Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

I forgot to hit shift before return (again). There's gonna be more. ;)

I kept waiting when the Chancellor died for Bones to say, "He's dead, Jim" The writers really missed their chance on that one. When that Klingon guy lost his arm, I expected him to say, "Tis but a scratch!" I recognize the lawyer, but if you haven't seen ST:TNG yet I won't say who it is. Did you recognize Yeoman Rand from the original series as communications officer on the Excelsior? You know Kirk always gets the girl. We both said "A two-hand mind meld?!?!?!" at the exact same time! ROFL That was a class-act ending. Now I'm done. :)

When will you start your reaction to TNG?

If possible, there is also a Director's Cut of this movie that you've got to react to, and I hope you do, too, because it has a few extra scenes, including one towards the end of the movie, which I will not disclose, so everybody else that's following Ames on here, please don't spoil it for her. The Director's Cut of VI is only available on Digital & 4K Blu-Ray only. Live long and prosper, Ames. 🖖 See you in the 24th century. 😉

Yeesh, you had me getting watery eyed over the end 'sign off.’ I forgot they did that. Brilliant whosever idea that was. And I’m not even a Trekkie!

YAYY JOHN! i loved this movie. loved SHATNER PLUMMER omg i died

Amalia Wolf

I remember when the trailer was this came out. My Trekkie friend, Rob, was so hyped. After the disappointment that was “Star Trek V” although I disagreed with most of its critics, this film brought back Nicholas Meyer who had directed “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”. The analogies between the US and the USSR are evident. David Warner returns to play a completely different character modeled after Abraham Lincoln. Allegedly, Kim Cattrall posed nude for photos wearing nothing but her Vulcan ears. Leonard Nimoy was reportedly furious. I take it he found it illogical. One can only wonder how true that story is…and what became of those photos if they existed.

LOVED the reaction! I saved it for today so this will be the first movie and movie reaction I have seen for 2025. This movie has always been my favorite of all the TOS films. I have also always had a thing for Shakespeare and thought Christopher Plummer's performance was perfect for Chang. I definitely count this as a comfort film for me. Also on a side note I personally love how at the start with destruction for Praxis the fist thought that everyone including myself has is that they were up to something shady when in reality it was all due to simple over-mining and a lack of safety precautions. Such a real life thing to happen lmao. Thank you once again for the reaction Ames! Happy New Year to you and your own! 🖖 P.S. On the subject of Star Trek and Shakespeare if you have not see Macbeth staring Patrick Stewart (2010) I highly recommend it!

So they made peace with the Klingon Empire, but the Romulan Empire is still a threat right? Also the Soviet Union was collapsing right about when this movie came out, that real world event probably inspired the collapse of the Klingon Empire in the movie. I'm assuming.

I assume Sulu and crew on the Excelsior was in the hopes of a spinoff series. For George Takei fans, check out the fan made "World Enough and Time" that he starred in, written and produced by Trek veteran writers Michael Reaves & Marc Scott Zicree. If you can get past the sincere but not pro acting of the fan cast you'll see one of the top trek episodes ever made, with George Takei's best performance, along with an amazing performance by a guest star alongside him. (The show is non commercial and available in full on youtube, I wonder if that means a reactor can do a full length reaction without having to edit it down or require viewers to sync?)

Thanks Marty! I liked how deep Spock had to go, maybe I didn’t expand because I was so in the mo. But he wassssss so incensed. I love when his human side comes out. I think he had to push there because he needed too for answers. Thanks for watching. I was hyped I truly had no idea he was in this. Only travesty is he was covered in SPFX make up but omgosh did he ever have fun!!! love how he took the role!

Amalia Wolf

Hadn't seen this one in a while. Really enjoyed the rewatch and reaction. Especially your reaction to Christopher Plummer. LOL He's always been a favorite of mine and seems to elevate everything he appears in. A little over the top in this one, but it looks like he had fun with it. Someone else mentioned the mind-meld scene and how it was a little disturbing. I've always thought that was intentional. Especially coming from a character like Spock. We really see the depth of his rage. I love how this movie created kind of a bridge to the TNG time by setting up the beginnings of the new relationship of the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Hope you had a wonderful New Year's!!

Interesting BIRD OF PREY grievance! Thanks for the help picking the epis! Loved this so much

Great reaction Ames! I thought this film was a great example of how Kirk and Spock's strengths and weaknesses compliment one another. With Spock's logic and Kirk's instinct and intuition, they really do make a great team! It's always nice to see Christopher Plummer! I thought he was great in The Sound of Music and I've liked him in every film since! He is always a commanding presence! ***** SPOILERS BELOW ***** I enjoyed seeing Michael Dorn as the Klingon defense attorney. In the film, he was playing the grandfather of The Next Generation's Worf, who we've come to know and love (and played by the same actor). Apparently, it was common among Klingons to name a son after the paternal grandfather in the family, so essentially the family line was Worf (the Star Fleet Officer) son of Mogh; Mogh, Son of Worf (the attorney in this film). What an amazing voice Michael Dorn has! The first time I saw Star Trek VI, I was a bit taken aback by the forced mind-meld of Lt. Valeris. It seemed necessary to the story, but felt like a violation. Kim Cattrall really sold it! Ames, seeing your reaction to all of these TOS films has been great! One complaint I have about the Star Trek franchise concerns the Klingon cloaking technology. Ever since Star Trek III, when the Federation took possession of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, you would think the Federation engineers would have long since reverse-engineered the cloaking technology and every Federation starship thereafter would be equipped with one. Nope. Anyway, a satisfying ending and a nice signoff for the original Enterprise crew! It was a good run! 🖖 RIP Gene Roddenberry!

Great job drawing these connections Bubba!

This is my favorite of the TOS movies, my second favorite of all the movies. One of the fun aspects of this one is it's relevancy to the real world being released shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall (the neutral zone) and the same time as the dissolution of the Soviet union(klingon empire) One of the best delivered lines in the movie coming from plummer during the trial when he said "don't wait for the translation, answer the question" came almost verbatim from a UN conference during the cuban missile crisis when the Soviet ambassador was being grilled. Gorkon's line about our generation will have the hardest time living in it also played perfeclty into the cold war allegory.

So many more worlds friend

Amalia Wolf

I liked when she blew kisses to Christopher Plummer 😂

Catchermag

I'm only 30 minutes into your reaction but you said my favorite thing about this movie already: It's Christopher Plummer acting aside William Shatner, and clearly having a hell of a time with the part. Not to mention some nice David Warner thrown in.

Paul Hess

Let's not forget his incredible performance in Time After Time!

Ron

I think the president of the Federation is the dad from That 70's show.

Frankie H

The fantastic actor David Warner plays Chancellor Gorn. He is known to the geek world for many reasons….Doctor Who, Tron, Star Trek (not just this one), Time Bandits. He passed away in 2022.

Catchermag

I didn't like this nearly as much as some people. The story is well crafted, but there's just no threat or tension

Neighbourhood Watch Alliance

Love this movie. I’ll be watching as you are discord live-ing lol I hope this isn’t the end of your ST voyage. There’s so much more to explore!
