Poking Around Pt 98

And here we are with the continuation for this month (there’ll be another one coming). Another emotive page since I’m drawing on direct personal experience here. And I’m not judging those who prefer to take it easy by watching high school shows; I just really don’t like them. Sorry.
And although not initially planned to have one, there is another fictional-dōjin cover along with the localised title. The actual translation is Don-GeroGero and the Chalice of Extreme Weight Gain (激太り/ げきぶとり gekibutori). ケロケロ gerogero is a frog croaking and it’s supposed to be this one (though initially it was inspired by this item.)
The rest of the TL notes are down below. And of course, thank you so very much for reading and supporting this story!
TL Notes
- Coming-of-Age Ceremony: Upon turning 20, one is fully recognised as an adult in Japanese society. There’s a ceremony held to commemorate this on 成人の日, Seijin no Hi or Coming-of-Age Day. In other words, Kuroki was 19 at that point.
- 高校時代/こうこうじだい kōkōjidai: Recollections of one’s high school days. Someone once told me that Japanese high school can be looked upon as the last era one really had the freedom to do as they will without suffering too many lifelong ramifications and/or bearing the shame/stigma of societal disapproval. Once one enters adulthood, the responsibilities greatly increase and mistakes made as an adult have costly consequences. It also proves as a popular (and profitable) point of time for Japanese media to zero in on since it’s that time one goes through the longest time of “coming into their own” as an individual. But I think that’s a pretty universal concept the world over, don’t you think?
- “12 Cute Guys”: Referring to this series; the reboot was continuing at the time of posting this.
- “AAAAWWWESOOOME”: The main character in this series screams a lot.
- “Feeling lucky?”: Referring to this where they talk… and talk… and talk…
- “Do nothing everyday”: Yep, that’s what 日常/にちじょう Nichjō means, everyday, ordinary. It’s also this.
- “Let’s go play ball, dude!”: This sports series literally called “Volleyball” (排球/はいきゅう haikyū) is popular with girls.
- “Host our Club”: This series, also popular with girls. The twins are these two.
- “Drama Club”: Referring to this one which was extremely popular in Japan. In short, two offspring of gangster families have to pretend to be in love with each other to keep things peaceful between the two factions. But in truth, the teenage protagonists can’t stand each other and escapades ensue as the male wants to make a move on another girl. Oh, and they have to star in Romeo and Juliet. Acting, drama, geddit? Anyway, the red hair accessory made me think of this rabbit creature.
- “Gurgle-gurgle”: A reference to this series and this octopus thingy. And funnily enough, the Manger Babies…
- “I am very smart”: A Reddit thread I stumbled across once. It’s also a convoluted reference to this.
- Xenophile: A person who has a love of foreign people and culture.
- That V.N. Game: “Escape the Sunflowers’ Fate and Go Scrape By”: V.N. stands for visual novel, and whilst lengthy, the title of said fictional game is a portmanteau of references: Morenatsu (a fan-made kemono visual novel -- I corrupted the ‘more’ part as moreru 漏れる which means something escaping, like a gas leak), the Fate franchise (which initially started out as a visual novel), and Higurashi (with this Kanji 蜩, it means cicadas, but when written like this その日暮らし sonohigurashi, it means barely making ends meet financially/living meagrely)
- NiaganaDELL: A portmanteau of this… space hornet/syringe? And this computer brand.
- It so is: A portmanteau of this brand and this entity – because sleeping.
- Personable Fashion/4ever: Spoofing entry number four in this game series.
