Halo S1E08 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! The end draws nigh. For season one at least. This episode.....huh......this episode really makes some choices. Besides the....interesting moments, Halsey makes her play. And we'll be damned if she isn't one of the most complex and interesting...villains(?), antagonists(?), characters in recent memory. Also Kai is awesome and we love her, she is the best, and so help us if anything happens to her, we'll riot! We're very curious to see how season one wraps up, and who makes it to season 2, as well as where season 2 will take place.

The sex felt a BIT random, but I got why it happened. The fingernail...not so much. Is she even wearing a bandage after doing that? Anyway I'm living for Halsey and Kai, like Adam. I love John but he's not exactly FUN.

Oh man, I was ready put money on the reaction faces in the thumbnail being for that scene :D

Yeah, this episode definitely had some strong elements, but it's what I said in the comments for eps. 6 - there are a LOT of threads and arcs, and the writers are really drawing them out. Payoffs come super slowly, and people spend a week stewing about uncertainty. As a long-time Halo player, I actually think they nailed a lot of the Halo story in a way that the games were never able to. They obviously added a lot as well. But to me, it does feel like a halo story (not just a halo game extended cutscene, which appears to be what most people want). But last week, a friend and I were talking, and I think he nailed what's been raising my hackles a little bit - some of the writing is brilliant (see Halsey), but some seems (to quote him) like CW writing (as in the network). And yeah, the themes are awesome, most of the characters are great, a lot of the plot lines are also great, but the writing in some cases isn't flowing naturally - it's written for maximum drama, soapiness and shock value, so it obviously feels really forced in places. If they could tone that down a few levels, this show could certainly hit 10/10.

I am enjoying the show but I feel a lot of people like me have been playing the game for years have high expectations but if we lived in a world where we didn’t have the games and no knowledge of halo law this show would be 100% awesome

The intimacy makes sense to me from both their perspectives. They have the emotional experience of children but the knowledge of adults, and neither of them has experienced actual human connection basically ever. Chief has essentially been chemically castrated, hormonally and mentally controlled his entire life. Not only this but they have a deeper physiological connection than any two normal people would have. It's the entire experience of first attraction, crush, lust, curiosity, and that adolescent feeling of love at first sight. They both experienced the entirety of the late middle school and high school emotional ans sexual journey within the matter of moments as every part of their missing lives tries to catch up to their physical beings. All the things they may have witnessed or heard about but never felt blasting in all at once. The only thing that didn't make sense is the lack of absolute awkwardness that could have been played to lighten the scene a bit. I can understand that someone would find in unnecessary but by no means was it unearned or out of place within the narrative. John's whole emotional journey has been somewhat leading to this. Now it's just him and Cortana, another emotionally budding character, left to sort it out. They should have cut all the Madrigal stuff post episode 1 though, no offense to those actors. Kwan should have stayed with Soren on his asteroid and they should have been used for something else later. Maybe as a refuge after the destruction of Reach, and you can build those characters up later in season 2.

I am 100% okay with them being intimate. They have this extremely unique connection. Also, this is a TV show. Not the game.

Best episode of the season, by far. When I first watched it an the fingernail scene came up I immediatly heard "looks like I hate it" in my head haha

Coming at this as a sci fi fan, it's so wild to see people (definitely not just you guys) saying "too bloated" or "too slow" re: elements of a show 8 eps in. Thinking back on well-regarded SF shows of the past 30 years, only... I want to say BSG & X-Files? are considered to have hit any stride whatsoever in the first season. And, except for The Expanse, all those best-of-genre shows (B5, DS9, Farscape, etc.) had 20-24 ep seasons. IDK how a show really leaning into the genre weirdness of the story and using characterization to drive plot can move any faster. That's what I particularly liked about writers being very straightforward about Makee & John. Could they have an emotional bond some other way? Sure. What do two humans denied an emotional adolescence WANT to do after encountering someone like them? They want to bang. It's the only honest answer. Totally agree Kai & Halsey are awesome. I'm so glad I don't have any complicated attachments to the games so I can enjoy something I never thought I'd see again: A SF show so committed to its internal & emotional consistency that it truly doesn't seem to care if x or y or z part of the audience is actively unhappy part of the time.

There's only 9 episodes, not 10.

While I'm enjoying this series, I really hope the last two episodes end with a bang. The last time we really got any proper action was Episode 5, and don't get me wrong - I enjoy the development of the story so far, I always feel that the first season of a show is more for character building and setting the scene. I'd like to hope this is why it's been greenlit for a season 2 already - to hopefully dive straight in to the action. I had mixed feelings about this Episode, but really glad the Madrigal plotline is hopefully done and over with for now. Also, I'm with Adam - the Kai plotline, yes please. More of that. :)

I was just waitin for you guys to see that fingernail scene πŸ˜‚
