I think with Luffy's confidence in becoming King of the Pirates, it's the one thing he wants in life. He's like, "I'm gonna become King of the Pirates or die". When you have something like that in your life, you don't really care about what could go wrong. You just move towards your goal, and only death can stop you.

2025-10-19 21:20:51 +0000 UTCThere was a whole conversation about them thinking it was a myth right before you said "is it a myth"

2025-07-23 16:19:09 +0000 UTCPeople sometimes forget that anime is aimed at children. It's shown in the morning in Japan, so it's understandable that Toei would choose not to show a theme like cannibalism to children in the morning.

2025-04-03 12:08:54 +0000 UTCRead the manga. Zeff and Sani's story is much more gruesome than in the anime.

2025-03-27 23:18:10 +0000 UTCI see many people deffend the anime version of the events but I think its kinda coping. The anime is great because the basis for it is great, but changing the leg beaing eaten to being cut off in the rubble is just worst. If you could just will power your way through hunger then the theme of it being scary would fall flat, and the foot having to be used as food, sacrificing one self to care for someone else and uphold their dream is thematically powerful too. Cutting the leg when Zeff would have also needed to cut it off to save himself at that moment, not so much.
Valto
2025-03-17 17:50:31 +0000 UTCIts not as impactful however, since it doesnt follow the themes and its not the same level of sacrifice for Sanji

2025-03-15 05:13:44 +0000 UTCI prefer this version of how Zeff lost his leg then the manga, surviving hunger through sheer force of will is way more badass then eating his own foot makes him feel like a genuine powerhouse. Knowing he gave into hunger and ate his foot devalues his epicness

2025-03-14 00:11:19 +0000 UTCIn the beginning you were talking about how Zeff was saying how he hasn't come across anyone to say that in such a matter-of-fact way. You said maybe it' a good thing he isn't afraid or doesn't know what it will take to be KotP but it's kind of like a Naruto thing, He wanted to be Hokage and he knew the journey to do so would be hard and no short cuts, Luffy is the same way, he just believes in himself and believes in his friends.
Christopher Velasquez
2025-03-13 06:04:35 +0000 UTCI agree with you, but I also think it's understandable. It was pretty hardcore for a shonen. The Live Action nailed that sequence and I hope the remake also shows it

2025-03-13 01:12:09 +0000 UTCYou mean while watching the anime? He cut it in the ocean trying to save sanji from drowning because it was stuck

2025-03-13 00:54:55 +0000 UTCIn the manga zeff actually ate his leg to survive starvation, i wish the anime hadn’t changed that

2025-03-12 20:39:29 +0000 UTCOh, thank you lol. Is that the American pronunciation of Craig? I never would have guessed that! It's Golden Grams all over again lol. Now I'm going to have type in the address bar and find out if this "Kregslist" I've been hearing about on American tv shows is actually, "Craigslist". I'm glad I asked. I like learning about these weird differences between English and American English. Our two languages are similar enough that, despite the obvious grammatical differences, we can communicate pretty easily. Yet it just takes a difference in pronunciation of a single word and I'm completely roadblocked in understanding.

2025-03-12 20:28:52 +0000 UTCYes he is the voice of Konohamaru
Holy Shlapknops
2025-03-12 20:20:11 +0000 UTCTo me Sanji sounds more like konohamaru
Holy Shlapknops
2025-03-12 20:18:43 +0000 UTCIn the Manga. Zeff didn’t lose his leg in the water. He ate it to stay alive after giving Sanji the food. The Manga is way more hardcore

2025-03-12 20:13:17 +0000 UTCYes, it's the same voice actor. She also voices another One Piece character 😊 iykyk

2025-03-12 20:05:13 +0000 UTCCaptain Ukitake said it best. "There are two kinds of fights, A fight to defend life and a fight to defend pride." One of the few things Luffy fully understands is the difference between the two.

2025-03-12 19:13:47 +0000 UTCA little tidbit on Zoro's move-set. Most of them are named after Buddhism ideas. As an example, the "Three Thousand Worlds", in Mahayana Buddhism, is a concept that refers to the vastness of existence, encompassing all realms and their interconnectedness, serving as a framework to understand the rich and expansive nature of the universe. He has one of the most bad-ass move-set names in the show.

2025-03-12 19:04:17 +0000 UTCAs for treasures, the treasure of Chouchou (the little white dog on the island where Buggy the Clown was) was the pet store of his owner.
Dominik.acham
2025-03-12 19:03:52 +0000 UTCIt's not verified information, but little Sanji's voice reminds me of Konohamaru's voice from Naruto.

2025-03-12 18:56:19 +0000 UTCYeah, that Pearl guy has to be my least favorite villain. Like, there are villains that are worse as people, ofc, but at least they are interesting or cool. Pearl, however, is just plain weird and just waste of screen time.

2025-03-12 18:36:18 +0000 UTCYeah, the crux of this show is following and protecting one's dreams and never giving up on them. ^__^ Also finding like-minded friends to go on your journey with you : )

Jessica McCann
2025-03-12 17:37:47 +0000 UTCAs others have pointed out, Young Sanji's VA did voice Konohamaru in Naruto as well as another character upcoming in One Piece. She's perhaps most famous though outside of One Piece as Pikachu!

