Janet’s Rock With U is better than Michael’s Rock With You

Drake Parker

There was a trans pride flag at the end of kendricks halftime show

JessCharles

Do you think Destiny by The Jacksons is a decent album? I’ve seen someone said it’s better than thriller on rym😅

Htkkk

Imagine dragons are the Nickleback of the 2010’s

The concept of music as an art form has never been more disturbing than on Scott Walker’s The Drift. While Bish Bosch was arguably more disjointed and weird, The Drift has a consistent sense of terror punctuated by musical jump scares and long moments of empty space which make the listener feel like there’s no escape (favorite album imo and just wanna hear your take on it)

Jack Harlor

Migos have done more for the genetic makeup of “trap” than Travis Scott has, particularly in how much emphasis they have laid on energetic adlibs

Drake Parker

In way shape or form are these two similar stylistically but I feel like Juice Wrld is experiencing the monotomy 2pac fans faced after his passing from the likes of Lil Zane,Ja rule and now that juice Wrld passed i've noticed alot of rappers trying to sound like him such as Joyner Lucas on some songs ,kid Laroi ect so would you say that in a way would you say Juice Wrld fans are experiencing what 2pac fans went through?

Daniel Spinato

Singers that can scream and screamers that can sing is such an overrated concept that people cannot stop wanking themselves to. I get that having range should be respected but being obsessed with a vocalist purely on the fact that they have range is so shallow to me. We should focus more on the fact that if this vocalist utilizes their range in a unique or substantive way instead of just praising them for being able to do a bunch of different styles in an equally uninspired/uninteresting way. Not everyone is Mike Patton or Serj Tankian and even THEIR fans get don’t know how to shut up about them sometimes. Looking at YOU, ALT METAL FANS‼️

I was watching your top 50 albums of the decade so far, and I noticed some very interesting things. First, I'd like to address the lack of St. Vincent – Daddy's Home—it was the only top 5 album of a particular year that was missing. (I love the album a lot, and I was kind of sad when I first noticed it.) Second, 2020 had 10 albums selected; 2021 had 10 albums as well; 2023 had 8 albums; and 2024 had 9 records. Honestly, as a viewer, I knew 2022 was going to be the most selected year for albums, but holy shit—13 LPs were chosen. Thirdly, since Charli's first AOTY, 5 out of the last 6 years have been won by women. Which is amazing, and honestly, it kind of refutes your haters with their sexist or misogynistic allegations. Fourthly, it seems that you are enjoying the 2020s more than the 2010s. Using the stats from your Loved list and the Top 200 albums of the 2010s, 2022 was the second year since 2010 (2018 was the first, which actually had the most placements on your Top 200 albums of the 2010s) to surpass 50 Loved albums. Since then, it seems that having over 50 has been more the rule than the exception. Which brings me to a beautiful point: music is not worse than it was 50 years ago, and the increasing number of albums you love is certainly a response to the growing volume of releases in the streaming era. I will always be happy to see some Latin American representation. I'm Mexican, so seeing Silvana Estrada on the list was amazing. And of course, Natalia—she is truly one of the best composers and songwriters of our generation across all music, not just in Mexico. It's just a testament to her greatness that, right now, she is the only artist with multiple top 10 albums in their corresponding years. Thank you, as always, for speaking out and not staying silent about some of the atrocities in the world, and, though not as important as that, for recommending great music.

Hot take: Foster the people ripped off Peter Bjorn and John big time and no one talks about it.

Alex Alcalde

It is always so amusing to me that the discourse for every Halftime Show almost immediately after it ends is arguments over whether or not it is the worst one yet. Like, seriously, it happened once again this year, it happened last year, fucking hell I heard some 'worst one yet' takes during the J. Lo & Shakira show! I feel that this is a result of numerous factors into play, (and no, not just the bigots) such as people having fond nostalgia for the MJ & Prince shows, as well as their own preference of who they want to see perform instead of who it is. In reality, I feel we should all just be grateful that we have this kind of level of halftime show instead of... whatever the fuck the NFL tried in the '80s and '90s. (like seriously, have you SEEN the 1990 show that Disney tried with NKOTB and referencing the Gulf War? horrific garbage)

While I agree that AM might not be the Arctic Monkeys' strongest album, it undeniably played a significant role in broadening their fanbase. It served as a gateway for many new listeners. And although Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino took a very different direction, with a production style that I personally found less polished, AM's impact on the band's popularity is undeniable. It was a good album for what it achieved, even if it doesn't represent their artistic peak.

