E.T. in the theaters was most first "real" experience at the movies. I saw it three times, and it was transporting, almost religious. I recently rewatched it a couple years ago, wondering if I'd think lesser of it, wondering it it was one of those movies that only a kid could like. But it was still absolutely brilliant. The acting, Spielberg's framing of shots, the lighting, John Williams's score. Just brilliant. (It's so clear how many contemporary filmmakers drew inspiration from Spielberg.) I haven't watched your reaction yet, but I hope that you liked it. Sometimes, for whatever reason, people really don't like E.T. And that's fine, as movies are subjective. But what's pretty annoying to me is that with E.T., they don't just say they don't like it. They take glee in the fact that they don't like it. In fact, they say that "hate" it, and just revel in announcing it, like it's a badge of honor. It's honestly very strange, and I can't think of many other movies that elicit such a response. (Maybe Titanic?)
