Screwdriver Update!
Added 2020-08-18 22:15:58 +0000 UTC
Hello my children,
The screwdrivers are closer than ever. New CNC machines have been procured and coding is finished. Material choice and design have also been finalized. Butthole is fully clenched because I may be in debt now for the rest of my life.
I am making about 100 large screwdrivers available to Patrons only very soon.
The only catch is that I won't be putting any handle scales on or hardening these ~100.
I want you all to finish them in any way you want! I will use your finished screwdrivers as examples in the YouTube launch video.
If you don't want to do that, you can always wait until I sell them fully complete, but they will obviously be at a higher price.
These are made out of 1144 steel which means they are very very easy to harden. If you have a blowtorch and vegetable oil, you are done. You do not even need to temper it after hardening and there will be virtually no warping.
I will provide a template and brass pins for the handle scales, should you choose to make them out of any material.
I have had many people contact me with their ideas, and that makes me super excited to see what you all come up with!
That's awesome! When will they be available do you think?

Hhhmmm... Looking at that space for the scales & wondering if it'd be worthwhile to try & talk Peter Brown into dipping something silly or inappropriate for scales...

I REALLY like this idea actually... if you made a video with the release of these with no handles, and demonstrated how to make the blanks, shape them, etc. like go into detail as though you were teaching students, i would buy into this hard. learning to make handles is something i really want to learn as a lot of the tools i like to work with and restore myself are similar in their handle design. and that's one of my major boundaries in restoration. I don't know what woods I should use, finishes, etc. there's plenty out there on shaping, but what about the nitty-not-so-gritty parts? I'd say this is a good opportunity to teach.

Ooooh.....Maybe another collaboration with James from Wood by wright to see what he does with handle?!? Very excited to get involved with this. I will start looking in the hardwood small off cuts bin 👍👍

How does my money disappear and how much of it goes where?
2020-08-19 14:35:06 +0000 UTC
Do you know what wood were the origial scales? I would just go for stained maple or beech. Also, why are the pin holes slots not holes? Is it to accommodate my rubbish drilling skills?
2020-08-19 14:17:46 +0000 UTC
Hahaha, they can eat screwdrivers maybe?

I could buy two and have him make some custom handles for you, send one back. You can find him as “Green Beetle” on YouTube. He’s a good friend of mine. I could have him harden it and make scales.

I'd suggest maple or birch (because it's light-colored and durable), and dye it after shaping so you don't have to try to get the dye to penetrate the whole volume.

I just remembered a piece of rosewood burl given to me by a good friend who grew old before he was ready. Time to slab-off a bit an see what I have!

Can't wait, would laminated hardwood/exotic hardwood scales be too plain? (like the layering of skateboards)

2020-08-18 23:05:29 +0000 UTC
I may have to wait. I would love to be part of the scale design, but I am afraid that I wouldn't finish in the timeframe given. To much going on. (School is starting here.) If there is an extra, then let me know and I will complete one. Even if I do complete one, I still NEED to get one of your final production ones, so I will be ordering another. Thanks again. Oh yeah, my wrench is on its way. I'm probably over excited. But, I like Christmas early.

Here I was thinking these were interesting but I didn't need a giant short screwdriver and thus was going to wait until the next size came out, but that "build your own" project is enticing enough that I'm going to have to go ahead and get one.

Don't know for sure yet until we know the actually machining time in the real world. Probably around $50.
