Is it true that Australia used to be a place where America just sent all the criminals or is that just a stupid thing Canadians believe

It was the British, not the United States that sent criminals there, as many have already said here. The connection to the US was indirect. They were sending criminals to some of the colonies which formed the US after the revolution, but once we gained independence, the British had to find a new place to put them, so they settled on Australia.
