DEATH NOTE Episode 25 (Early Uncut Access)

Episode 25 | Silence

Comments

I have the same thoughts. I know that Light ultimately won here but L was always just one person with no superpowers or insight into what the power is and how it works. He was right from the very beginning so I felt devastated in this scene when I first watched it like 14 years ago.

Kate

I feel like L knew he was defeated ever since they were in the helicopter. But its crazy to me that L had the right person since like ep 4 or something like that he just didnt have any proof. He went against 2 killers with basically super powers, 2 Shinigami, and still had the right 2 people accused all while staying within the law. Im not discrediting light, light played all his cards perfectly too but L was just insane

And the academy award goes to LIGHT YAGAMI for hes performance

Okay Flexie, after you finish this.m if you ever watch Bakuman (and you should, it's made by the same people that made this.. its almost autobiographical.. you get insight into how the author originally intended for this manga to end) please check it out later. Don't even gotta stream it. You won't be upset.

the true final episode of death note

Ricardo Machado

Personally I prefer the second half because Rem is dead, but hey...I can see why most people wouldn't.

Lighto San

To quote Arnee7 right below this one... "It was Rem. And why was she so quick about it? She shouldn’t have been concerned about Misa’s lifespan. As someone pointed out in an earlier episode, Misa already has an extended lifespan thanks to the Shinigami that sacrificed itself for her. Even if she made five Shinigami Eye deals, I feel like she’d still have a normal lifespan left. So, in conclusion: L was cheated." And honestly, even if what you said was true (that Rem *had* to kill L)...why would that be a good thing? That means that Light lost the battle with L and all he had to do the whole time was to deliberately lose so that his cheat code could do his dirty work for him. In other words, it undermines *ALL* the back-and-forth between L and Light up until this point...all the mind games...just so that in the end it's an "Hey Rem...can you kill L for me?" "Yes. Sure. Why not?"-situation.

Lighto San

"She shouldn’t have been concerned about Misa’s lifespan. As someone pointed out in an earlier episode, Misa already has an extended lifespan thanks to the Shinigami that sacrificed itself for her." Wow, I have realized everything else you said here before except this part. That actually means that L dying here by Rems hand isn't just extreme convenient writing...it's also a plot hole because Rem *shouldn't* have had to kill L right here. Why did she feel the need to protect Misa? Maybe the Shinigami who died for her had a lifespan of 2 months left...which would arguably make sense because he was so obsessed with Misa that he didn't do his work (writing names down). But it would've been nice knowing this, you know...also, L dying by the hands of Rem 100% certainly ruins most of the back-and-forth between Light and L...because you realize that Light never had to be smart. He just had to deliberately lose to L so that his cheat code Rem could do his dirty work for him. It's the reason why Death Note fell from popularity (especially within Japan). What was Lights big plan during the last episodes about if it all boils down to "Hey, Rem...could you kill L for me?" "Uhm...sure." Also, keep in mind that they *completely* rewrote this series of events BOTH for the live action series (not the Netflix one, the actually good Japanese one) and the movies...which means they know that they completely screwed up here. The episode itself is amazing with all the imagery, the atmosphere, the emotions etc. But...the logic? It ruined Death Notes reputation in 1 swoop...

Lighto San

I...don't know why you feel the need to reply with "I ain't reading all that". Like, just say nothing at all instead of throwing out a childish response which reveals your low attention span? Besides that look above my comment. Arnee7 wrote something very similar. It's obvious that this episode triggers something within people...because it actually is the episode which ruined Death Note's popularity as a series. Also, I don't need a reference page...you just need to use your brain to see the logical flaws within this episode. *But* Big Joel made a video about this topic on Youtube titled "How Death Note Got Bad". I disagree with some stuff within that video but it still showcases how this episode ruined the anime (and manga), especially due to the positive feedback he got.

Lighto San

L's massaging Light's feet context: How it symbolically stays morally ambiguous, making the implications that Light is God now, and also a traitor. Because L's "it's the least I can do to atone for my sins" line is him accepting Light's God status, and it's suppose to also simultaneously make L like Jesus, because Jesus washed the feet of Judas just before Judas had him die. L also knows that while Light could just keep winning and keep beating everyone who tries to stop him, there's people who are ready to take Light on in his place, similar to how Jesus knows he's going to die, but is content knowing that this is all according to God's plan, and that ultimately nothing is lost.

