Before Sunrise (1995) watch along

OOOOOFFFFFF!!

I synced off the YT screen record, if you have the criterion blu-ray it’s an easy sync after main CC logo intro.

🚨🚨🚨SPOILERS BELOW 🚨🚨🚨

This is probably not just one of my favorite movies on the channel this year, but one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen. It’s so delicate, so simple—yet in that simplicity, it holds a kind of quiet, undeniable power. The acting is some of the most natural I’ve ever witnessed, every moment unfolding like life itself, effortless yet deeply intentional. It’s a film I would call pure, insatiable movie magic, the kind that lingers in your soul after the credits roll and left me feeling some sort of weird hope (maybe just tingles, I don’t know?) To call it a romance feels almost limiting because what this movie does it transcends the genre—it speaks to something deeper, something profoundly human. Richard Linklater… his direction, this idea. That’s where the magic really happens. Perhaps a leap of artistic faith? He crafted this movie with a seemingly light touch, yet every frame, every pause, every glance carries weight. So many scenes I loved in this, the framing, their looks, the self realizations, the lighting, VIENNA! His filmmaking doesn’t just capture emotion, it breathes it. This one made Ames the philosopjer come out. I hope it makes your thoughts churn—a film that doesn’t just make you feel but makes you reflect, makes you live in its world. THE Acting was so good you guys. Every thought they had I believed, the words where soooo their own. I loved the poet scene, record store booth, the kiss from the tower, wine and grass scene especially with the light and shadow across their eyes. Of course the banter over the fortune teller. I loved the deep insecurities they had, and I am in awe over the “phone call” scene. So many more I’m sure I pointed out in the reaction. I can think of 10 more right now!

For me, this movie is reminiscent of Roman Holiday and Lost in Translation. Packs that same kinda punch. Maybe even more so.

Ughhhhh…. I dunno if my heart will be able to handle 2 more. Will they live up to this one!?NO SPOILERS LOL…

Im not really a Valentine’s Day gal. But, I think this movie is kinda extra special for this Hallmark holiday.

Before Sunrise (1995) watch along

Comments

I first saw this movie back in 1995. I was 23 (do the math lol). At the time, I could see myself in Jesse and I could easily fall in love with Celine, too, despite my preference for brunettes. One of the many things I love about this movie is that you forget that it’s a movie after a while. It feels so genuine and heartfelt which you don’t often see in romantic movies. Too often they are cliched and predictable. “Before Sunrise” is anything but that. I also love the music store listening booth scene. You don’t always need words to express emotions. And, yes, the ferris wheel scene. It’s interesting how for all of the attention and emphasis placed on sex in our culture, that first kiss or kissing in general is like the ultimate rush. That sensation which sends shock waves throughout your entire body and makes you feel like you are levitating. Sex feels like the icing on the cake after that and I love how Jesse and Celine don’t just go at it before they consummate their relationship. I’m a hopeless romantic and I love this movie. I’m so happy you enjoyed it, too, Ames. ❤️🙏

Jesse and Celine forever! The Before trilogy is one of the all-time great movie trilogies. What I love about Before Sunrise is that it sort of feels like a documentary and that it feels like you’re observing two real people fall in love. And there’s no goofy hijinks or silly montages. It’s just two people talking. Everything about this movie feels so real. And while we’re talking about quintessential Vienna movies, let’s watch The Third Man (1949)! 👏🏼👏🏼 👏🏼 The Ferris Wheel where Jesse and Celine kiss is the same Ferris wheel in a very famous scene in The Third Man. And for me, Ethan Hawke’s best performance is in First Reformed (2017). This was directed by Paul Schrader (writer of Taxi Driver) and it’s truly the modern spiritual successor of Taxi Driver. It’ll never win a poll but I hope more people watch it.