2025-03-12 17:23:34 +0000 UTC@FlexiejayAnime, what I love about this series without spoiling you is Oda style of storytelling. You get these great characters and a world building experience. Pay attention to everything. You'll see.

2025-03-12 17:19:04 +0000 UTCI'm sure everyone will mention the bit about Zeff's leg, and while I do like the manga version better, in my opinion the change the anime made doesn't really take away from the story at all... I think that backstory is more about WHY he lost his leg, rather than HOW he lost it.

2025-03-12 16:44:19 +0000 UTCLol Craig. The Japanese seem to love using German words as names. Krieg is German for war.

2025-03-12 16:32:25 +0000 UTCHey guys wanted to let you all know that I did look at the Chapter - I was advised to before posting these episodes - and the strange thing is that I ALMOST said "Sanji is looking at Zeff as if he ate his own leg" But was too caught up in the moment! Wish I said something but theres just so much to comment on! lol Now seeing the censorship I get it - and whoa. All I'll say is that I cannot wait to see how they show this in the Live Action. Thanks everyone!!
Jessica McCann
2025-03-12 16:11:50 +0000 UTCCraig (the more typical spelling of the name she is saying) or Kreg as you spelled it, was how she read it before the name was spoken a few times. Loads of people make fun of the "bad guys" or villains of shows, and give them 'funny names', i.e. Shiggy from MHA. Every time she says Don Craig I just laugh and go "would be funny if he got his pirate fleet off of the One Piece Craig's List" and just move on. So I think it's just a poking fun of Krieg at this point.

2025-03-12 16:11:45 +0000 UTCSeeing you so hyped about the episodes makes me happy fr 😄 The further you progress, the more I realize that I’m looking forward to watching them with you even more than the weekly shows on Crunchyroll x) And Pearl is cringe incarnate.

2025-03-12 16:10:13 +0000 UTCYoung Sanji definitely sounds like Konohomaru from Naruto. As lots of other people have said either read the spoiler comment or check the manga to see the difference in Sanji's backstory. The LA goes with the actual manga version where as the anime had it changed.

2025-03-12 16:08:48 +0000 UTCDANG!!!! The other 1 month old.

2025-03-12 16:07:53 +0000 UTCI don't get your "Kreg" joke. What do you mean when you say Don seems like a "Kreg" pirate? What's a "Kreg"?
Caradoc Elmet
2025-03-12 15:23:36 +0000 UTCVA Check! Young Sanji is voiced by Ms. Ikue Ohtani who voiced Konohamaru. She will be heard again later in the series. I feel that this is around the time where readers/viewers are realizing that this is Oda's style of storytelling. He always includes a backstory for prominent characters in the arc (even Chouchou, the dog) to give us context as to why they act the way they do and what they value most. To borrow your words, we are introduced to their "treasure."

2025-03-12 15:16:40 +0000 UTCbaby Sanji sounds like Kono to me idk if it is or not tho
Gary Oaks
2025-03-12 15:12:32 +0000 UTCooo you were so close, baby sanji is konohamaru
Abracalabrador
2025-03-12 15:11:50 +0000 UTCAbout your comment of treasures, you are totally right. The characters in the OP world usually only have their dream or something they value, aka, their treasure. You can see how luffy and zoro are examples of this. They were on their own and their only purpuse is fulfill their dreams. That's why Zoro'd rather die fighting Mihwak than run away, his dream an treasure (Kuina's promise) is the only thing that he has. Luffy more of the same, he values his relationships and his dream. That's why he only helps when he likes someone, if he wouldn't bond with Ussup surely Cat-pirate would take the village, Luffy only involves himself when his friends or his dream is involve. You can see the later in the restaurant, he was quiet the whole time until Krieg said he was going to be King of the pirates, their wills were against each other so he had to step up. Finally, In case you want to watch the live action or read the manga at some point don't read this part: Even if you watch them I'll highly recomend reading chapter 58 of manga, that hits way harder, Sanji sees multiples ships in the meantime and Zeff doesn't loosed the leg like that, they show it this way for censorship reasons. He actually ate it to stay alive :C
Diego Torres Ortiz
2025-03-12 14:59:17 +0000 UTCATTENTION Flexie, the following will be a big SPOILER of the difference between the manga and the anime regarding what happened on the island where Zeff and Sanji were. So read it at your own risk: You saw how he lost his leg in the anime, but in the manga he got to the island normally with both legs. He gave Sanji a bag of food and kept a bag of treasure for himself (like in the anime), but then in the course he ate his own leg so he wouldn't starve to death. It was probably too drastic for the anime, so they decided to edit it. But as it is in the manga it makes more sense as well in terms of him surviving that long without food. If you think about it, if he hadn't eaten anything for that long (like in the anime), he would have starved to death.
Dominik.acham
2025-03-12 14:57:18 +0000 UTCHey, just a small suggestion you may read chapter 58 from the manga so that you will know exactly what was censored in the anime. I hope you read it than learn it from LA.

2025-03-12 14:49:15 +0000 UTCCheck out the One Piece manga chapter 58. Its about the flashback of Zeff and Sanji. One of the many differences between the manga and anime.

hurryupmode
2025-03-12 14:02:19 +0000 UTCSimilar to how Luffy gets his scar, the real way Zeff loses his leg is different in the manga, for censorship reasons. You'll see how in the live action though.
