She blames me, and rightfully so. If I had set aside my pride, heeded my brother when the time called for me to be impartial, she and Catherine might well have enjoyed enduring, peaceful lives after the war.
My pursuit of righteousness has damned us all, and I've nothing to show for it. Sam fled the plantation years ago, leaving his family destitute and vulnerable to retaliation from the aggrieved relatives of those slain, and as it stands, I have no hope of tracking him down or bringing him to justice for his monstrous crimes. I shouldn't be alive. I cannot be caught still walking the earth and torn from Ellie a second time, not in the fragile state she is in. I owe it to her to replenish some semblance of hope. She has lost so much-her brother, her mother, the very will to live. It is difficult to fathom how she weathered such misfortune for so long.
It's hard to know how long we'll be sheltering here. It could be years, perhaps decades. I remain uncertain of the long-term conditions of our perplexing illness, only that it ostensibly has bought me time to right my wrongs, and with that time I'm sure Ellie will come around to speaking to me again. I imagine she has much to say. However scathing it may be, it will just be nice to hear her voice once more."

I’m not sure on that. I’m echoing some sentiment from a character of my own, from a longterm project of mine that I hope to make a reality one day. I don’t know that these types of flashes of insight are the right tone and tenor (hehe) for including in her work, which has its own message. I’d, of course, love to collaborate if she feels it would gel but I’m also perfect content to shitpost from the wings lol Though I do appreciate the compliment and the tacit association!
