If he wants to date that Calendar woman, then on his head be it 🤣

Oh, absolutely! I understand the difference between the versions and now I have the DVD version, I have the option to watch them in 4:3. The problem is that I've got the wrong dvd as it is too quick. I've googled this and apparently EVERY DVD version is wrong, so I'm beginning to think I just can't win with Buffy. It's beginning to get stressful and I don't want it to impact on my enjoyment of the show. My highest priority is to have a version here for you guys and as there have been no complaints so far about the wide-screen (apart from its trash haha) then I assume the speed is fine. I'm going to make a quick video today and post it here explaining my thoughts going forward. It's a shame but at least I can watch the DVDs on my own time. If I have the wrong DVD then it's just not going to work here for the reactions 😔😔

I just have to note: The "the HD remasters are trash" comments aren't just comments to be ignored, because that HD remastered version is trash on various levels that lets the viewer a) see the show as it was not intended to be viewed, b) important parts are sometimes cropped out while c) things are in view that shouldn't be there and d) the whole vibe of important scenes are changed. So switching to one of the 4:3 versions is definitely more than just important.

The possessiveness over Giles was great. :D Glad you came around to Miss Calendar by the end.

SweetSummit

Thank you, Neil. I might just have to do that as it does appear my DVD versions are too fast 😭😭😭

Juliette Gaming

She did 🤣🤣

If there is an issue with playback speed (essentially PAL Vs NTSC) you can always just continue watching the Disney versions. You'll probably continue getting the occasional "the HD remasters are trash" comments every once in a while, but they are easily ignored. Or there's always the AI upscales of the original 4:3 versions available to download via torrents (the best way to watch, but not essential if you're happy with what you currently have).

Damn, Willow got catfished! 😂

There are no perfect copies ... those have been lost to the ages of time. Only the original airings are, well, original, but while available, due to the quality of the time are not the best versions to watch.

Oh, man.... Thank you for explaining! That helps so much. I'm worried now that the DVDs won't be the right region or speed and will mess with the full reactions? I haven't had any complaints so far with the widescreen full reactions. If it doesn't work, then I don't know what to do going forward. I mean, what does everyone else watch Buffy on? I was watching it on Disney and now it will be the DVDs. Why are things never simple 😵

No need to feel bad. AR is aspect ratio. For us older hats 4:3 (what Buffy was framed for) evokes a different sort of feeling than 16:9 (what modern tv is filmed in) and way different from 1.85 (tends to be closer to 1.88:1). 4:3 has a bit of levity to it, 16:9 tends to be more serious, and 1.85:1 tends to be more “cinematic”. It’s a distinction I can’t put my finger on but it definitely evokes different emotion. In regards to Buffy the biggest issue is what region is watched and that it’s not hd. The issue with WS is that it wasn’t framed for it so you’ll see cameras and crew and the like. The issue with HD is it wasn’t color corrected ... don’t have any examples, off hand, that aren’t spoilers, but when it’s not spoilers you’ll be shocked. It’s a part of the problem with watchalongs and this show ... not only are there the AR issues but there are also issues with the speed of the episode (common at the time) where certain regions play faster by about 4% :.. may not seem like much but it’s enough to cause sync issues and pitch issues in the vocals.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, I'm sorry! I feel bad for not understanding what AR is, please forgive me!

Juliette Gaming

It’s a weird thing to understand as far as how the eps are displayed but during the Buffy time there wasn’t a lot of care put in to how the impending hd/ws conversion was going to effect a viewers experience. Suffice to say just about every reactor has commented on it in some way...it’s the dreaded reason that so many people are afraid to join Buffy reactions (it extends beyond the AR ...). Buffy really hasn’t been treated well in post airing content, unfortunately.