I know it's a nitpick but I would like Kendrick's music a little more if he wasn't talking about his 'stuff" all the time - mind you, this isn't a gender thing, I just don't like it when artists start talking about their genitalia while they're singing. It's really off-putting to me lol

Machine Gun Philly

I don't think an artist owes us anything. If they want to mine the past for nostalgia, why not? There's a market for it. Plus as a musician I love playing my old stuff sometimes. And why not - it's my music. But also, Green Day and say, Pearl Jam have made new releases as recently as last year. Why not tour and market that material? I genuinely don't get this take. Just my two cents!

Machine Gun Philly

Red Hot Peppery Take: Despite my respect for them as musicians - and I admittedly even enjoy some of their music - RHCP are a negative influence on music culture. Their s*x offenses by nearly every member are egregious and they have displayed zero remorse or even changed their behaviors (see: every Anthony Kieids relationship since the late 80's) while still remaining HUGE and relevant. They lower the bar for being a legend in a way that grunge bands and pop acts like Beyoncé never have. I think we should decide against venerating them. It may be too late for the likes of Zeppelin or Lennon but we can and should take a stand here.

Machine Gun Philly

Have you ever been to a concert that was recorded to a live album? If so, did it capture the energy and magic of being in person at that performance?

Kyle Cahill

this isn't a hot take so much as a comment/question: Saetia is back releasing new tracks and touring. i'm going to see Orchid play two shows this weekend, one with Jeromes Dream. The Blood Brothers did a tour at the end of last year. Thursday are releasing new tracks, too. and now we have new bands like Venus Twins, and Jackal Twins... is the og late '90s screamo/post-hardcore/sass sound making a comeback? and if so, why now?

Daniel Segal

Concert Tickets are too expensive nowadays.

EZGames69

Bands that are going out on nostalgia tours are all washed up has-beens and should stop committing musical self necrophilia. From Oasis and Of Montreal to Weezer and Green Day. So many bands are trying to rake in money telling fans "oh look that thing we did that you used to like is now 20-50 years old... let's do it again!". Even when some members of King Crimson (a band I love dearly) decided to do this kind of tour for their 1980s material last year I had mixed feelings at best. And it's telling that their leader Robert Fripp declined the invite to join them on tour. A true artist has to keep evolving. Radiohead could have done a nostalgia tour, instead we have The Smile. There is so much amazing music being created right now, let's focus on that and not give these asshats our time, money, and attention.

Dustro 5000

For free especially the repeated refrain of this dick aint free is the number one reason i don’t consider myself a kendrick fan

Casey Carrington

...well darnit. I do that.

Herbieguy98

Yeat is very under appreciated and a lot of people take him as a joke even when he comes out with great, forward thinking and versatile projects such as 2093 or Afterlyfë, he is often dismissed very easily and not given the credit he deserves. I think the problem is that his core audience wants him to make more of the rage music sound they’re used to despite it being very polarizing to outsiders and they would rather hear him high out his mind instead of him trying something new and innovative. Yeat should make the type of music he wants to make instead of giving in to a demand that’s frankly mid and uninteresting.

It’s Not Melee

Agreed. Adding onto this point, I don't know why some people will kind of cheat the alphabetical order with artists and or titles that begin with the word 'the' in any medium. Like, for example, you'll see some databases refer to The Cure as 'CURE, THE'. Or for a movie example, referring to The Wild Robot as 'WILD ROBOT, THE'. ...I just don't get it. I get the word 'the' can be quite repetitive but, c'mon! Treat it like every other word, dammit!

