“Congratulations,” a large suit wearing mutant with massive horns and cloven hooves said. “Not just anyone gets to meet with Mama.” She snickered to herself in front of a large warehouse door. “Now’s your last chance to turn back. You in? Or you out?”
A smaller mutant, with three legs and three breasts stood in front of the door, dressed in a similar formal black suit. “I’m in. You know that.”
The larger mutant scoffed. “Lotta girls get cold feet when they get this far. You go past those doors, you’re in forever. You turn around now, no harm no foul. Last chance to live a normal life.”
“I said, I’m in…” the smaller mutant said with a growl in her voice. “Now are you gonna let me past or am I gonna have to bust heads until no one’s left to stand in my way.”
“Spunky little thing,” the bull horned mutant said. “You can pass. Just doin my job. Enjoy your life kid.”
“I will,” said the tripod, adjusting her suit and walking through the doors.
The room was dark. Very dark. She couldn’t see a thing.
“Hello?” she said.
No answer. The large warehouse doors slowly creaked shut behind her.
“Hey, enjoy with the theatrics…” the tripod said. “I was promised a chance to meet Mama.”
From all around her, a chorus of voices spoke at once, both soft and alluring, yet deep, primordial, and intimidating. “And meet her you shall.”
The lights of the room started to come up revealing deep red curtains draped over the warehouse walls. A larger red curtain extended in front of the tripod, slowly opening to reveal a mutant in a huge crimson dress that flowed out from behind her. She had a long tentacle like neck which led up to a head and a pair of breasts. Most notably, however, right underneath this head appeared to be the leaves of a deep red rose. It was almost like the rose was blooming and the head was coming out of it. Atop the head was a hat with a veil masking the face and atop that very hat were more roses, of the normal kind.
“Is… is that you, Mama?” the Tripod said.
“It is I,” the large imposing long-necked mutant said softly. “You have done well to get here. Only the most loyal members of the family make it this far. Only people I can trust. And now… I won’t have to trust you anymore.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” the tripod said, trying to swallow her fear.
“It means you have been trusted with the greatest secret of our little family. You get to lay eyes on me.”
“No offense Mama,” the tripod said with some attitude, “But the rest of the family built you up to be something… I don’t know… spectacular. I’ve seen long necked mutants before. What, ya got some elastic mutation or something?”
Mama laughed. “This is what I love about mutants like you. You have no fear, or at least you are good at hiding it. Everyone else is too afraid to even speak to me but people like you, oh no, people like you would spit in the face of god if it gave you a dollar. I find that endearing. I find that useful.”
The word “useful” seemed to echo off the walls a thousand times back into the tripod’s ears. It made her tremble, almost like something was worming itself into her brain and telling her that it was bigger, much much bigger than she could ever be.
“Well, I guess I’ll take the compliment. So… what do we do now? Do I kneel? Kiss your ring? Do the whole Godfather routine?” the Tripod said.
“Oh no. No there is a bigger test of your loyalty in store.” Mama said, her long neck snaking over to look the tripod up and down. She waved her hand and a spotlight from the warehouse roof shined on a small table with a gun on it. “I want you to pick up that gun and shoot me.”
“Come again?” the tripod said, confused.
“Pick up the gun,” Mama said in a soft voice, shaking her head over to the tripod’s ear, “and kill me.”
“What sort of fucked up test is this?” the tripod said. “If I put a bullet in you the whole family will have my head.”
Mama laughed. “Oh no, no my dear. Trust me. This is what I want. Now can you follow orders or not?”
“I… but I can’t…” the tripod stammered.
“This is the last time I’ll ask!” Mama said, her voice reverberating throughout the room. She picked up the gun and shoved it in the tripod’s hands. “Either kill me or walk out that door and tell the rest of the family how you disobeyed Mama’s direct order!”
“I…”
“You have three seconds! Three… Two…”
BANG! The gun went off and the tripod, out of sheer nervousness placed a bullet right into Mama’s chest. Red blood spilled out of her body all over her dress. It slumped down and fell to the floor, along with its long tentacle neck and head.
