is this specific to a region? never heard about it in the south

bloodflart

wow great start, mine was Monkey Shine

bloodflart

i hate when guys lose but it is effective

bloodflart

i must be a fuckin stoner cause i remember liking it, i should rewatch now that everyone has told me how to feel about it

bloodflart

Who randomly shoehorned a wrestling bout into their movie better, Kubrick or John Carpenter?

Haunted Screen

I didn’t frequent Landsdown Road but I used to go to Scruffy Duffy’s fairly often in the mid-late 2000s. The original Scruffy’s is closed now and while they’ve reopened at new locations the vibe I just not the same. When they closed, some of the staff moved on and opened their own place, Triona’s - one on Third and one on Sullivan. Both of the places have the vibe you described and the one on Sullivan has the original chef from Scruffy’s and their wings use the original recipe. I left Hells Kitchen a while ago and am in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill area, I’ve been to Zombie Hut and they still have games there.

D

Funny that Gabrus mentioned drinking at a bar in Hell’s Kitchen because I just discovered a documentary on YouTube called First Call. It is from 2001 and they go around to several bars in Hell’s Kitchen and interview the people who come in for a morning drink. It is just under an hour long, shot in black & white, and the characters in it are amazing.

Blasphemy

Michael Daniels

Room 237 is the result of a group of dudes passing a blunt and talking about their Shining theories and someone said "bro we should make a movie about this." It's fun discussion but as a creative enterprise, you can skip it.

Michael Daniels

Hudsucker Proxy is a NYE movie

Jason Lee

Also Grendel, say hi to your mom for me.

David McElroy

I agree Grendel. There are multiple times where I laughed out loud at the absurdity. It seems to support stangers take that reading into it too much is not the answer. It’s about the effect obsession has over these people and how they project their interests onto the movie. I liked it a lot and would suggest Shining fans watch it. Very confused about the scorn for it.

David McElroy

Also agree that Luke Kirby was good as Lenny Bruce.

Morgan

I mean, yeah, those people are lost and unwell and that is the take-away I have of that ‘documentary’ but it’s not like it is sold or presented as pursuing that angle: it’s very much “do you like Kubrick’s The Shining? Here’s a documentary where a bunch of people have takes on the symbolism and meaning in that film” either way, it’s a bad and annoying film.

Morgan

I always thought the Room 237 documentary was a fascinating portrait of mental illness and obsession. Like the people they interview are all so lost in unconvincing, self-flattering, conspiracy nonsense. It never occurred to me that someone might take them seriously.

Grendel

The IMDB commenter/“simple-minded parent” voice that Ben does as an occasional aside has taken over my life

Don Bell

That's the one! I worked in San Mateo for a few years right before it closed ~2007/8. They had $1 dogs and $1 beers on Mondays so sometimes we would hit it up after work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_Meadows_Racetrack I see now that it was "once the home of Seabiscuit" and that "The innovative William P. Kyne introduced pari-mutuel wagering, the popular daily double, the first all-enclosed starting gate, the totalizator board and the photo-finish camera at Bay Meadows." Seems like real estate developers were eyeing it for a long time before it was forced to close. I challenge you to find a $1 beer in the Bay Area now

Cromsicle

Oh we believe you, you're an ABZ fan. Comes with the turf

ageeogee

hell ya - action boyz doing golden age film noir. keep em coming.

Daniel

My father in law’s brother came back from Vietnam all messed up and spent the majority of his time thereafter at Bay Meadows blowing every spare dime he had on horse racing. After they shut it down, he had to cross the bay to Golden Gate Fields, which also shut down about 6 months ago. Weird subculture, but I’m sure he ran across quite a few interesting characters throughout the years.

Jim

@josh Yes! And he had great chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan. @mouse totally get it, that’s definitely happened to me with other actors haha

Jenn

Yeah he was fine as Bruce. He also plays a movie star trying to do Hamlet (like Keanu did) on S1 of Slings and Arrows -- he was fine in the personal scenes, but fittingly horrible during the Shakespeare and now my brain just assumes he's a bad actor.

eponymouse_ponymouse

Also the comments about trying to get your dad to play video games... Very vivid memory of my little brother and I trying to get my dad to play one of the Madden N64 games with us and him immediately giving up because the joystick motion was inverted from the way it is on airplanes.

another morgan

I’m gonna take a swing and say 200 Cigarettes is the NYE movie Ben is trying to think of.

Justin Robinson

Agree, that he was really good as Lenny Bruce and brought a ton of warmth to that show

Josh K

I recently watched all the Kubrick movies in order and listened to all the Blank Check episodes on them, something they learned through all that is something I've always thought about Kubrick is that he's very deliberate about setting up shots with lighting and staging but his tons of takes technique wasn't about control and doing it until it's how it is in his head like a Fincher or something. It's because he's waiting for something to surprise him and get something that maybe nobody thought of in the first takes. Some actors loved it and the actors who hated it were the type who needed to be told they are doing it right. Loved getting to rewatch the killing and loved listening to Stanger mix up Fear and Desire and Paths of Glory because they are both war movies and I do the exact same thing

Steven Nuchols

I really liked Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce, but I guess this is not the first time I’ve had a difference of opinion with one of the Boyz with respect to an Amy Sherman-Palladino show (my introduction to Rodgers was his somewhat infamous appearance as a guest on Gilmore Guys)

Jenn

Bay Meadows?

Nathan Rodriguez

Otto’s Shrunken Head is pretty fun too.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

My grandfather owned race horses (harness racing) in New England and I have vague memories of going to the track that used to be next to Foxboro (now Gillette) Stadium before it closed down when I was 4

Jenn

Not sure if it's ABZ material but Vince Edwards also stars in a solid hitman B-movie from around this time called Murder by Contract (1958), which Scorsese cites as an influence. Looks like it's still on Criterion.

another morgan

This Gun for Hire (1946) is Alan Ladd's debut and a tidy little anti-hero on the run flick with some fun side characters. Recommend.

eponymouse_ponymouse

That Sterling fellow would make a great Robocop.