ToadMan101

Hey Anthony. In sequel I did over a comment about British Comedy over a year ago that you revealed your love for. Would you ever consider reviewing Chris Morris’ Blue Jam for a future Classic Review? I know it’s an oddball choice for largely consisting of radio broadcast recordings and licensed material in the background of the sketches but seeing Rateyourmusic treat it as a serious album that is bolded and appears in the charts could make it a great left field choice if so desired and shows people what else can constitute for an album. You can also hear it’s influence on artists like Mclusky and especially Squid.

Nick

People not understanding Kendrick's half time show is a skill issue. Besides, a Metallica halftime show would be boring and lame anyways

tyler notyours

I mean this with all the love and compassion in my heart/soul. There has never been a time in the 43 yrs I’ve been alive when I read/watched a music critic review and thought, “I wonder how much they can squat?”

ripplingSun

is the rap album of the year already a two horse race between Kendrick and Tyler or can you see anyone else potentially pushing for the win?

Jude Clarke

Post-Britpop bands like Feeder, Travis, Keane, Stereophonics and Doves is just Britains answer to Butt Rock. To further prove my claim, Coldplay is to the UK what Nickelback is to North America.

I, II, II, IL

Would you say you're generally harsher towards newer music than older music? For example, you said it was difficult to narrow down your "These Albums are 10s" videos to 5 albums, but during the entire 2010s decade you only gave 5 10s.

Isabelle

Cal must be the best roommate of all time. Aren't you two in the same living space for like 15ish years straight now and literally throughout your entire marriage?

Waffles!

I was getting familiar with Big Science by Laurie Anderson, and I listened to it 5 times, fell in love, and went to go buy it on vinyl only to find that the final track on Spotify is some B-side that was never apart of the original album. And it sucks cuz I felt like it was a perfect closer!! I’ve noticed this with other albums as well. How do you feel about Spotify being able to just… permanently change the track listing of a classic album?

Say it three times fast (shoutout to my dad): Which wrist watches are Swiss wrist watches?

Who is Aphex's Twin?

I find it fascinating how despite continuing to be one of the biggest stars in the world, Ariana Grande is slowly becoming a non-factor in the music world. Almost a year later there’s basically no hype or discourse behind her last album and she didn’t even attend the Grammys. Seems like she’s pulling away to focus on other things and maybe that’s for the best, I don’t know how anyone could maintain such a high profile music career after so much horrible shit has happened to you in the public eye (especially Manchester which most people seem to have forgotten about at this point).

serpentwitharms

Do you think Death Grips’ radio silence and apparent lack of new music after their tour is a response to their fanbase? Given how weird and gross their fans have acted somewhat recently at the tours, could it be that their passion for making music diminishes when they feel overly analyzed, idolized, or misinterpreted, or just plain resent their own fans. Or do you think their absence is unrelated to that dynamic? Not trying to get parasocial I ofc don’t know them just thought it was interesting

Cameron Edwards

Organizing physical media by first name is always going to make more sense than organizing it by last name. It's the first thing you see so it's going to make things much easier to find, and it takes out the tediousness of having to switch back and forth between a bands title and a solo artists' last name (not to mention the confusion of when a band is named after one of the members). I will never understand what the appeal of last-name organizing is.

Herbieguy98

A take you can bring home to mom: “Butt rock” should be abolished as a term. There isn’t “butt-rap,” or “butt-pop” so why do we differentiate commercially crass rock from other, better rock? Why are Kendrick Lamar and Ja Rule both basically under the same umbrella when bands like Nirvana and Seether aren’t?

Machine Gun Philly

Hey Anthony, I don't think ive heard you talk about Type O Negative. Are you a fan? Are Bloody Kisses and October Rust classics? (This is solely regarding the music, Peter Steele's politics/edgelord attitude are another conversation.)

Aidan Mcilhenney

Post rock bands are doomed to fail Looking at the trajectory of legendary bands in the genre like BC,NR, Slint, Sprain, Mogwai, Talk Talk, Sigur Ros, and others, they either lost band members, split up entirely, or are more known for other genres (talk talk’s new wave). While there are exceptions to the rule (Godspeed and swans in the 2010s) even those bands had a multi year hiatus All of these bands are amazing but the moment they went post rock is when things started going downhill financially and internally for these bands

Kyle Cahill

Is rock back?
