A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

I’d been dying to watch A Streetcar Named Desire for ages and it’s been on my watch list forever, mostly ‘cause I kept hearing about the killer acting and that Tennessee Williams wrote it. This movie’s a lot to unpack, and I feel like I need more time to soak it all in, but damn, it’s a great film. The performances? Unreal. Vivien Leigh is next-level as Blanche, and Marlon Brando’s raw energy as Stanley is just wild, even if I thought he’d be in it more. Elia Kazan’s direction is straight-up magic; the way he captures the sweaty, tense vibe of New Orleans is so good. SO many memorable shots. I wish I could’ve seen the stage version back in the day, but we’re so lucky this was caught on film. Like lightning in a bottle. It’s no wonder it’s on the AFI’s top 100 list! I can see it as a game-changer with its bold themes like desire, mental health, and class clashes, paving the way for gritty, real dramas. It’s nothing like I expected, in the best way possible.

Enjoy

Great movie with great acting and also great reaction to the movie. There are a lot of moves I like that were directed by Elia Kazan Boomerang! (1947) Gentleman's Agreement (1947) an amazing movie Man on a Tightrope (1953) On the Waterfront (1954) One of my all time favorites and you have watched it. East of Eden (1955) A Face in the Crowd (1957) Wild River (1960)

This reaction could not be any better. Fantastic on-the-spot analysis of everything from the characters and the acting to the script and the direction. Was just thinking how Brando, Malden, Kim Hunter and Elia Kazan had been doing this play on Broadway for years. Only Vivien Leigh was the "outsider". I would have loved to have seen Jessica Tandy's original Broadway take on the role, but as Brando said, Vivien Leigh WAS Blanche!
