Well met. I'm not one for new years resolutions but a decent starting point would be to touch base about my absence from uploading and updating. If you're just here regarding the former: Next upload will be out between late January and Early Febuary (eg. in the next 5 weeks). It's gonna be an extensive but standard production FUNKe Study on Deadlock, a bit under half an hour long with a fair amount of animation and editing throughout. (it's also about some other broader gaming concepts but i'll save that for the video release). If you're wondering why it will be that and not something "larger" to account for the time since last upload, please continue reading.
Over the last year, my dog passed away, then my grandmother passed away, and then my mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It has been emotionally taxing and I won't lie, for a lot of that time I wasn't getting much of anything done. Most recently i'm doing alright overall. My mom is in treatment and there have not been any complications yet. I have been spending much more time over the last year with family (and friends), because I have been processing a lot of reminders of the impermanence of those things. I don't mean to use any of these things as an excuse for my own productivity- My failures to communicate with patreon and discord are my own, but you do at least deserve to understand the underlining cause of that personal failing.
Returning to work: Initially the video break was because I wanted to make one BIG video following my last upload, where I specifically finish every sequel in the series I started (quake, doom, half life, metroid prime). So I needed to play a lot of different games, compile a lot of different thoughts and then edit/animate that all into one larger upload. However life events have made me rethink my approach a bit because it is very tough trying to see the finish line when you take on that much work all at once. So right now I plan to break that one bucket list part 2 video up into individual videos for each series, or at least for various sections of the video, so that I can put them out as parts over time instead of having one two hour or longer video come out 6 months from now.
In the mean time, my NEXT upload is going to be about deadlock because, in all honesty, i've put a lot of hours into that game as a break from reality and at this point i'm too opinionated on it to not talk at length. If that doesn't interest you then it may help to understand that while the video is trivially about deadlock, it is functionally about how communication features work in multiplayer games (voicechat, pinging) among other broad concepts. It's not a video about deadlock mechanics nearly as much as it is the "experience" of trying to adapt to a server full of random people and how that defines MOBA games as a whole. If that still doesn't interest you, then hopefully the next-next upload another month down the line is to your interest.
This blog post has no punchline. Thanks for your time. I'll see you near the end of the month, and not long afterwards with more behind-the-scenes stuff.
