Double Indemnity (1944) watch along

#29 on the AFI List

WOW! This movie didn't disappoint! SO much going on, so much meaning in all the SHOTS. I loved how the lighting created so many shadows and an aesthetic, so I see why people love this genre. This movie is way more twisted and racy than you'd expect for the '40s.

Billy Wilder is a genius; he takes this noir setup and layers it with so much tension, wit, and moral messiness that you can’t look away. It oozes style, and the dialogue is razor sharp. It's hard watching this train wreck tbh HA! Honestly, it's a great film, and I think I'll like it even better upon rewatching because there is so much more to uncover.

Double Indemnity (1944) watch along

Comments

'Double Indemnity' is part of that pantheon of film where the movie is better than the book. In fact Caine who wrote the book credits Wilder and Chandler with crafting a much better ending than he had. This movie acted as my compas for my first published novel 'Vulcan's Forge' an SF film noir that sadly came out the week the world shut down for COVID in 200.

To prepare myself for the watch-along I poured myself a glass of Scotch. Since I had to give up smoking, I used pieces of nicotine gum instead of ice cubes. I've decided to call the resulting effect noircolepsy. What a wonderful film. Love Barbara Stanwyck's smolderingly sensual psycho-bitch. Love Edward G. Robinson's smartest-guy-in-the-room schtick. Great writing to get around the Hays Code. Couldn't stop smiling the entire time. My favorite reaction so far this year. Thanks Ames.
