Update #118 The Heap of Hedonism

Hey there, nice man. Geddit? Cuz it's a lil' bit like hedonism? No? That bad, huh? No, no. There's no need to show me the way out, I can find it just fine myself, thank you very much.

Didn't entirely finish scene 9, but I should get it done tomorrow. And here I was hoping I'd have gotten partway through scene 10 already. Well, the part of scene 10 before it gets spicy is rather short, so that'll be quickly done anyway.

Here's a Bob for you.

You remember Bob, right? Yeah, who could forgot a gorgeous man with a face like that.

Saw some people playing No, I'm Not a Human on Twitch the other day and had a weird idea. What if, instead of aliens or whatever they are in that game, they're futas. Wait, I never explained what that game is, did I?

Uh, so basically it's a horror VN where you choose which people to let into your home, and try to figure out who among them are murderous aliens. Or something like that, I'm a bit fuzzy on the background of it all. So, yeah, instead of murderous aliens, you'd have to figure out who's a horny futa out to seduce your girlfriend.

The positives for a game like that would be, actual gameplay, replayability, and a potential for lots of different endings (No, I'm Not a Human has five in-game days per loop, I believe, so it's rather short). Could be made to be very engaging from at gameplay and collectionist perspective.

The negative would be that it's a lot harder to get someone emotionally invested in the characters. If you wanted to make up for that, every single loop of the game would probably have to be longer, with more dialogue and interactions along the way, thus negating some of the positives. Also, the longer you make it, the more complex it grows, and the more difficult and time-consuming the development would be. A tough balancing act.

Well, it's just a vague idea I'm throwing into my pile of ideas, which I am just now naming The Heap of Hedonism. Boom, put that in the title!

An elf in the hand is worth three on the bench.

Speaking of hedonism, next week we'll start working on scene 10! Which I believe I described as filthy last week. We'll see exactly how that scene goes, it might turn out to be a very long one, or I might cut it a bit shorter and just imply that it goes on for even longer. Not sure, we'll see what I feel like when I make it.

You may have noticed at this point that I tend towards making scenes that feel new and fresh, rather than doing the same thing in a slightly different way/location. A bit of it is just me wanting to do stuff that feels fun and engaging to make, scenes that I actually look forward to making myself. And another bit of it is that I think it's more interesting from a storytelling perspective.

Putting a lot of emphasis on a character's first time casting a spell, or their first battle to life and death, or their very first kiss, and so on. Those are storytelling staples, because they have more emotional impact. It's not very interesting putting the same emphasis on the thirtieth time two character's kiss, because they're both used to it at that point, it's simply not as exciting.

It's one of those things where one might say that real life and stories differ. In real life we experience every single event, a story can't showcase everything lest it grows to behemoth size, so one has to choose the most important parts.

Now, I make no claim as to my own ability at managing this perfectly or anything. I'm just happy as long as I'm trying and learning and getting better at it.

A wild Ruru appears!

Well, I'm off to stay awake extra long in a probably feeble attempt to fix my sleep schedule. I like being awake at night, but I'm for sure better at getting things done when I work during daylight hours. And we're once again getting closer to the part of the year where those are scarce up here.

Anyway, that's all I have for you today.

Thank you very much for your support, and I wish you a tasteful bite of hedonism this week!

Update #118 The Heap of Hedonism

Haven't played Cabin by the lake, sounds interesting! Although the previews have tits of concerning sizes. On the other hands it has absolutely glowing reviews. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Well, now I'm interested so I'll probably try it at some point. Anyway, that's for sure a good idea on how to balance the gameplay with character development. Not sure what I'll actually make in the future, there's quite a few things lying in The Heap. Most likely it'll be some Frankenstenian amalgamation of ideas. You're completely right that there's a compelling story element in repetition. Especially, as you say, when the repetition has meaning and show some sort of development. Something along the lines of a very hesitant first kiss where the character is more embarrassed than anything, and then later you show how they've developed more confidence by them taking charge and initiating a passionate kiss.

Sir Gary Bummer

Two thoughts I'll throw out there. One is the game Cabin by the lake. It is a weekend timeloop story. There is simply way to much to do so you focus and explore over multiple runs developing more and more insight into the characters even as you change then by unlocking the lore behind them. Your timeloop futa game could be similar to that as it does really build the characters well. Yours would be quite different in the end though if I understand the mechanical concept. Would still love it. Rogue-lite timeloop narratives are a real favorite of mine. The other is the idea in story telling where the emphasis shifts. I don't rightly know how to describe it but as the kissing example goes. The first kiss is about it happening. The fifthteenth kiss is about how it is going. It's a subtle shift in perspective that is really enjoyable to me. Seeing the same parallel scenes with different messages conveyed through them. Understand why people don't do it though.

Demoet

It's always fun to find piece of internet history that you've missed out on. And now I'll probably not be able to hear the word without seeing an old horny man twerking and humping at me either.

Sir Gary Bummer

Also, whenever someone says "hedonism", I think of Hedonism II, and then I think of Hedo Rick. Don't know who that is? Look him up on YouTube.
