Children of Men (2006)

Children of Men (2006) Wow. What a ride. Spoilers down below

*********************************************************

I am completely blown away by this film, especially from a technical perspective. It was brilliant. The story feels grounded in truth and plausibility, crafted with genius to give us everything we need. It hooks us from the first minute (a favourite thing to do). It keeps revealing details masterfully - from character backstory delivered through creative and visually stunning moments, to heartbreaking sequences that feel disturbingly real and close to home.

The action sequences are a pure spectacle, keeping you viscerally involved shot by shot. The story is profound, with every frame layered with meaning. A thread of hope weaves through the film and lingers beautifully at the end. This movie did everything right for me. You know I'm a sucker for good sci-fi! There's nothing quite like watching a great film from beginning to end. Clive Owen was phenomenal, supported by an equally incredible ensemble cast. This one will stay with me for days. (Sorry if I'm rambling I nmy outro- it WAS 1 AM when I finished!) Thanks for voting for this one to win.

Let me know your thoughts, as always down below, and let's chat on Discord.

Yes love that about the animals

Amalia Wolf

A truly underrated masterpiece, super cool you watched it! To me all the animals are symbolic of life persisting despite man-made destruction. Many animals are attracted to the main character Theo; in my mind it's like they are aware of his quest and encouraging him to continue.

What a great watch. Saw this film when it came out and was blown away. The world was presented raw and without spin or opinion on top of a great story and great filmmaking. The amazing long shots really make you feel like you're crawling in the rubble with our protagonists. You have some of the best takes on all the films I've watched with you so far. Thanks.

Natas Krad

One of the best films ever made. The cinematography is stellar. And the world-building is beautifully/horribly done. Pull my finger!

This movie is very good, I just didnt vote for it because it's too depressing

Great reaction! I wouldn't have survived through any of the situations in this movie.

Hmm. Immigrants in cages. There's something here that seems vaguely familiar but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm beginning to think that reality is making the term dystopian obsolete. Alphonso Cuarón is a beast. I still get a rush when I see the ambush scene where Julian gets killed. Would love to see any of his films here.

My second full watch. A joint and an olive is an interesting combo. Not a pleasant future. "This is going to be bad. The shit is going to hit the f*cking fan." You nailed that. A minute or two later get the flaming car roadblock and Julian is killed -- I didn't see her death coming that early in the movie. I liked your outro. The visuals, settings, etc. captured a dysopian future so well -- really to the point of being so naturally dystopian (not over-blown) that it "understated" as you noted -- a good way of describing it. The anti-immigrant, xenophobia, and the dehumanization and mistreatment of marginalized people are not so futuristic or at least an unfortunate natural progression.

I had this on DVD, and the Behind The Scenes documentaries are just as good as the film itself.

I watched this in 06 or 07 and it was so unforgettable, that here nearly 20 years later on the second-ever watch, not much was 'oh yeah I forgot'. During this watch it dawned on me that Logan was a loose retelling of the story. Ames please react to Tokyo Godfathers. It's Japanese animated so there's a chance it'd need to be Patreon exclusive - but I was really positively reminded of it while watching this. I'm certain you'll love it.

First of all, what a streak Alfonso Cuarón was on during this period! Y Tu Mamá También, Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men, Gravity, and Roma. All are great or masterpieces with Children of Men probably being the crown jewel. I've watched Children of Men multiple times and can't think of a single aspect that could be improved upon. It’s easily one of the best movies of the 2000's. A fun fact is that Cuarón actually never read the book Children of Men is based on. He only read a synopsis which inspired him to write a screenplay that focused on themes he was interested in. The movie is, in fact, wildly different from the book. For instance, Kee was a character Cuarón made up entirely for the movie. It's actually Julian who is pregnant in the book. There's also nothing in the book about mass migration or refugees. I really wish Cuarón took this same approach of not reading the book for Prisoner of Azkaban. People would’ve been like “Why are there so many caged up illegal immigrants in this Harry Potter movie?!” Also, the car chase is actually several shots stitched together. Me learning that fact is the adult version of me learning there is no Santa Claus