“Oh god. What have I done? The family’s gonna kill me. The family’s gonna-“
A small chuckle began to rise from the body. The head was still moving. The chuckle god louder. The walls seemed to be chuckling with it. It got louder and louder until it was all the tripod could hear.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WONDERFUL! SO WONDERFUL!” Mama’s head said as if it was high off adrenaline. “Willing to kill anyone, even your own mother if she tells you to. That’s EXACTLY the kind of loyalty I need!”
Mother’s head started twitching as did her neck. With a slurp, the neck pulled out of the body that the tripod shot, leaving it’s shoulders and slithering up onto the walls like a snake. She was now just a long fleshy tube of a body, with a flower, breasts, and veiled head. It was still laughing.
The tone had taken a sharp turn toward the horrific. The tripod dropped the gun. “W-what’s going on here?” she said.
A tentacle extended from one of the curtains on the wall, wrapping around the gun and holding it aloft. “You wanted to see Mama right?” Mama’s head said. “Well now you truly can!”
The curtains began to rise and the tripod stepped back in awe and terror, her face turning white. All along the walls were vines of flesh, growing like plant vines, a million long necks entwined together. Growing out of them, several flowers with breasts and heads just like Mama’s. They were all laughing. They were all… her.
“This… this is your mutation?” the tripod asked in fear.
“Oh honey… this is just a portion of my mutation. You see I am everywhere. Every one of these heads is me. But this is not the only place I have taken root. Every other warehouse we own. Every mansion. Every production facility. Everything the mutant mafia touches I am there. From the shores of Port Solei to the streets of New York, the cold lands of Russia, the bright lights of Japan, anywhere you can find the family you can find me, Mama, the mother of all.”
“Oh…. oh shit,” the tripod said, visibly trembling now.
“Now you know the big secret. That body was just a loner. Even all this flesh is just temporary. Set me on fire. Sever all my necks. As I said, this is just one building I have taken root in. You cannot kill me in a way that is meaningful. No one can.”
“W-why are you telling me this?” the tripod said, her rough voice turning to a whimper.
“Because, as I said before, I do not need to trust you anymore.”
The tripod suddenly felt a stabbing sensation in her backside. A tentacle from the wall had stabbed into her flesh, and had already started to merge with it. It wriggled inside her, and dragged one of Mama’s heads along with it. Slowly the flesh sank beneath her skin. The petals, the breasts, until all that was left was a rose marking on the skin which looked just like a tattoo. Like the same tattoo so many members of the Mutant Mafia had.
“I don’t have to trust you anymore because Mama sees all. Mama knows all. Mama can feel how terrified you are child. Don’t worry. This is how the family operates. I see what you see. I feel what you feel. I know what you know. You cannot possibly betray the family, because even thinking about it will let me ring your little neck from the inside. Who knows? Maybe I’ll take your body next.”
The tripod shivered and heard Mama’s heads laugh again, but this time from the inside of her head.
“Oh but don’t worry my dear,” Mama said. “I’m far too busy to control you on a day to day basis. Just consider me a passenger. You keep doing a good job and I’ll be here… always watching.”
The lights suddenly went out again as the curtains fell. Suddenly, the tripod found her body outside the doors again, talking to the bull horned woman. She didn’t remember walking there. Did Mama make her walk there? Did she turn off her memory to make her forget.
“How ya feelin?” said the bull horned mutant.
The tripod took a few deep breaths to calm herself and then adjusted her suit. “I… I’m fine.”
“You look shook,” said the horned mutant.
“I SAID I’M FINE!” barked back the tripod.
“Woah woah, OK OK. Wouldn’t want to upset our newest Capo,” the bull mutant smirked. “Well, there’s a car waiting outside for you. Whenever you’re ready… oh and remember,” the bull pulled up her sleeved to show a rose tattoo on her forearm, “Once you’re in, you’re in for life.”
“Once you’re in, you’re in for life…” the tripod whispered.
