Apothecary Diaries Episode 21 (EARLY UNCUT ACCESS)

Comments

I don't have a sister, but if I did, Lihaku is the kind of bro I'd want to introduce her too. He's not the sharpest pencil in the drawer, but damned if there isn't anybody that tries harder and means it more.

Alex Hencher

This is my favorite unimportant episode of the series. Maomao and Jinshi banter is always fun, but Lihaku is my favorite Himbo, and it’s adorable how much he loves Pairin.

Cody Jones

Flexie, don't ever worry about talking too much. I'm sure I speak for all of us in saying that is the reason we're here. Your insightful commentary is a joy to behold.

Buzzard

Lol, it's not like default labeling everyone straight is better now is it? Labels are designed to help people describe experiences they are already having, there's nothing limiting about trying to pinpoint why your experience is different from others to better understand yourself. Labels for sexualities aren't some box you're trapped in forever once you use it, they can change and evolve as you learn more about yourself. Asexual and aromatic people saying "hey neat, I relate to this character and she reminds me of myself" aren't hurting anyone. Chill out.

Allegra

While what you're saying is true, that labelling yourself limits your own view of your own possibilities, both aromantic and asexual are being recognised and actively studied by medical science. As of now the prevailing consensus is that aromanticism is a subset of asexuality, although this definition may change in the future as more research is done. Both asexuality and aromanticism together are believed to have prevalence rate of around 1%, which doesn't sound like much, but it's still 1 in 100 people, so globally speaking it's not a small community by any means. Denying their identity might seem like a common sense thing, but it is not doing anyone any favours. Humans love to label and categorise things, including ourselves. It's how we make sense of the world. For example, if we didn't have categories, we wouldn't have distinct species. After all, there's no one point where one animal remains one species, and their offspring becomes the next species. They are as similar to each other as we are to our parents, and that holds true for every generation of every animal, so where do we get distinct species from? Nothing but categories and labels. And I know you want what's best for the youngsters. You definitely mean well, and I appreciate it. But sometimes what's best for them isn't necessarily what we want for them. Sometimes they know best, and we are just tired old dinosaurs. And by the way, a chicken is scientifically speaking a dinosaur. It's true, look it up. So if a chicken can be a dinosaur according to science, why couldn't a person describe themselves as aromantic or asexual if that's what lets them make sense of the world, and ultimately, be happy with themselves?

The obsession you seem to have with trying to put other people down for no reason frustrates me. What's creepy about "labeling everything" if it doesn't affect you at all? Nobody is holding themself down by labeling themself, they're just trying to communicate their experience in life. Don't be too quick to insult other peoples beliefs just because they don't line up exactly with your own, learning from each other is the point of being human.

Eric

This obsession you younger generations have with labeling and categorising everything just creeps me out. People like who they like, or they don't. Labels only matter to people not directly involved, who have no need to know. Don't be too quick to limit yourselves with labels or you'll miss your possibilities.

So as far as I know its never been stated canonically but in Asexual and Aromantic circles MaoMao is considered to be a pretty good representation of both orientations. Her lack of romantic feelings line up with the aromantic side and her lack of sexual interest lines up pretty well with what asexuals feel. So while she is more than likely straight a lot of folks in the ace/aro community see themselves in her

Ben

spectre has the correct assessment.

Cyber

If Maomao got publicly acknowledged by Lakan as his daughter then it would count, but since that hasn't happened, she has no status.

SpectreHarlequin

Mao still thinks he is a eunoch. So why should she waste time on him.

Morgan Hellström

The miscommunication scene between Jinshi and Maomao is a pretty common trope in Japanese joke telling because it is natural to imply the subject of a sentence without explicitly saying it. Regardless it was done quite flawlessly given the current dynamics between the two.

Tabo51

The writing this season is phenomenal. Lakan is such a fascinating character. I'm looking forward to your reactions regarding him and his relationship to Maomao.

Jon

yes it does.

Cronshaw

Living for these uploads atm.

HollowedSlayer

This is one of my favorite epsisodes. Did anything twist the plot? No. Did we see the big dumb golden retriever boy show his integrity? Yes. Lihaku is one of my favorites, so sweet, so in love.

AttackRunRepeat

This episode is hilarious. Maomao is so unaware and Jinshi so distressed 😂🤭

victoria t

This my be my favourite episode, not just because it's hilarious, but also because it allows some of the goofy side characters to be complex and nuanced, which makes the entire world seem more real and alive.

Scarmath

My assumption is that since she's a bastard child that doesn't count, unless maybe she was brought into his household and more or less re-adopted, which clearly she has no interest in (not sure how the depicted culture considers such cases).

Mikael Hultman

The one thing that I wondered is that so it seems that Jinshi is in some way related to the emperor, but it also seems that Maomao is the daughter of Lakan, the Grand Commandant. Doesn’t that make Maomao the daughter of a high-ranking official?

Alex Chen

In Mao Mao’s defense she don’t owe Jinshi more explanation he’s just her boss and she is off the clock

John Longoria

Always a good way to start the day. You definitely chose right by planning to watch the end of the season in a single week.

Ryne

Good start of my day 😁