Dan

Was going to say Cross of iron but that is James Coburn who I just realised is a different person

pube

thoughtful entertainment

Cromsicle

I just looked up the filming locations and realized I’VE BEEN TO THAT RACETRACK! San Mateo $1 dogs back in the day…

Cromsicle

The walking into the chess club scene blew my mind. I saw it and thought “why would I be able to read the name of the place from inside the door that doesn’t make sense HOLY SHIT ITS IN THE MIRROR this Kubrick guy is a genius”

Cole Trickle

Just finished watching the movie. I think it was amazing. Love a movie about a bunch of guys fucking up and losing.

Cole Trickle

I mean if black and white heist movies are on the table, Rififi would be great.

another morgan

Hell in the Pacific with Mifune

itsyourcousinstjean

Also my final rentals from Blockbuster before they shutdown was first time watches of both 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: Year We Made Contact

Darryl Bowen

Zombie hut is still a great bar.

Bluvbot

This Kubrick feller’s got a bright future ahead of him

David McElroy

Holy shit, I also bought Dark City as my first DVD, along with The Matrix.

Nathan Rodriguez

Pretty sure my first DVDs was Blade and Dark City

Darryl Bowen

Same with me last year

Darryl Bowen

Hawk Talk isn't a Ladyhawk podcast? How disappointing lol Don't feel to bad Gabrus, I'm in my mid 40s and didn't see this until early 2024 and Barry Lyndon in 2022.

Darryl Bowen

How many ABZ listeners have a close relative that would frequent the track? My great uncle Sol took me a few times. Tried to explain it to me. No idea how he ended up my adult that day. I was 8-10 yrs old.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

Idk what the Hoopla’s all ‘bout.

Paul

I am stuck with Hoopla which I have a gut sense is about 2/3 as good as Kanopy.

Mitch Kapa

OK whats on your Mt. Rushmore of cuck meltdown scenes? I'm assuming we have to have George Peatty, Little Bill from Boogie Nights,

dyscostic

+ Emperor of the North

Adam Ross

Yes! Do Point Blank and Prime Cut for Lee Marvinvember.

Data Janitor

I loved this ep and especially the distraction today thx ☺️

Kat soh

In Goodfellas when Spider gets shot in the foot, Tommy Says “Take him to Ben Casey, the little prick. Let him crawl there like he crawls for the fuckin' drinks.” It never occurred to me until now that he was referencing a tv show.

Nathan Rodriguez

Good ol Kanopy. 👍🏻 #LibraryBoyz

Paul

I had never heard of this movie until today. I’m fascinated by the idea of there being a “Chess and Checkers Society” where someone might pay to go hang out and play checkers. I just started the podcast, sorry if they touched on that and I’m being redundant.

Nathan Rodriguez

Venom (1981) slaps. Oliver Reed is great in it too.

Bluvbot

I always think of Forrest Gump for New Years movies, that shot of Lt Dan is perfect

bloodflart

Le Samourai please

eponymouse_ponymouse

Was listening to the dumbbells podcast yesterday and loved hearing Erin be so confused about Stangerbot 🤣 would love to hear Stangerbot’s workout routine and healthy lifestyle choices

Liz Thompson

Gabrus 😢

FiddlersGreenDay

I love to see movies this old covered, hot damn. I hope they eventually cover Point Blank with Lee Marvin. In a weird way I feel it's the ur-text for this entire genre of movies we love.

itsyourcousinstjean

Kubrick fans annoying? Please. We the Zombie Squadron annoy more people before 6am than most people annoy all day.

Dan

The words “never trust a fart” were meaningless until my thirties.

WigeyInTheStreetsMitchyInTheSheets

I was sick with the flu all week, and the same thing happened to me! Thank you, Gabrus, for speaking for all of us pantshitters.

Dan

It’s like if you made movies and someone listed the movies you made

Chuck smash

Fate! You're doing one of my favourite movies the day before my subscription runs out (I'll be back). Plus I just bought the Criterion blu ray of The Killing 3 days ago. Thanks!

S M A G

LA chicks aren't the only ones that think they're a witch and have powers and shit

bloodflart

Friend of mine was iffy on Raging Bull.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

I definitely have a harder time relating to them because the acting style of the time was more based on stage play...but they are still interesting even just as historical record, so saying "they are old and not good" is definitely a weird take.

Michael Daniels

i don't know if anyone will believe me, but i listened to Gabrus's story about an hour ago, paused the podcast to get some work done, and just sharted myself a lil bit for the first time in like 15 years. what the fuck, man Tiff's curse may still yield more victims yet... pray thee find some Pepto fellow listeners. godspeed

Robert Velasquez

I remember The first DVDs my family bought when I was younger were Face Off, Jack Frost, and Six days Seven Nights. Very random movies

PatrickKilbrogan

Laughing my ass off listening to the boyz talk about Elisha Cook, Jr.

Bluvbot

Tax-evasion era Sterling Hayden title for 2026: “Venom” (1981), with batshit crazy Klaus Kinski, smoke show Susan George. Criminals holding family for ransom with a Black Mamba on the loose

Adam Ross

Listening to Stanger crack up in the background while Gabrus recounts his pants shitting story made my morning.

Jim

Parents made me and my sister(4 years older) share a black and white TV for years. The TV was on my room. I was pounded into submission many times to watch Fame & The Saturday Night Gold Dancers.

Rusch Rosenberger

I know multiple people that dislike black and white movies. “They’re old and not good. “ What a weird take.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

This movie ruled!
