Hopepunk City Beta 0.8 Available

I've done enough tinkering, I need to stop!  Time to finally release a beta!

A lot has changed since the alpha version back in July.  I was supposed to finish the story, release a 3 month alpha, then work on audio and achievements, and release a beta.  Well I did things out of order and now there is a beta, complete with audio and achievements ready to go!

Is there stuff still to work on?  Yes. I think I quashed all the bugs, feel free to tell me otherwise. (I'm sure there are bugs I haven't found yet), but there are some graphics I am not satisfied with yet that need to be redone, a scene I need to add for completeness sake and a few balancing things I want to play with, but none of that keeps the beta from being enjoyed.

You can access it here PC, Mac, and Android available:  https://arianeb.itch.io/hopepunk-city/patreon-access

You will need a free itch.io account if you do not have one, and your patreon login if you haven't linked the two yet.  Tell me if this doesn't work, this is the first time I am distributing an unpublished beta this way, and I cannot test to see if it works or not.

I attempted to create a "patch" to the alpha released in july, but the differences are too big, the patch was 300MB, and the game is only 400MB, so just download the whole game again.  Save files made with the july alpha should work, but may not count towards achievements.

Notes:

*  I'm sure some of you will find portions of the text a little weird.  I made most of the game gender neutral.  Every character uses they / them pronouns.  Most of the game you will not even notice this, but from time to time it will read a little odd.  If you see a "your" instead of a "you're" or a glaring misspelling, point it out, but if I use a "they" instead of a "she", or a "their" instead of a "her", it was intentional.

* Some settings in preferences to be aware of:  There is an "easy (censored)" mode designed to make the game playable on you tube and twitch, or at work.  If you see black bars where nudity should be, you might have this turned on.  The status section of the screen has three settings "show", "hide", and "inventory".  Default is "show", I use inventory if I load up an old save game and forgot what the character owns or is trained in.

* All achievements are reachable regardless of your character's gender or origin.  What will block achievements are what interests you select in game.  Early on you select between "art", "science", "outdoors", and "community" main interest.  This affects access to certain dialogs and achievements.  Getting all achievements means playing through 4 times, once per interest.  There is also a point where your character can select their sexual preference.  Picking gay male, hetero female, or asexual, pretty much blocks access to all sex scenes and romance scenarios, but you can still finish the game without it, but not the achievements.

* The rules regarding first and second month checkpoints are documented in the game, but stuff that happens in month 3 or the date Ariane scenes are not so well documented.

List of things I will be doing (besides the usual bug fixes, and the above mentioned tweaks):

- Make a demo of the first month of the game, complete with audio, achievements and trailer.
- Make an optimized android version.  The current version is a PC port, cuts off text, and runs really slow on my samsung phone.
- Make hints and walkthrough pages for all achievements and undocumented rules.
- Make bonus content for completing all 70 achievements.  Sorry, this beta currently has no reward for that, but it will be done before game is final.  (BTW, the planned bonus content will involve "shout outs" to Patreon supporters of all levels, if you want to make sure you are included, or would rather not be included, tell me here or on discord.)

Enjoy!  Constructive criticism welcome and encouraged!

Just finished my first full play through. I really enjoyed the first 2 months and the variation of pathways you can take. But the 3rd month is a little too political for my liking. Had no issues with the views as i’m pretty left leaning. Other than that, I’m very impressed with the final product. Great work!

Yes, you are reaching the "good" ending then as far as the story is concerned Given the title "hopepunk city" I follow the conventions of the hopepunk genre and have endings that are "hopeful" rather than "happy". Basically it is happy, but with a last second twist to say "but not that happy". Two former enemies coming to an agreement is the "hope" part, but there is obviously lots of work to do. The sex scenes are indeed part of the "good ending" that can be missed, and the requirements are probably too high. I'm actually working on an update right now to nudge those requirements down a little. It is tough for me to judge if my games are too easy or too hard, because I go in knowing all the answers. That's why feedback from players is important.

Im mainly getting the ending where a water war breaks out if that is what you mean. However i never saw the ariane date or any other sexual scenes, which could be considered a part of the happy ending i guess.

If you are getting to the ending with the signing ceremony, that is the "good" ending. Yes it ends on an ironic twist, but that is why it is "hopepunk". But if people are finding getting to this ending is too hard without a walk through, this is what I need to know -- it means the game is balanced too hard. The main ending requires that the "like" level should be at 36 for all 3 roommates. "Easy" mode it is 30. I could split the difference and set "normal" to 33 if the current normal is too high.

Thanks for the tip! I played many tries and managed to skip the bad ending i was reffering to. However im still not managing to get a good ending. Still only getting endings without a happy outcome. Any more tips? This is really a great game tho!

I'm going to start rolling out "Case files", my new term for walk throughs. First up is the date with Ariane, but the secret third checkpoints in month 3 to get to the good endings will be my second.

Ariane Barnes

Well, still only the "bad" ending after a couple playthroughs, but I have racked up 30 achievements! It's pretty darn fun. And there seems to be a TON of variables, so I'm thinking replays won't be a chore, as can sometimes be the case in games where you're striving for "100%". I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with how fully-formed the world (or at least the city) feels. Nice work all around.

I just sent you a link via Patreon message.

Ariane Barnes

I tried to search for the game and it’s not showing up. I searched Hopepunk city, developer arianeb, and tag visual novel and it’s not showing up in the searches.

Not sure, that would be an itch.io issue. I can send you a direct link. If anyone else has an issue with itch.io download that is not itch.io account related, I can generate one time keys and message them via patreon.

Ariane Barnes

When they to connect my account it comes up as Your session doesn’t match. Please try again. I have already linked my newly created itch.io account to my Patreon account. Is there something I am doing incorrectly?

Chung-Yeh Hsu

That is probably my first write up. It is mostly about the "likes". There are two key choices made at breakfast in month 3. Rachel's sister must be "go by car", and Maya's coucil issue is "get involved", but these options will only be available if likes for certain characters is high enough. It is a stealth third checkpoint.

Ariane Barnes

Enjoying the game so far! Do you have any tips on how to get the ariane date for example and the happy endings? I always get the "bad" one.

urrhh600

Bah! I was afraid of that. OK, I changed status from "Draft" to "Restricted". Try it now. (It won't let me test)

Ariane Barnes

hi the link that you've posted keeps on telling me "invalid project" when I try to connect with my account
