Superman The Movie (1978) watch along

Now this is how you do Superman right. Christopher Reeve is Superman. Sometimes the right actor and the right role come together for absolute perfection. Screenwriters now complain how hard it's to write Superman. Well first I'd say there are some things called the comics that you might want to check out and second there is this little film from 1978 that you might want to check out too for how to do it right. Reeve really sells the difference between Clark Kent and Superman. There is different posture, voice, overall demeanour and the glasses too. Like Kent is always bumbling, clumsy, not very strong and mostly late to everything. Definitely my favorite live action Superman. The mirror scene in Lois' appartment is one of my favorites and really shows the work that Reeve put in to differentiate between Clark and Superman. Superman also has some great one-liners in this one. Gene Hackman is fantastic as Luthor and personally I love that his to minions aren't that bright. Really adds to the comedic aspect. Otis and his Mr. Luthor is just great. Margot Kidder really shines and the spelling errors really add to the charm. Kidder and Reeve are amazing together on screen. Glenn Ford may not have much time on screen, but he really makes a difference as one could expect from one of the greats. I always forget that Mario Puzo was a writer in this. John Williams with his iconic score and the Superman theme is just a fantastic final touch. Everytime I hear the theme I just get the urge to get to the Superman flying pose. It's amazing how well this film holds up after all these years. You still can believe that a man can fly. It's also a bit sad that after Reeve we haven't really had Superman in movies like he should be done.

Plenty of cheese in this one but it was fun watching it again with you Ames! I always thought Christopher Reeve made a great Superman! I loved the opening scene with Marlon Brando! It really captured my imagination when I saw it for the first time. Nice to see Glenn Ford as Jonathan Kent too! Not my favorite Gene Hackman performance by far, but I happened to notice a stuntman in the end credits named Richard Hackman. I thought the coincidence was too much so I looked him up. Sure enough, it was Gene's brother! John Williams was great, as usual! 🎶 Such an iconic score!
