To me this had by far the most frustrating moment in the entire season. The fact that the writer needed this amount of plot armor to save the villain indicates pretty lazy writing. It also doesn't line up with how well written the rest of the season is, which makes it even more striking. I usually prefer the anime adaption to be closely aligned to the manga, but in this particular case I think it would've been justified to make some small adjustments. It didn't have to be much - just enough to make his escape at least somewhat convincing.
