36:00 I said once before that you need to really pay attention to when Luffy shuts tf up and simply observers, but it's also intensely interesting when he simply TUNES OUT. He knows all too well what's important to those he interacts with and it's really one of the moments that sold me on Luffy as easily the most interesting mc in all of fiction

2025-03-31 02:37:01 +0000 UTCI think that was a perfect Luffy response. Luffy came there for a reason, to get his navigator. He was sensing friction and complications. Nami herself told him to go. So... his response was to lie down and take a nap. Right here in the middle of the road? Mostly Luffy doesn't explain but here this time he explained "I have no intention of leaving the island" and he felt a little sleepy and so is lying down. First, no one can move him. Because why?, because he's just innocently lying down resting. Second, his most important action was not to go. He did not leave and also he did not cause a commotion. Let's summarize. Nami was giving him a hard time. He does not want to twist her arm, also the way he said her name, he was asking what's going on, or rather he understood there was something going on, that there are issues. Instinctively he knew it was important not to leave. Faced with complications, his idea is to wait it out. He's giving the situation more rope, more time. (Corporate executives take notes on how Luffy handles leadership.)

He even berated Sanji for repaying Zeff's kindness by dying for the restaurant. Obviously it's unlikely that what we saw in the flashback, was told verbatim by Sanji, at that moment

He already picked her and already thinks he figured her out and her moral fiber... so everything else is pointless fluff and drivel that won't change his mind anyway. Remember how he immediately picked up on Nami having trauma over pirates, back when he met her in the Buggy arc, and similarly said that he does not care to hear about it

The mental stress of trying to figure Nami and the whole situation out just seems too much for him, so he's just gonna wait things out until they start to make sense again on their own. I also think he senses that Nami is bs-ing, but trying to get her to stop or understand why she does it, is too much for him, so he decides to take a backseat until things clear up and he knows what to do. Absolutely love that about him.

But the fact is that Oda chose a different word, and in this story it has a greater meaning than just friendship. There's a bond of friendship, but also a commitment and even subordination to the captain. As we know, leaving the crew is not something trivial. Anyway, I only thought it was relevant to mention it because Luffy makes a lot of friends, but not all of his friends become "nakamas". English is not my first language, so when I rewatch it with English subtitles following the YouTubers, I find it a bit strange and realize that even natives find it strange at first. See for example how they "fixed" the end of Arlon Park in OPLA (you know the moment I'm talking about).

I use to work with an OP fan-sub group doing type-setting / proof-reading (pre-crunchyroll/horriblesubs days) and the translators at the time explained it to me like this. In everyday Japanese, nakama is such a broad term for just "person your close with" that there is no accurate English translation. That's why, in those old fan-subs they would just leave it untranslated instead of ever trying to apply one specific English word to it. Crunchyroll just chose to make things simpler picked the word "friend" for most of the translations. You might not have noticed because I don't think it happens much in the beginning, but there are times in the CR version where it's translated to "crew mate/member" as well.

2025-03-15 03:20:40 +0000 UTCKisame's not at Arlong Park b/c the Seven Warlords are actually the Seven Ninja Swordsment of the Mist and so he's off pirating on his own island ;) Getting back on topic, we need to remember that Luffy does not know the background of any of his crewmates. We, the viewers, have been shown each of their stories in the form of flashbacks but Luffy was not shown or told them when we were. Man, I really want to discuss this part of Luffy's character more in depth but I feel like I need to stop here to prevent spoilers. Also, shoutout to Nojiko for being a good sister and searching out Luffy et al. so she can shoo them away in Nami's stead. I want to believe that Nojiko noticed the injury on Nami's hand and was able to deduce what happened at Arlong Park.

That is important, because it could cause some confusion. Like when he said to Koby that they would always be friends, he used the word "Tomodachi".
