1900s Pedal Metal Lathe [Restoration]

Wood by Wright bought two of these lathes for us to work on together!  Narrated video coming soon (if my computer behaves).

I finally fixed it, haha

Hmmmm, I have to agree about the chuck, that something is off by a tooth. If you look at the video from about 8:59-9:04, it appears that before disassembly, both jaws were protruding the same amount. There's also a great frame at around 9:23 that shows both jaws flush with the chuck body at the same time. I assume that center threaded part is a single-start thread? Did you try flipping it around 180 degrees?

Check again.

I'm getting a message that the video is unavailable because it is private?

I think you have assembled the chuck with one side off by a tooth. Reassembly trial and error will be painful, but rewarding. I also support your anti-orange movement!!

Chuck Kirchner

Doh! I should have written “Black is the New Orange.”

1. Restoring this beautifully conceived and constructed creature must be your reward for working on that horrible power hacksaw. 2. Loved hearing the grunts and comments as you two disassembled. 3. Yes, orange is bad. Thanks!

That's what I thought too when I was putting it back together, but it would just always go back to looking like it is. One jaw was always the odd one out.

Hand Tool Rescue

Looks like you may have the jaws out of time by one tooth on the chuck. It can be a pain to get a modern 6 or 3 jaw lined up sometimes that thing looks like a real bear.

If you follow me on instagram, I am going to be confirming the RPMs with my tachometer.

Hand Tool Rescue

Wow! Nice job! How many RPM's do you think you got at full speed?
