I'm late to the party here, but I wanted to comment anyways. I recall when posted this last year on Reddit.
I am a caregiver to people who have Alzheimer's and Dementia, It has been my job for the past 12 years.
And the way you conveyed this really touched me, it's difficult first hand seeing the decline over the years. But despite the hard times the meaningfully connections where still there no doubt.
Some people don't express much due to the illness, but I can assure you they do and did appreciate your visits.

Ooooof. My mil had early onset dementia. It was rough. And that means my partner has a chance of developing it too. :(
