Actually he isn't really a vigilante [Superman] Why Superman is not considered a vigilante? Unlike Batman, whose crime-fighting activity is still technically illegal despite the unofficial endorsement of the Gotham PD, Superman does everything as he is some sort of public officer: he patrols cities in plain day, arrests suspects of felonies and he is even openly summoned by politicians, generals etc. That being said, does Superman has some official role granted to him by the US Government (or other governments considering he operates on a global scale)? Let's not forget that Superman (when he is not in his Clark Kent identity) is still undocumented: nobody officially know his birthplace, family and home and thus it would be quite difficult for hime to receive some forma recognition. This could appears irrelevant for an invulnerable flying alien, but let's not forget that Superman always makes a big deal about being compliant to laws and rules. Also, vigilantism is the act of enacting "justice" without the legal authority to do so. But that isn't really what superman does. Stopping a violent crime in progress and handing the criminals over to the proper authorities isn't vigilantism. Taking it upon yourself to punish them is. Superman doesn't take justice into his own hands. He just saves lives and lets the legal system decide guilt and punishment. Why is Batman a vigilante and wanted by the cops, but Superman isn't? Because Superman, unlike Batman, likes to work in the open. His tactics do not rely on fear and intimidation as do Batman’s because Superman on his own is an army. He knows he practically unstoppable. Not only does he apprehend criminals, but he also helps the city solve some of its seemingly impossible like catching a falling problems such as preventing a falling plane from falling on a crowd of people in a stadium. Batman, on the other hand, prefers to work in the shadows, preferably, at night. This gives him an advantage because people, in general, are easily startled at night. He’s also rougher on criminals due to his own personal background. Coupled with the fact that in some comics, few people have seen Batman, and since people fear the unknown, he is considered a vigilante or sometimes a specter- a myth or something unreal. Thats why cyborg asked him, “you’re real?”, and he responds, “I’m real when it’s useful.” A vigilante is someone who takes the law into their own hands and answers to no one but themselves, and that’s what Superman does The only differences are that Superman has powers and Batman doesn’t, and Superman does his heroics in broad daylight for everyone to see and praise him cuz he’s all smiles 9 times out of 10, plus people see him as some sort of All American crime fighter which makes sense since he’s wearing America’s colors, which is why some people call him the Big Blue Boy Scout Batman does his heroics in the shadows at night only being praised by the people he saves and the GCPD, instead of being praised by the whole city everytime he shows up and since he wears dark colors he’s called the Dark Knight, not to mention that he wears a mask and never smiles as opposed to Superman who shows his face and grins from ear to ear So if you really think about the entire Justice League is just one giant group of vigilantes, save the ones that actually work(ed) for the Government like Captain Atom, Green Lantern (John Stewart and Hal Jordan), etc
