Bonus cartoon — Mastodon

With Threads launching to 40 million users in 24 hours (and crossing 100 million earlier today), it's the odds-on favorite to be the Twitter killer we've been expecting since Musk took over the company in December. That's bad news for BlueSky and Mastodon. And honestly, it may be bad news for independent creators like myself, given Instagram's history of content moderation.

Apparently Thread volumes are dropping, as would be expected. It looks like it might be a "join to spite Twitter" phenomenon, and we'll see it eventually even out, as people discover it doesn't provide anything new except the spite aspect.

2023-07-23 18:22:09 +0000 UTCMastodon isn't going anywhere. It'll never be huge. It's closer to the old BBS systems I used in ancient times (when 2400 baud was high speed). It is run by hobbyists who are doing it for fun and aren't looking to make a buck. Also, Threads is suppose to eventually support ActivityPub, which is the protocol Mastodon is build on.
