there's a YouTuber that reacted to this episode, and she "escaped" Scientology (her words) that you might enjoy watching...for the life of me I can't find the video though.

Oh yeah, you're right. After I watched this reaction I did more research on Scientology and that's exactly what happened to Chef's voice actor. I forgot to edit my comment. Thanks for the correction.

I pretty sure the voice of chef sin came out and said that the church of scientology quit for him and that he didn't have a choice since he was in the hospital

The funniest bit to me is when they dare Scientology to sue them at the end, dare them again, and it cuts to the credits and everyone is John Smith or Jane Smith.😂
Don't know if true, but apparently Tom Cruise did get pissed off at this episode, demanded it pulled or he wouldn't do press tour for his Mission Impossible movie at the time, Paramount and Comedy Central were owned together.
- Penn Jillette is friends with Matt and Trey, and Showtime wouldn't let him make an episode about Scientology in Bullshit! so Matt and Trey decided to do it, and Comedy Central had their back. This is back in the day when Scientology was pretty ridiculous in their lawsuits, threatening people, investigating members, journalists, etc, might still be the same now.
- Chef, (Isaac Hayes) was a Scientologist, and Trey and Matt told him about the episode, they make fun of everyone and everything, no one is spared. AFTER the episode airs, Isaac Hayes "quits" the show.
His son says Isaac did not quit the show himself, but people from Scientology controlling his publicity did it on his behalf. Reports MONTHS later say that at the time he had had a stroke and had been disabled. Most likely it was the pressure from the group itself, Isaac did want Comedy Central to pull the episode and did interviews after he was released from his contract, and Trey and Matt pointed out the hypocrisy of making fun of Muslims, Jews, Christians and everyone else but drawing the line at your own religion. But the timeline for them does not add up, and Matt and Trey believe the Scientology people were the bad influence.
- The controversy regarding the rebroadcast of the episode cannot be done justice with a few sentences here. Comedy Central pulled one rebraodcast, fans went nuts, boycotted Mission Impossible, pirated the episode and put it online for free everywhere. In other countries the stations feared getting sued, they didn't broadcast the episode. Others were not afraid. Tom Cruise denied getting the episode pulled. News shows, newspapers, reporters had a field day everywhere, it was called CLOSETGATE.
"The Return of Chef" deals with all that drama typical South Park style.

Ya’ll have to watch S8E6, called “The Jeffersons”. It’s about Michael Jackson. One of the funniest episodes in the series.

Highly recommend the documentary “Going Clear” by Alex Gibney. If you want even more after that watch “Scientology and the Aftermath”. It’s a wild “religion”.

The deep Scientology lore about Zenu and Alien souls was actually uncommon knowledge before this episode came out. Even most Scientologists didn't know about it because you have to get deep into the church before they tell you about it.

This episode is one of the biggest reasons why Scientology fell and is also the reason they forced chefs voice actor to quit after he got into an accident

According to Isaac Hayes' son, he was forced to quit the show by leadership within Scientology.

Everything in this is true about Scientology. This is what they actually believe. You need to watch the Mormon episode next.

This is a classic must-watch episode for all South Park fans. Yep, this was the episode that exposed Scientology. There are testimonies from ex-members saying this episode is what made them leave because they didn't know about the whole alien backstory. The voice actor for Chef was a Scientologist and he quit because he was offended by the making of this episode. The gag at the end about everyone suing Stan is a reference to the Church constantly suing/doxing people who talk bad about them. That's why in the credits, everyone is named John/Jane Doe.
The whole "Tom Cruise/John Travolta in the closet" gag was such a clever joke. All the allegations of them being gay plus being Scientology members while also referencing R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet created a perfect storm for a perfect episode.

Mine too but the joke is pointless if you don't know what they're referencing and they don't lol