Hey Flexie, great reaction as always! I just want to mention that the next arc might not be as good as this one. Here is a theory that Ohba and Obata (the authors of Death Note) were forced to continue the manga after L’s death (which coincides with episode 25 of the anime). The huge difference in quality in the L Arc and the next Arc is the first obvious tell. And this is something you see in manga all the time, especially from Shounen Jump. Whenever these series keep going past when they were originally intended to end, you see a huge dip in the quality of the story-telling. The author is just not prepared, and/or no longer has his heart into it when forced to extend the series by his editor. Even more telling is Ohba and Obata’s next work, Bakuman. In Bakuman, Ohba and Obata tell the story of Ashirogi Muto, a team of manga writer and illustrator trying to make it big in Shounen Jump. They are obvious stand-ins for Ohba (writer) and Obata (illustrator). In Bakuman, Ahshirogi Muto brings up the issue of mangaka being forced to continue stories way past when they intended them to end, which is typical of a hit Shounen Jump work. To combat this, they decide to create a hit series that is uber popular, but make it a point to end it at a definite point instead of letting it continue endlessly. Ashirogi Muto even complains about those the problems of being forced to continue the work (story is half-assed, no longer feel like doing it, etc.) It should also be noted that after L dies in the manga and concludes that story arc, the Death Note manga took a hiatus for 2 months because it was pretty clear that Ohba hadn’t plotted the series beyond that point. But the editors wanted them to continue the incredibly popular manga, so they moved into a new story arc. But I am not saying that it's nessesarily bad from this point :)

Flexie: I want KIRA back. Kira: Be careful what you wish for.

Raunak Xrestha

L wanted to disprove the 13 day rule so thus it will expose Misa & Light, so REM had to kill L.

STEVE

Hey Flexie, First off, I don’t really want to be that guy, but while L’s death was incredibly cinematic, poetic, and even symbolic/biblical, I feel like it came too soon. Aside from the episode limit the studio had to work with, I don’t think there’s a good reason for L’s death to happen so quickly. This is my second time watching Death Note—the last time was probably over a decade ago. I loved it then, and I love it now. The characters, animation, dialogue, sound design, and of course, the two 400 IQ giga-chads battling it out for 25 episodes in the most insane and elaborate chess match I’ve ever seen—it’s all amazing. But because I love this show so much (mainly L, and yes, I’m Team Blue—don’t hate, I just think he played the superior game), I feel really strongly about his death. And yeah, I’m biased as hell—sue me. I get that, narratively, Light had to win (plot armor), and I can accept that. I didn’t like it, but I accepted it. But why was his death so short? It happened so fast. I feel like they could have stretched it out a few more episodes. L definitely had more cards left to play that could have kept the game going just a little longer. For example: • When L touched the Death Note and immediately connected the dots between the Death Note, Light, and the existence of Shinigami, why didn’t he keep his eyes on Light the entire time? Light literally had a seizure upon touching it and then instantly changed his entire demeanor. How does that not set off alarm bells? • When Kira #3 was killed after revealing how the Death Note works, plus everything he theorized during the car chase—combined with L’s existing knowledge about Light/Kira—why didn’t L at least suspect that either Light or Misa was back in action? Why didn’t he bring them in for questioning again, now that the Kira they were chasing had just died at the hands of another Death Note user? • And even if questioning them seemed unnecessary, wasn’t it already confirmed earlier that Kira could manipulate both time of death and cause of death? That means Misa could have written Kira #3’s name down before she was chained up. When could she have done it? Maybe while sneaking around behind everyone’s backs—which she literally did just a few episodes ago. That’s when she proved to Kira #3 that she was the Second Kira and completely girlbossed him into submission (such a slay moment, btw). • That move, while cool, also puts Misa in a tough spot. Yeah, she got a confession, but how the hell did she get it? “He’s basically in love with me, so he just told me” is a flimsy excuse. Not bad, but flimsy. L definitely took note of her slight character shift around Light, and he had to have found it suspicious. I feel like there was enough there to at least bring her in for questioning again—nothing extreme, but maybe just bugging her or having one of L’s spies tail her. • And why did no one take any anti-Kira precautions while interacting with a literal God of Death? Why bring Rem home like a pet? Shinigami are probably the worst house pets ever—besides Ryuk, because he’s actually pretty cute. • L interrogated Rem multiple times, and while she was vague, I feel like he could have trapped her into revealing something about the Death Note or her connection to Kira. Considering L already knew that Light and Misa had interacted with a Shinigami before, why didn’t he try to gauge Rem’s responses more closely? If he studied her reactions carefully, he might have picked up on subtle expressions or emotions that could have clued him in. • He also could have offered Rem a deal: a reduced sentence for Light and Misa (the “alleged criminals”) in exchange for detailed information about the Death Note, Kira, or even just asking her to leave the building and stay away. Rem was an independent, unstoppable third party aligned with at least one Kira—she could kill L whenever she wanted. Why wouldn’t he try to neutralize that threat? • The 13-day fake rule(s) plan also felt weak. It was a small failsafe Light thought up on the spot and only had a day to execute before being imprisoned. I know Light is a mega-genius, but even he probably didn’t think it was a silver bullet since it’s so easily disprovable. There had to have been a discrepancy somewhere where Light or Misa waited more than 13 days between kills. • Also, Rem should have straight-up killed Light for breaking his promise to protect Misa, or at least threatened him to cut it out and actually save her. • Did no one compare handwriting styles in the Death Note? Seriously? No one thought to analyze it against other things Light and Misa had written? No one recognized Light’s own handwriting?! • And finally—the part that pisses me off the most—Light didn’t even kill L. It was Rem. So, in conclusion: L was cheated. Despite everything I just ranted about, I still love this anime. It’s one I’m super nostalgic for, and this is one of the only parts I think was a little lazy. I just had to say something. Anyway, if you made it to the end of this stupidly long rant—well done. Thank you so much for reading over 1,000 words of my nonsense. This community is awesome. To Jess, if you made it this far—thank you! Your reactions are amazing and help me relive this anime all over again. Can’t wait for the next one! 😊

