Kindergarten Cop (1990)

Boyz have a penis and girls don’t really listen to this podcast. Not true, some do and we want them to know that we’d be honored to plant some of Dominic’s bullshit foil lasers around their homes. It’s Arnold’s most quoted movie this week. KINDERGARTEN COP
Hell yeah

Typically the better the movie is, the more straightforward and less entertaining the ABZ episode is, and this one followed that trend.

Astoria, Oregon didn’t suffer much from the wildfires of 2020 but did see some vegetation and trees get sun burn from being so hot during the heat wave in June. I was in Portland and it reached 116 degrees at the peak. I didn’t have ac in my kitchen area and cans of seltzer water exploded.
Astoria is a beautiful town to visit. Lots of trees, lots of views of the ocean, and many movie spots.

Astoria is a sleepy sailor town. About 10-12k residents. Tourist town in the summer, extremely dreary and rainy in the winter. Definitely worth taking a weekend in, especially if it's the Fisher Poet's festival. A gathering of salty and weird fishermen spinning yarns. I know a few people who made some good cash making films in Astoria (TMNT 3, Free Willy, etc). You guys were talking about cheap beach towns to check out, Astoria area is definitely one to go to. I have considered retiring or moving there often.

I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 and for the first couple years lived in West LA and I definitely ran into Richard Tyson in Santa Monica too. Q's seemed to be his spot but I'm pretty sure I saw him at Sonny's on 26th and Wilshire too. He's had his run ins with the law but man, he was definitely a real booze hound to the point where you could tell he had some serious addiction issues.
As an aside I remember being at Sonny's on Wilshire and me and some guys were at the bar and Jason Patric was at the bar and I was like "damn thats cool" and then in walks Robin Wright and she sits down with him and they are chatting and I was like "HOLY SHIT!" It was a real welcome to LA moment for me.

Pamela Reed is the best female character actor of the era. The Best of Times, Cadillac Man and Kindergarten Cop are fun weekend TV movies and she's great in all of them. And she did voice work on Ken Burns' Civil War documentary.

Met Richard Tyson at Qs in Santa Monica in 2009. Since I’m a huge fan of 3 O’Clock High we talked about that and the DP Barry Sonnefeld. The lead in 3 O’clock High Casey Siemaszko is in the Back to the Future trilogy as the 3D glasses wearing guy in Biff’s crew. Anywho Tyson was super super nice.

One of my most memorable theater going experiences as a kid, and not because of the actual movie. This was my family’s Christmas Day movie in 1990. We were about 30 minutes in when an usher came and asked my dad if he could come with him, leaving my brother, mom, and me alone. He was gone for a long ass time and showed back up when Dominic is trying to get the ferret at the end. My mom is all “where have you been?” And my dad says he will tell us after the movie. So we are leaving the theater and he tells us that two teenage girls had told the theater manager that my father was a man that they’d seen on America’s Most Wanted and so they called the cops and he had spent an hour talking to the police while they ran background checks on him. The plus side was we got something like 20 free movie passes as well as some popcorn and drink vouchers out of the whole thing because the theater was so apologetic.

Astoria is amazing, it still has the same coastal village vibe from Goonies and KC. Between this, Short Circuit and Goonies, it was becoming the place for PG-13 movies for awhile.
