Dark Angel (1990)

The boyz discuss Dark Angel.
The term I’ve seen used for that thing Gambit wears on his head is a “head sock”, which feels appropriately stupid.

When Bill puts the costume in the cabinet (not a safe), he takes out a briefcase and puts it on top of the cabinet and slides the door shut but leaves the briefcase on top with the keys still hanging from the lock and we don’t see him lock it back up. I figured that Alice sees the briefcase and when she is putting it back in the cabinet she finds the costume bag and takes out the mask to ask Bill about it later.

Gotcha, I called it out because her having absolutely no reason to leave, the mask out was presented as a crucial piece of evidence to support your hypothesis. It would definitely have affected the way I viewed that part of the movie as well. That’s why I said to rewatch.

2024-12-31 02:07:25 +0000 UTC
No Stanger you're right I flipped those scenes in my head, he confesses right after. In my interpretation she's never seen the mask at all and has no idea what he's been doing, and that the mask was planted by the party people as a warning. My rewatch didn't really change my thinking even with the confession coming after. But hey it's Kubrick obviously he wants people having these kinds of conversations since he's not definitive on much. Next time I'll try to be clear and accurate. No promises about posting in the right movie though.

My response to your initial post was regarding this statement you made
“ Kidman wouldn't leave it there because she already knows about what happened that night since Cruise told her” It seemed to me like you were saying, he confessed to her at some point before he found the mask on his pillow. And then confesses again after he finds it? This was my critique - and maybe I’m not understanding you correctly. Is your rationale for her not leaving the mask on the pillow that Dr. Bill had already told her what happened and that conversation was not shown? I feel like it’s pretty clear that he broke down after he saw the mask on the pillow and said “I’ll tell you everything” and proceeds to confess his exploits. But maybe I’m wrong.

Hey, I appreciate you engaging with the content of my post as opposed to just dismissing it outright. It's way more fun that way. I see no issues with the cult accessing his house. He's being tailed for most of the movie and they're supposed to be the Illuminati so obviously they would have someone sneaky enough to be able to do break into a Manhattan apartment. I mean they know everything about him in less than 24 hours . They could just wait for Alice to go to sleep. Not difficult for the most powerful group of people in the world I'm sure. Maybe they drugged her. I'll say a cup of coffee is a lot different than the supposed smoking gun of infidelity the mask would represent in your scenario.. We don't know. What we do know is that the doctor placed the mask in his locked safe. Presumably to hide it from Alice. If she had access to the safe why would he ever put it there, and we never see her using it. It's not impossible at all for the Illuminati to have the codes to factory reset a safe like that, or a safe cracker. And to me, a climax where he comes home and sees the warning from the Illuminati that causes him to go through a psychological collapse when he realizes that his failed attempt at infidelity has endangered, his wife, his child, and the entirety of his existence, forcing him to confess to the only person he possibly can, his wife, who he has now endangered by his actions is much more interesting than I became a sobbing mess in front of my wife because I *failed* to cheat on her.

It seems important that the women could be his wife with a mask on and that she recounts exactly the experience if she were. She also seems like the far more competent spouse, bored and manipulating him (again if this is his imagination it still works- it’s a literal psychological movie, the text is explicitly Freudian ) complete control of himIt also requires her to jump from mask + tux to sex party. A jump we make because we’ve seen Eyes Wide Shut.
I don’t experience 99% of the internet yall describe. JIC we never meet again, you made me love movies again and my wife bullies me every time I get shit on for pretending like I know chemistry

If we only wanted ditto head fans, I could delete all this. I just want more people to watch the movies for themselves and to avoid YouTube videos made by anonymous people spouting increasingly outlandish claims to make themselves stand out. It's an offshoot of a larger problem where the internet has become an incentivized disinformation machine. To me, these theories are no different than saying Cobra Commander was at the sex party. Theres no proof he isn’t?!

:/ do yall really want ditto head fans? Everyone is so irony poisoned and desperate for sincerity but we can only assume the worst
Nah, it’s not clear if she is part of the cult or was brought/invited by the Hungarian- somehow knows what’s up. It’s not clear if this even matters, bc it’s his nightmare. The biggest mystery is that if she really is a demure housewife who lit an aggressive strain, a lot of what she does has to be a great coincidence. It’s important that we wonder if any of these women is his wife and that it could be his Madonna is a whore
The clue to this is when Nick plays a few stray notes of like a virgin. It’s because Madonna is there

I pour myself a cup of coffee and put it down on my desk. I don’t need to look at it and react to it to know it’s there.
So for your interpretation to work the sex party organizers quietly break in. They'd actually need to break in twice. The first time would be earlier in the day to steal the mask from Dr. Bill's hiding spot. They sneak back out. Later, Alice calls Bill to see how much longer he'll be, she stays up watching TV alone. Your theory is that the sex partiers break in again. Maybe they drug Alice, or they're so quiet they don't wake her up. They place the mask on the pillow she's spooning. Bill sees the mask, is so freaked out that, as you said, "they can reach out to him at any time" that he confesses to his wife - who, in your theory, would be clueless as to why he's having this breakdown. So according to your interpretation, the climax to this entire film about marriage, trust, monogamy, and sex- is just a guy being afraid about an undefined group of rich sex fiends coming after him.
This movie has ambiguity that increases the enjoyment of watching it. I don't think your theory is part of that. But I hope you find the pizza parlor draining kid's blood.

Kidman's character has nothing to do with the mask on the pillow at the end of the movie. It's left there by the cult as a reminder to Cruise that they can reach out to him any time they want and that his life is now a prison. Kidman wouldn't leave it there because she already knows about what happened that night since Cruise told her.

When the heroin (boy) talk was happening, and John arrived at "the mohel cuts the boy," it triggered the memory that the more fun, classic heroin slang, "smack," supposedly comes from the yiddish "schmeck." Schmeck means like a little taste or sniff of something, as in "give me a schmeck of that boy."
For the record, when I was into that stuff, in NYC in the late 90s, it was simply called dope, or D for short. Nothing fun like horse, smack, China white or boy. The only colorful part was the different branding stamps for the various suppliers... Blackstar and Kiss of Mint are the two I can remember off the dome.

I remember been impressed with a dissolving shot from the bad alien harvesting pheromones to coffee been brewed in a lab. It was proof that this movie was better made then it really needed to be. Old school pre-digital b-movies had a level of technical craft that is sorely missed today.
Also Craig R. Baxley is the man. Dark Angel/Action Jackson/ Stone Cold is a hell of an action movie run. In a better world, he would have had as much success as Chad Stahelski enjoys today. But he was awesome nonetheless.
Anyway Happy Christmas to all the Boyz and Janitors.

Matthias made a strong character choice that Bad Alien would make the exact same face every time he was retracting his heroin (boy) injector. Kind of an excited grimace. And if Jay Bilas was on Inside the NBA instead of ESPN this movie would be far more known. They'd be playing his clips all the time.

Y’all mentioned a car chase thru a casino and it reminded me that there’s a movie from 1982 called Fake-Out by the director Matt Cimber (he’s the guy that Marc Maron’s character on Glow was based on and he’s got pretty wild filmography/biography). Didn’t see Baxley in the credits though so no leads on that but Fake-Out might be a fun one for the show.
