I love how complex the layers are in this show, and I love how they don’t spell out everything for you. They drop small breadcrumbs here and there to piece together, but you still don’t get all the answers. Big Jinshi reveal here though! Him and MaoMao are literally about the same age, and he is NOT a eunich. I also don’t think his real name is Jinshi based on how that was worded. But idk. I know it’s frustrating that MaoMao is basically refusing to dig deeper into who Jinshi really is, but like you said earlier, she’s removing herself from the situation. The more she knows about people’s secrets and lives, especially the higher status they are, the more danger she’s in. “Curiosity killed the cat” as they say. My theory is that the baby swap was true, and that means Jinshi would be the current true prince, oldest son of the current emperor. I also think based on his inner monologue where he’s like “he just has to make himself a new prince” I think he believes this too, deep down. I don’t actually know though, but I’m sticking with that theory. I love this story so much, I’m probably going to read the light novels after finishing season 2

Gabriella Pinkoski

This ^^^ this is my theory as well! I think the babies were swapped, and he is the current prince, and I’m sticking to that until the show tells me otherwise lol

Gabriella Pinkoski

Another cool thing about the LN is the Anime follows it more closely. Each LN volume is 12 episodes. So volume 2 ends the same place the first season does.

Cronshaw

I started the manga when I finished the anime, then when I had read all that were out I started the light novels. The LNs really helped clear up the confusion.

Buzzard

This is not a show where they say much of anything, the mystery is mysterying

Itz A Dolphin

Definitely agree!!

ValSunshine

Ok here is my theory the babies were swapped so Jinshi is the emperor’s son but for appearance sake lives as the emperor’s sickly brother. If the secret came out the babies had been swapped it would be a scandal in the royal family which is something avoided from other shows I’ve watched about this time period. I feel like Jinshi wants the emperor to produce a “new” heir so he can continue living as the brother and choose what he wants his life to be. Which is what he referred to when talking with the emperor before buying Maomao. I could be completely wrong however lol

ValSunshine

Flexie, the manga is good but if you want to really get all the info which have been omitted in the manga, then I suggest you read the light novel. There's about 14 volumes out and you can binge in the story as much as you want. The manga has only reached the events of vol 4 chapter 18

Lucia Petrozzi

As for the "why" Jinshi is acting as a eunuch in the rear palace, it's something that will be revealed later on. Not yet...

Lucia Petrozzi

I can’t fucking stand this show!! (I’m so invested.)

Andres

Either Jinshi doesn't know he was swapped at birth and therefore as the younger brother of the Emperor, he knows that if something were to happen to him, he would be next in line (as any potential baby boy the emperor may have would be too young to succeed him) or he does know that he is in fact the Emperor's son and he is implying that if the other baby had survived, there would be two potential candidates to succeed the Emperor and therefore that would free him from becoming the Crown Prince because the Emperor's brother would be of the right age as well. That we don't know yet.

Lucia Petrozzi

Emperor's missing brother and dead child, Lakan's shady dealings, Suirei's resurrection, Loulan's poker face, Maomao's mom, Jinshi's identity and assassination plot, Gyokuyou's pregnancy - so many mysteries to uncover :D The plot thickens with every episode.

Milosz Skowronski

I love the quickness with which the voice actor went from crazy laughter to back to normal maomao. It also helps that the VA was also the voice of Tanya the Evil who is completely insane.

Jeff Schaller

To rewatch this episode after the latest one of season two (11) shines a light… and your reaction certainly adds enjoyment to watching it again. Don‘t ever think anything stands alone in this anime.

Alderanex

I recently started the manga and I agree. The way the manga is laid out and goes back and forth really leaves you scratching your head just like the anime, probably even more.

Sarai

As I understand it, any notion of Jinshi’s (potentially) real identity of being the crown prince collapses the entire rear palace system. Every concubine would resent him or want to kill him because then their children and status would be further down the chain of succession. For his own safety (or due to the fiasco/scandal/embarassment? Of the baby swap), I think he is posing as both the sickly younger brother and the eunuch-known-as-Jinshi because the former is further down the line for the throne and not as threatening, the latter completely removed from it but still gives him the ability to walk around freely and exert some power as rear palace manager and as the eyes and ears of the emperor. As for his own desires, I have no idea whether Jinshi is ambitious enough to want to be the heir apparent or if he wants to just peace out and not have to deal with the doubt and all of this *waves hands* entirely.

nordquist7516

But then how would the Emperor having a son help Jinshi? That’s what I took it to mean when Jinshi said that “He just needs to find a prince”, or whatever it was. I thought he was implying that if the Emperor had a son Jinshi would no longer be next in line to become Emperor and that would somehow release him from this situation. I could be wrong. I thought he was the sickly brother who is being hidden away as a eunuch for some reason. Perhaps to protect him, if this assassination attempt really did target him specifically? A new prince would become the new heir so any danger to Jinshi should vanish, assuming the intent is to break the line of succession. I suspect the new concubine’s family is making a move on the throne. Her father is apparently so powerful the emperor can’t refuse his requests without causing a major political incident. Maybe he wants more power and has moved his daughter in to seduce the emperor and steal power through political alliance. That won’t work if there is a legitimate claimant, Jinshi or a new prince. It’s all speculation and this show does like to mislead the audience so I won’t be surprised if I’ve got it all backwards somehow.

Caradoc Elmet

He is either the Emperors brother or son. I say he is the Emperors son, and technically the heir to the throne

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

What makes Apothecary Diaries so great is that it doesn't assume the viewers are idiots. It shows the story without telling you what it means and trusts you to make your own conclusions.

EHelström

This show is very good at saying a lot in a very circumspect manner. It's I think an intentional and very cool device that is meant to mimic Maomao's thinking. It makes for a fun mystery show where the viewer gets to speculate a lot but it can also get frustrating when you want it to be clear. In that way Jinshi is a bit of a proxy for the viewer because he gets frustrated with Maomao not being explicit when she explains things.

Cronshaw

All shall be revealed in time! Everything is purposely vague right now in the anime, but the light novels reveal a lot more. Also Basen is pronounced ,”Bah-sen”

victoria t

These last few episodes are so good. Can't wait!

HollowedSlayer

18:33 Maomao's inner Tanya came out here for a bit xD

moop1789 .

Back with the episodes with Ah-Doh Maomao made the theory that maybe the babies got swapped - meaning that Jinshi is the emperors son and not younger brother. Jinshi in this ep has the same though but dismiss it like MaoMao as being to wild to be true

Sven Hegenbart

My opinion = Light Novel is better than Manga. Not to mention it does go much, much further. And in a lot more detail.

Jan Negrey

23:40 best still frame

stuhlpenner

I really like it you pause so much to try to understand as much as possible! keep up the good reaction

Cryptex

I had a good chuckle when you pouted at the lack of discussion between Maomao and Jinshi. It was a lot to take in, in a single episode.

AGenomeSoldier

I mean Lakan helped Mao Mao get inside that temple.

Jan Negrey

Thank You as usual.

Jan Negrey

Apothecary Diaries right after work is always nice. Definitely a good way to start my weekend
