Santa is a supervillain

Back in (gulp) 2014, I did a comic in verse titled “Santa is a supervillain.” I thought it would be fun to share it today because (a) it made me chuckle, and (b) it’s fun to see how much my art and writing have changed over the years.

And now… the rest of the story…

When that comic ran, I was also offering a greeting card at the time in my store. It looked like this. It didn’t exactly sell gangbusters, but I shipped a few boxes.

I thought that was that until I got this request for a commissioned sketch:

Hello, Mr. Guigar,

My sister thought it would be hilarious to read the "Top Ten Reasons Why Santa is a Super Villain" card to my five-year-old nephew.

When he asked if Santa was a villain, she stupidly said yes.

Then the next morning, when he asked where the chocolate chip cookies (that she had eaten the night before) were, she shrugged. When he asked if Villain Santa took them, she thought he was kidding and said. "Yeah, Villain Santa took them."

As you can imagine, the kid is traumatized now. He's sure that Villain Santa is out to get him.

He won't even go into the bathroom without checking behind the shower curtain, and he's back to being afraid of the dark.

How much would it cost to get a sketch of supervillain Santa pulling off a mask and revealing the Grinch? Or is real Santa taking supervillain Santa away?

And how long would it take?

I've already told him that the card was just silly and that Santa is a good guy, but he's not buying it. After all, Villain Santa took his cookies.

Thank you for any help.

I, of course, did a commissioned illustration immediately, clearing up the entire situation, and shipped it to the family so they could assuage the kid’s concerns.

And now... the REST of the rest of the story...

When I shared this story last year, the person who wrote that letter saw it and was kind enough to share an update:

We still talk about that Christmas even though he’s a senior in high school now. Thank you again for being so awesome.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good fright.

And I still have my cards. They were awesome.

Ha. Who is old enough they read "And now...the rest of the story" in Paul Harvey's voice?
