"Match the EYE LEVEL" - Increase the sense of unity between the character and the background -

Hello everyone.

I would like to talk about eye level as a technique to match the character and background. Especially for Vtubers and others where the character is already defined, being aware of the eye level of the background will increase the overall sense of unity.

What is Eye level?

Simply put, Eye level is the position of the camera that is shooting the subject.

Differences in visibility depending on eye level.

Objects above eye level (camera position) show their bottom surface, while objects below eye level show their top surface.

As you can see, the visible area of objects changes depending on the eye level. Now let's discuss how to find this eye level from the background and match it with the character.

Matching the Eye Levels of the Character and Background.

There are two basic approaches to adjusting eye level. The first is to adjust the position of the background to match the character. The second is to adjust the character's position to match the background.

If the character's eye level is fixed, such as in the case of a Vtuber, it is better to adjust the background position to match the character.

Finding Eye Level from the Background.

To roughly locate the Eye Level from the background, you can predict it by observing the visible area of the object as discussed earlier, or you can identify the vanishing point of the perspective and locate the Eye Level from there.

If you know the vanishing point, the best method is to find the Eye Level from the vanishing point.

Align the Character with the Background.

Now that we have found the eye level and vanishing point of the background, we can adjust the character to match that location.

This will allow the character and the background to exist in the same space. In fact, it is even better if you take the character's height settings and other factors into account when placing them.

Another way to express this is by the position of the eye level, whether it is a low-angle or a high-angle.

Note that if the character's eye level is already fixed, moving the background eye level too far will result in a greater sense of discomfort.

Matching the eye level will greatly improve the overall sense of unity. We encourage everyone to give it a try!
