Darn these crowd scenes - but at least it's a sizeable offering, right? Fewer TL notes since this one's a lot more visual and plot-heavy-esque... and obvious hints are obvious. But the not so obvious ones are listed below. Thank you again for supporting this work.
TL Notes:
- “Council Says No”: Spoofing a catchphrase made famous by the early 2000s comedy, Little Britain.
- “Like that bear village in Hokkaido”: A reference to Kuma Miko: Girl Meets Bear くまみこ. One episode sees the protagonists’ economically deprived hometown produce a commercial to attract more visitors to it. Unfortunately, said anime ended in a big controversy.
- “Extracurricular activities”: A reference to this.
- “Dōhyō”: 土俵, a sumo arena.
- “Misquote ‘the Chinese’”: Originally, I was just going to quote the Simpsons but I found out that 危险的机会 (wéixiǎn de jīhuì, often shortened to 危机 weiji) does not mean both crisis and opportunity at all. Think of it like this. Just as how ‘catastrophe’ has absolutely nothing to do with ‘cats’ or ‘apostrophes’, Chinese words made up of compounds can take on entirely different meanings if those elements are split up. So it’s likely a mistranslation from Chinese into Japanese and from there, that mistranslation got popularised into English.
- “Blinkers”: These go on some horses to narrow their view so they don’t get spooked by passing cars coming from the corner of their eye. Don’t ask me how it works, it just does.
