Re: Whether the elemental effects are actually happening - No, they're canonically still just for the audience. Hence why Gyokko says its LIKE the area is being enveloped in mist. In actuality the Mist Hashira's technique is just standard anime "I've only been chasing his afterimage!" bullshit
