Halo S1E09 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! We've reached the end of season 1.  Will the Covenant find the Halo? Will Reach get glassed? Will Chief be the last Spartan standing? Will anyone use the Spartan Laser? But most importantly, will Kai survive?

This is a good final episode of a season that's been very up and down. We know they are already working on Season 2. The question is, will you watch it? You'll see where we land in the video. But we're really interested in hearing what y'all think of this show.

Thank you again for all your support, and joining us through another season of a show. Obi Wan starts next week and kicks off Midsommar-megheddon part 1. It's going to be a crazy summer, strap in, and grab some sun screen cause it's going to be hot, hot, hot!

Halo S1E09 Watch Along

Comments

Even it's just a complete sh!tshow, I hope you guys do watch alongs for Season 2.

Luis Machado

Going into this show as someone who has never played Halo, I thought this show was decent, but definitely agree the Madrigal plot line was unnecessary. If y’all end up doing the watch along for season 2 I will probably watch, but would be indifferent if you cut it out of the line up.

Lucas Allen

See I loved everything to do with the main plot (weird random sex scene aside) and I definitely will never complain about seeing Pablo Schreiber's ass. It's just painfully obvious that everything to do with Madrigal and the space pirates was total filler. It pertained to nothing. All we needed to see of Madrigal was maybe that first attack, just to establish how some people feel about the Spartans, etc.

Bethlee Swanson

This show was genuinely awful and a real nail in the coffin for Halo for me. I grew up with Halo, read the books played the games the lot, and this just... wasn't Halo, not at all, and it does the original story a disservice.

Nathan Clarke

I will be watching Season 2 for just one reason -- watching Kai's journey. I just love her. I hope they learn from this season's mistakes (too much time with Kwan and the ex-Spartan). Hopefully, you'll give it another chance because I really enjoyed sharing this show with you, especially since I am the only one in my home watching it.

Gail Ferguson

never played the game, but I really liked the show, yes the Madrigal story fellt completey out of touch with the rest of the show and should have been done better, for the rest, yes it was a very interesting and fun watch and your reaction made it better. please do season 2.

Jerome Engel

That’s actually very helpful feedback! Glad you’re here

Just FYI, just as you mentioned joining Patreon just to do the watch alongs with Halo, that was me in that demographic.

Bryan Wiley

Well at least creepy Craig is dead lol. And hopefully they’ll learn from their mistakes for season 2.

Joey (Hustlemando)

You aren’t hurting for content currently. Depending on when season 2 drops, you could wait a couple weeks for any reactions to see if it’s worth it.

Love watching your reaction to this show, and would love to watch you guys react to season 2. Some interesting things: * There's a new showrunner for season 2 (this was pre-determined and not as a result of fan reactions). Hopefully, with the feedback from the audience and new showrunner, we'll have a tighter story, since they clearly know how to do things correctly if they want. There was an interesting article from the current showrunner discussing some of the choices they made for season 1 (including the sex scene), it's worth a read: https://deadline.com/2022/05/halo-season-finale-recap-makee-dies-master-chief-season-2-1235022895/ * the madrigal stuff was super boring, but I think they're eventually going to tie into the fact that the halo monitors were originally human. "Chakas" is the ancient human that became Guilty Spark, so they might be doing some tie-in with Kwan's family. Also, there's potential that Madrigal is a Shield World. * Regarding the music, I 100% agree that it's like Star Wars without the music. Knowing why it has to be this way doesn't make it better either. They're only allowed to play/suggest the theme but they can't outright use the music because of the ongoing lawsuit. mentioned here: https://www.polygon.com/22929132/halo-composer-marty-odonnell-mile-salvatori-music-lawsuit-microsoft Overall this is a great halo-themed sci-fi show that I'm interested in continuing to watch, because like you guys, for some weird reason I want to see it succeed.

I really enjoy the show and I watch it alone. 🤷🏽‍♂️ not the game character. In the game he at was still himself.

Honestly, these final 2 episodes redeemed the show for me and were the best of the season. This is what I’ve been waiting for this whole season. Now that the buildup is done hopefully Season 2 is better and more consistent. This whole season it’s like the show didn’t know what it wanted to be. Hopefully it builds a better sense of identity is Season 2! Also Jay, I apologize but Halsey is not the best character. Her character is cliche and boring in my opinion. I just find her constant obsession of the artifact over everything else…..annoying. Like she wanted to LEAVE the ship to see what was going on while there was an ARMY outside? She lacks common sense.

Brad

I really liked the show and I hope you guys do watch season 2 for patreon, even if all you do is make fun of the ridiculous parts.

quirkygeekgirl

I personally loved the finale and the series as a whole. I'm able to separate the series from the books and the game. I love the games. I haven't read any of the books. I like how the series gave us a MC backstory for the show lore. I wish we had more episode so they could go into plot points more. I know there is big story with Kwan...but for the love of Christ connect it already. I have my ideas...they should have included an after credit scene about Kwan and the freaking monitor....you know the ones stay INSIDE the rings....where the flood is secured.

