The creator of Bryan Lee O'Malley has talked in a number of interviews about how the original comic he started when he was 24 and then ended the series when he was 31. That now in his 40s he had a different perspective of his 20's. Ramona was based off of Bryan Lee O'Malley's girlfriend who he later would marry. Unfortunately, the two of them got divorced in 2014. I think part of what drove this series might be O'Malley looking back at his past and how he could have done things differently.