So, this episode is a 10/10 in almost every aspect. The rain scene, fantastic. Especially surprising because it's an anime only scene. The dialogues between L and Light...fantastic. The emotion...fantastic. Now first of L is one of the most beloved anime/manga characters of all time. He certainly is in *my* top 3 favorite characters of all time. And I think that's what obviously makes this episode so strong. The emotional impact is insane and couldn't be replicated by most other manga or anime...but simultaneously it's a big mistake because L was a large part of what carried this show. Removing him from the story has been executed extremely well but you also have to write the rest of the story *without* L. That's a big gamble and most people consider Death Notes second half to be...well, a steep downgrade to say the least (that's putting it very nicely). Personally, I prefer the second half (yes, I'm serious) but I can see why many wouldn't and I do have to admit that L's absence is strongly felt from hereon out. But yes. IN MY OPINION the story actually get's better from hereon out and I am not joking. The issue is how this one episode changes the perspective we have on the events leading up to this. Looking at the show as a whole Light actually does have way more luck in comparison to intelligence. It starts with him being lucky that Ryuk told him about the FBI agent. Afterwards he is lucky because he just so happened to be there as soon as Noami Misora tried to talk to L about Kira. Afterwards he became insanely lucky because Rem showed up and becomes his ultimate cheat code. Sure, you could argue that Misa more or less just burdened him but with the benefit of hindsight...it's clearly lucky. Especially because Rem was already in love with Misa. Up until this point Light has consistently had luck and his feats of intellect are extremely low in comparison to L...because L frequently outsmarted him while having zero knowledge of the Death Note *AND* being one of the unluckiest guys within this universe...the incompetent task force being his biggest example of being unlucky... After that Light put his big plan into action...but about that plan...what actually changed at the end of it? L and the police force knew that it's possible to write fake rules in the Death Note. L told them clearly that both Light and Misa were the ones who would profit insanely from this fake rule. But the police force said "Noooo, stop bullying Light! He is a good boyyyyy!"....they literally found Misas hair on the Kira tapes...L suggesting to test out the 13 day rule is the most rational thing which could've been done. ESPECIALLY because the death sentence does exist within Japan. It's this irrationality which is the reason why I personally consider L's true killers to be the police force. If they had the rational response of "Yes, we are gonna do that right now and until this is done both Light and Misa are the prime suspects"...well, Light would've been fu**ed. Keep in mind that policeman are people who are supposed to think rationally, especially in Japan with it's cultural standards. Them saying "we won't do that" is insane. Now, just to get back to Rem... In the episode in which Light met Rem for the first time he asked her to kill L for him. Rem agreed. Now, imagine if L died during that episode by Rem's hand...how would that actually have changed the story? Wouldn't that have been the most anticlimactic ending? The circumstances during that episode were almost exactly the same as this one. The difference is that within this episode we *think* Light won due to his extremely big plan during the last episodes...but actually he didn't. He "won" because L was about to solve the Kira case and Light had the cheat code Rem on his side. In other words...he won because he lost. He won because L was about to become *to* dangerous and all Light had to do was put in the right button combo (cheat code) to instantly kill him. It's like playing a fighting game and giving yourself infinite health. It doesn't take intelligence to ask a god of death to kill your opponent for you. Especially if that god of death is already ready to do so from the get-go in order to protect his loved person. And at that point you realize that all the back-and-forth between Light and L up until this point was basically for nothing. Because in the end...Light didn't have to be smarter or better...he just needed to be luckier. He doesn't achieve anything which puts him above L...the universe just handed him everything he needed. What doesn't help is that the reason for why Rem loves Misa has never been stated. This makes Rem especially feel like a plot device and nothing more... It's the reason why I prefer the second half. There isn't a Rem-type character. Now, don't get me wrong, I do love this episode very much because of the emotions and I do think it's a 10/10 in almost every aspect...except Rem. Rem is the only big issue within Death Notes story and people have actually realized this on mass which is why this episode has been *OFFICIALLY*(!!!) rewritten multiple times (and yes, the mangaka was involved in some of those rewrites and no, I am not talking about the terrible Netflix series). It's the reason why within Japan people don't consider Death Note to be in the top 100 anime/manga of all time. All of it comes down to this 1 episode...an excellent episode which ruined most of the stuff surrounding it...truly an enigma. Like, how can an episode be a 10/10 and at the same time completely ruin the animes reputation? Writing like this should be studied.😅 L not being present moving forward is a *huge* handicap the writer put on himself. And Rem being the one to kill him just...undermines so much of what has happened between Light and L up until this point. Lastly, this comment is not me hating on this episode. I do really love it and I think I have made that clear multiple times. Personally speaking, I enjoy watching it even though I know of the plot issues with Rem and so on. That's how good the imagery and the execution is. This comment is me more-so talking about public opinion and how this 1 episode shifted many peoples viewpoint about...well, everything up until this point.