ManicMeeks

The only reason I kept watching this show was to watch it along with y'all. Totally agree it had its moments but there was lots of slog in between. If you decide to watch season 2. I will watch your videos for it.

Re: S2 -- During a lull between now and then (we probably have a year) I believe you guys should watch the whole thing again offstream. If doing so increases your enthusiasm & investment in it as a science fiction series happening within a Halo-inspired framework, I'd love for you to cover it. I say this because I totally, 100% respect not being super into it because of attachment to the games, wanting more fun, etc. but the specifics of several of your complaints are more to the "exhibiting incomplete contemplation" side than expressing preference. The cliffhanger isn't "Oh hey, it's the MC game character. Will John come back? Lol of course he will." The cliffhanger is: "Oh my God, we just witnessed the entirety of John's adult human life. What he experienced this season is all he will ever get. Ceding the reins means that person is now irrevocably gone, even though that person informs and will, of course, sometimes drive the dual consciousness he resides within now. But he'll never be a human man again. He's now truly a co-pilot of military equipment. How will what are he & Cortana are becoming work early next season, and how will it change as they (based on Halsey's observations of his brain scans) continue to integrate?" This is Doctor-esque, Gibson's Molly Millions, Jadzia Dax, Ghost in the Shell, sort of stuff. It just doesn't have the proper emotional weight if we don't think of it that way. Likewise, Madrigal + the Rubble were the BARE MINIMUM amount of non-UNSC content necessary to make the universe not feel like a game level with pixel-thin walls. Preferring certain storylines is normal. Refusing to recognize that a B storyline is fulfilling structural requirements and arguing it shouldn't be there at all is something else. This is easily my favorite genre show in years. In truth, it's something I've wanted since Space: Above & Beyond and didn't ever expect to get. I adore The Expanse, but The Expanse *should* be good. I thoroughly enjoy a bunch of Marvel shows. They also *should* be good. I loved Legend of Vox Machina, but it's a creator-owned show & was guaranteed to be good. Halo should have been a stupid disaster, yet somehow they managed to stack up a ridiculously excellent cast & do... emotionally sophisticated science fiction. What a delight, to be so surprised.

I thoroughly enjoyed this finale. I hope you guys do react to season 2z it feels like season 2 is going to be focused on the 4 Spartans becoming a real team.

HQB

I've been withholding judgement until the finale because so much of the initial pre-season negativity was complete BS, and because this show definitely showed it *could* deliver. And man, there were some awesome moments. But now I feel like my suspicions from earlier were pretty close - 1) The overall plot arcs and main characters are great, but there are too many threads. You just can't advance, resolve, or pay off so many threads satisfactorily in this format. They just need to button it up and streamline a bit. 2) They decided to HBO this thing - and I can see why. Some exec said let's take that Halo chocolate and wrap it around some GoT peanutbutter! The problem is that their top showrunners definitely know what they're doing, but the below-the-line drama writers... more CW than HBO, and that part ain't working. If they just stuck to the story and stopped trying to be over-the-top, this whole thing would be so much smoother and really live up to the potential that is clearly there. I'm still loving it overall, and I will definitely be tuning to season 2 to see where it's all headed. I think the problem isn't really money for the CGI/fights, it's money for the writing pool. They need to FIX IT, and this will be amazing. As for whether you guys should react to Season 2 - hey man, I honestly think you guys deliver quality content or I wouldn't be shoving my dollars on this Patreon :-) I would like it if you did, but if you're not having fun, it's not like I'm ditching if you don't react to season 2.

Droid Herder

Please do season2! I subbed to patron because of arcan a stayed for halo its been fun!

I am 100% behind watching Jay & Adam dunk on a show. Especially when it deserves it due to just being so disappointing. It's not disappointing because it's bad, it's disappointing because the show is phoning it in when it's shown it can do better. The sets and costumes are great, the CGI is great for a show level production, the actors are doing a great job (most of the time), and they know how to do a proper setup and payoff - but there's no payoff from the Madrigal "plot". It feels like a show being made by a checklist or routine, where they include "content" because some storyboard manual suggests including a sideplot or dramatic beat . But it's not based on that kind of property, it's a show about an elite special forces character stomping on aliens. Focus on Master Chief and his 3 Silver Team comrades. Make it a D&D game in the Halo Universe.

S Croft

As someone who loosely followed the halo games, I enjoyed the show. Cut out Madrigal and trim the show down to 7 episodes with a fight scene in every episode and this could’ve been something special. I’d love for you guys to do season 2 but if you don’t, I understand entirely

Luke Fisher

They need to drop Kwan and just concentrate on Silver Team. I will watch season 2 just to see if they learn from season 1. If it goes back to Kwan then I can't do it.

Rushara

I enjoyed (the non Madrigal part of) the show but I'm only watching along with you guys. I don't watch the episodes first and then watch along as I do with Marvel/SW. If you decided to not continue with Season 2 I understand, but I'd keep watching if you do too. I enjoy the gunfights and Miranda.

Jared Winn

Up until the 3rd episode, I started zoning out and losing track, and as Jay said at the beginning, I've been binging this with you guys too. If I wasn't on Patreon, I'd have checked out a while back. Thanks for the awesome content!
