MARY POPPINS (1964)

Magic week is here!!! ✨✨✨

Excuse my long winded intro! You can skip and sync at 3:34 hahahah or enjoy my rambles🥹

🚨🚨🚨spoilers below🚨🚨🚨

Okay, I’m not gonna lie—while I think this movie IS magical, I couldn’t help but compare it to my all-time fave, The Sound of Music. I know—they're totally different films, made just a year apart, and there’s really no reason to stack them against each other. But still!

Even though every song in this movie plays an important role in the story, I did find myself wishing it were about 35 minutes shorter. I feel like it would've hit even harder for me with a slightly tighter runtime.

That said, I absolutely loved the story! Most of the musical numbers were fantastic, and those adorable kids totally stole the show. Plus, Julie Andrews and my personal fave, Dick Van Dyke, light up the screen every second they’re on it. I LOVE THEM.

What really blew me away, though, were the technical elements, especially for the time. The blend of live action with animation felt ahead of its time—it’s still impressive and fun today. From the chimney sweep dance scenes to the animated fantasy sequences, the creativity and execution are just wild. The effects, choreography, and practical tricks they used make it such a fun watch, especially knowing how groundbreaking that all was in the ‘60s.

Overall, it’s such a cool piece of film history, that I had no idea about. I really appreciate the imagination and innovation it brings to the screen. Makes it shoo-in for MAGIC week!

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you talked about seeing this for the first time as an adult rather than as a child. I was 8 when this came out so I didn't notice any of the filler that I recognize as an adult. I got the soundtrack album after seeing the movie and played it every night for months. I literally wore it out. If any movie can bring out what's left of my inner child its this one. Thanks for the memories.
