Apple/Patreon: Bull Shit to Come
Added 2024-08-17 01:12:18 +0000 UTCIf you haven't heard, Apple is set to impose a 30% fee on all memberships purchased in Patreon's iOS app, with Patreon refusing to eat the cost or fight for us.
This will potentially all but destroy any momentum many of the small comic artists we've gotten to know over this year, and significantly hurt larger creators and their supporters as I imagine some will pass on the cost to Patreon members out of necessity. Apple effectively plans to steal revenue from small creators for no reason other than corporate greed.
As for me, if I don't think of a way to adapt to this, my growth during "The Velluto Duo" could potentially waver due to Apple's greedy policies.
Loopholes proposed: Patreon has offered a feature that will automatically charge a higher rate per tier to account for Apple's fee for those attempting to subscribe via the iOS app, (not a fan of this AT ALL.) However, I understand that on both Android and iPhone, you can sign up via the web browser version of Patreon to evade the fees. Please spread the word about the web option for potential new patrons of anyone rising currently. This has already been an extremely difficult year for content creators/artists due to "inflation," (something something record profits), and y'all having our backs on this nonsense would mean a lot.
Last detail, current patrons, Patreon tells me that regardless of what method you used to sign up, you will not be impacted by this change and the tier rate will remain the same for all creators you are subscribed to.
Thank you guys so much for being here. Fall will be a little dicey, but I refuse to raise my tier prices, and I have no plans to alter my style of content to attract inauthentic memberships. I'm here to make quality shit because I love it. And y'all are here because you want to help me make that quality shit and eat a big salad every day, and, again, I thank you. I love y'all deerly.
Fuck Apple.

I think Ko-fi is free of all this mess, if you're not already on there. I don't know what they offer beyond Patron, but they seem more focused on smaller-creator-friendly features and have a better fee structure, I think?
