Roman Holiday (1953)

Comments

It's waaaaaaay late, like eight months late, for this comment, but I'll give it a shot anyway. You've seen two of Gregory Peck's best performances, To Kill a Mockingbird, and this film Roman Holiday. If you go searching for more, I'd like to suggest three of my remaining favorites: Spellbound (1945),. a Hitchcock classic co-starring the magnificent Ingrid Berman. Twelve O'Clock High(1949), a WWII film about bomber pilots. The Big Country (1958), a Western with seafarer Peck come to the Wild West as a fish out of water, and having to prove his mettle against a rough and tumble code of manhood that is foreign to him. As for Audtrey Hepburn, I endorse some of the selections that have been given already, especially Wait Until Dark (1967) a gripping thriller, and My Fair Lady (1964), one of the top film musicals in cinematic history IMO. Charade (1963) and Sabrina (1954) are also worthy picks.

Until I met my ex-girlfriend from Chile, I said for years that Audrey Hepburn was the most beautiful woman who ever walked the planet. I have always preferred brunettes over blondes. Marilyn Monroe was beautiful and sexy, but she couldn’t hold a candle to Audrey Hepburn. She had this sincerity and purity which always came across especially through her eyes and smile. And, that voice and laugh. As someone once said of her, she was the dream where you wake up smiling. The scene where she gets her haircut is my favorite. How can you not fall in love with her? And let’s not forget Gregory Peck. Fantastic actor. He was a wonderful counterpoint to Audrey. As you can probably gather, I’m a hopeless romantic. Don’t get me wrong. I love toilet humor and a lot of silly stuff. But I am an unabashed romantic and I love this movie.

I knew you'd love this movie Ames. For me this is a perfect movie. I love that they actually filmed this on location. It was either in color in studio or on location in b&w. I'm so glad they chose to shoot on location. Audrey blew everyone away with this movie and rightfully so. Gregory Peck is so amazing and these two are fantastic together. You really believe in their feelings toward each other. Both have done amazing films, but this might be my favorite film of them both. I'd read from somewhere that they didn't tell Audrey what Peck would do at the Mouth of Truth to get a genuine reaction out of her. From Audrey as others have said Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, My Fair Lady, Wait Until Dark are definitely worth checking out. I'd also add Robin and Marian (1978) with Sean Connery as Robin Hood, Audrey as Maid Marian and Robert Shaw as Sheriff of Nottingham. From Peck I'd heartily recommend The Guns of Navarone (1961) based on Alistair Maclean's novel. An old school war classic with a star cast of Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and so on. In the same vein I'd recommend Where Eagles Dare (1968) with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. It also has a fantastic score by Ron Goodwin and is also written by MacLean. Love MacLean's books.
