SHINee - 'Diamond Sky' & 'Stranger' Live Performance Reaction

The song you were humming at around 4:45 sounds like the chorus from H.O.T's - Candy to me. Or perhaps the official remake/cover by NCT Dream. It's been covered a lot.

They're making a diamond in that space in the finger, it actually works better if you put your pointer finger on top of your thumb rather than the other way around lol!!! Diamond Sky is a lovely song. And yessssss Stranger is one of their best songs and also I love the rocker edgy older styling of kpop lol I wouldn't complain if they brought it back. If you want some holiday/New Years shinee stuff here's some links! To elaborate further on the hand sign, it is designed to form the shape of a five-pointed diamond—symbolic of both a diamond ring and stars shining brightly like diamonds in the sky. The diamond is also a symbol of SHINee, with the five points representing the five SHINee members. This motif has appeared in several aspects of their work; for instance, some of their concerts in Japan, like the 2016 DxDxD Tokyo Dome concert, featured a stage shaped like a five-pointed diamond. Additionally, the album FIVE, which includes the track Diamond Sky, carries similar significance: five members and their fifth full-length Japanese album. All of this underscores the deep symbolic connection between Diamond Sky, SHINee, and SHINee World.

Literally Diamond Sky is a proposal song, but it can also be interpreted as reflecting the relationship between SHINee and Shawols. After Jonghyun's passing, the song took on another layer of meaning, as beautifully described by Ni Na. The 2018 performance, in particular, was incredibly gut-wrenching—much like that entire concert. It has long been one of the most loved songs among Japanese Shawols, but it has recently gained popularity elsewhere as well, with SHINee even performing it at concerts in Korea. At this point, it feels like the Japanese equivalent of Korean fandom songs such as An Encore or Selene 6.23. SHINee boasts one of the largest Japanese discographies in K-pop. In fact, up until 2018, they had an equal number of full-length Korean and Japanese albums—five each. As a result, the setlists for their concerts in Korea and Japan are notably different. While they do perform Japanese versions of many of their iconic Korean title tracks in Japan, the majority of their Japanese concerts feature original Japanese songs. Occasionally, a popular B-side from the other language might make it onto the setlist, but this is more common at Japanese concerts. Conversely, Japanese songs at concerts in South Korea are a rare occurrence. The SWC VI: Perfect Illumination SHINee’s Back concert, which featured this Diamond Sky performance, was an exception. A few popular Japanese tracks have also been translated into Korean and officially released. For example, Stranger, originally included in their first full-length Japanese album in 2011, was later re-released in Korean with Sherlock in 2012. Sonically, SHINee’s Korean and Japanese music often differ significantly. Their Japanese discography leans more toward J-pop, featuring a lot of cute and OST-style tracks tailored specifically to the Japanese market. In Japan, there’s less emphasis on outside influences or trends, with music and media largely aimed at local audiences. This approach, while distinct, is one reason why J-pop has not achieved the same global reach as K-pop. When I first listened to Diamond Sky in 2017, I also felt it sounded a bit dated, reminiscent of the era you mentioned. Its demo might actually be older, but I think the sound was more of a deliberate stylistic choice, as the rest of the album doesn’t share that same vibe.

Stranger was originally a Japanese song (little known fact, even IN the fandom, is that it's actually an OST) it was later translated to Korean and released on a Korean album as well.

First of all, Happy new years! SHINee's Japanese discography is actually almost as big as the Korean one, they have A LOT of Japanese songs and in the Japanese tours they tend to sing much more of those.

Diamond Sky has a special place in SHINee World. SHINee were announced back then as the brightest stars - so Diamond Sky to us is our 5 shining stars. It gained even more meaning after Jonghyuns passing. Our 5 Diamonds that will always shine so brightly (in the sky). Them singing this japanese song at SWC 6 Encore SHINee is back - a concert in SK - meant a lot to us. I was at the concert and I remember tearing up. After Jinki's long hiatus due to health issues, seeing them together on stage was such a joy and relief and them singing Diamond Sky felt like a reassurance, a reminder of their promise. It was like they told us: we will always be here, we will always shine bright, we will always be 5. The handsign they make is meant to symbolize a diamond, the space between the thumb and the pointing finger - if you put them together like this it creates a shape like a diamond. At the last concert on the 26th when they sang it and it was Taemin's part he choked up and couldn't sing for a short moment, so Jinki took over and Taemin explained later that he had closed his eyes at the beginning and when he opened them and saw we all had our mobile phones out with flashlights on and it looked like a "diamond sky" and it was so beautiful that he choked up. Diamond Sky is probably my favorite SHINee song ever and it is also the song I chose to listen to at midnight to guide me into 2025. Because this song IS SHINee like no other, to me. Every time there is a poll for japanese Shawols on voting the SHINee top song - it is always Diamond Sky. And that is not only for their group concerts, when Jinki had a concert in Japan in 2022 and J-Shawols were asked to vote for THE song, group or solo....it was Diamond Sky as well..... Diamond Sky really is that special song for Shawols. Unfortunately there is not full video version of Diamond Sky sung by all members (unless you look for fancams) - but this comes close: https://youtu.be/DEZv_e7o-fw?si=-OEr5EFFP6thBooh @ Gucci: there is famous story that Key told at a concert...when his Gucci outfit he chose for a concert was accidentally put on a lighting device and started to burn..... There is no Gucci sponsorship, btw - but since Key is involved a lot in their stage outfits and he has TASTE - it's probably why ;-)
