Horses can definitely be competitive. There was a horse where the rider wanted to slow down and take it easy (because he felt something was off with the horse) but instead the horse sped up too much and ended up tripping. Actually part of a famous, but sad story...

George as a farm boy, you are totally wrong about how competitive horses can be. Running is a way to establish dominance. Goldship in one race ran on a difficult part of the track that the other horses were avoiding in order to win. My sister had an old mare she named Blaze. Normally she only went at a slow walk, but if you turned her in the direction of the barn, she would just start running to go back to her stable, regardless of what you did with the reigns.

Symboli rudolf the real horse. The jockey that rode the horse said the horse taught him how to race the horse by itself waited and sped up on its own and won the race. I forgot exactly what happened but horses are really smart.

El condor was not allowed to race in the classic races because it was a foreign horse that rule is gone by 1999 a year after el condor 1998 could have ran. That is why the show put el condor in the derby with special week since the horse was not allowed to race. This is the only major change in a real race for the show.