Lighto San

Funfact: Rain scene is anime only.👍🏻 (still the best scene though)

Lighto San

God I feel so bad for L, he knew from the start that it was Light, there was just no way to prove it. The fact that Light's victory smile was the last thing L saw before he died angers me so much 😭

zontzooit

This was cinema 🙌🏼

Steffy

omg... yeah this is art.

Jessica McCann

This should've been the final episode, honestly.

Neonic Rayne

Agree. Most likely he knew he will die if continue with the investigation, so L was melancholic whole episode. The final evil look from Light when he was holding him while dying just confirmed his theory that light was kira the whole time. Rain scene is the best one.

Jonathan Solis

My goat 😞 The imagery and symbolism this show has is out of this word.. L washing off Kira's feet could be interpreted in the biblibcal sense of Jesus and Judas.. but i also love that for non Christians or non-knowing of the incident could interpret it (like i did when i first saw the scene) as L submitting sort of by resorting to a suicidal tactic like the one he pulled.. he 100% knew Light was Kira.. Also someone else in chat mentioned some verse about bells and that honestly amps the awe factor to 120 😭🔥🔥 Fortunately for me i remember nothing past this point in the story.. so i can't wait!!!

deranged but not really

OOOOOOOO

spectral.mozzarella

L asking Light that question in the rain is done so well. It’s just L saying one last time “I know you’re Kira. It’s just us here, drop the act.” And Light, who would have probably punched Ryuzaki had he not regained his memories, responded exactly the way L expected Kira to answer. Cut to him washing Light’s feet as a sign of submission, finally admitting defeat.

Critical

they really went all out with this episode, the directing and cinematography were incredible :) the whole episode had this dreadful feel to it, perfectly fitting :) poor L he always knew Light was guilty but he couldnt do anything against the supernatural :P Jesus washed the feet of Judas as well :) Misa walking around and singing was like some creepy doll shit :P Light literally managed to kill two birds with one stone, both of his biggest threats are now gone :) this is also the first time we did not get a card with Death Note rules during an episode :) a lot of this episode was anime exclusive too :)

Kisame

L see's Light's face before he dies yeah, but if you notice, he also dies with a slight smile on his own face. He always believed Light was Kira, and with his death, he proved to himself that he was right all along. L mentioned before in the anime as well that he was depressed, and would only be satisfied if Light was Kira. Being right was enough to let him die happy I think.

Ben Stephenson

Yeah the feet thing is biblical. Jesus washed Judas' feet the night he betrayed him. He knew it was coming and he still did it. And Judas let him do it.

Tacosareneat

L hearing the bells is also a reference to the old adage "Ask not for whom the bell tolls: it tolls for thee."

William Morales

L knew that if Light was Kira, he would die after he revealed the plan to test the 13 day rule. Since Light made that fake rule specifically to clear himself and Misa while they were imprisonend. But I don't think he expected to die immediately, I believe he probably expected Light or Misa to attempt to kill him at some point after he revealed the plan. The variable he did not account for was the fact that the shinigami could kill him instead.

Christian F

This is true. Jesus washed all of his disciples feet as an act of humility that he wanted his followers to adopt. He also knew he was going to be betrayed by one of them but still showed he loved and cared.

William Morales

Gary Oaks

He knew for sure he was going to die

I am not Cristian, but some said that foot massage/wash scene is from Jesus and Judas reference. So, you are right that imagery felt religious. maybe someone else can explain it better.
