I know this is an old thread, but I figured I'd watch it with you before The Two Towers. Firstly, I'd like to live in the Florida Keys. Under a palm tree in a hammock with cool ocean breezes, a tall drink with a little umbrella in it, and scantily clad.....well, never mind that last part. NZ is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen (in pictures). But it is one of the most geologically unstable places in the world. Volcanoes and earthquakes there. I think the "outback" is in Australia, not NZ. The guy that played Saruman (Christopher Lee) was big in English made horror movies (Hammer Films) back in the 60s and 70s. Tolkien was very traumatized by serving in WW 1. I think a lot of that is reflected in his writings. On Weathertop, he comes face to face with The Witch King of Angmar, leader of the 9, who he sees when he puts the ring on. Speaking of Elves sneaking up on Strider, you really need to see (if you haven't already) The Outlaw Jose Wales with Clint Eastwood. He gets snuck up on, too. If you haven't seen it yet, you need to see the Rings Of Power on Prime (if available). It gives a lot of back-story to the whole Hobbit/LOTR story. Did you recognize Gimli the Dwarf? I didn't either. I had to look him up. Great makeup! When you said "the path" as they were leaving Rivendale, I couldn't help but think of "a path, a path!" when the Knights Who Say Ni! wanted the second shrubbery. In NZ, they have a mountain range they call (or we call) The Southern Alps. Gandalf didn't have the orb outside of Moria. He must have pulled it out of his pocket? I'm at the cave troll scene. Wonderful CGI! I was thinking "Run away! Run away!" The Orcs in the mine reminded me of the replicators on Stargate SG-1. If you haven't seen this scene of Gandalf at the bride in real life with school kids, you MUST SEE this short clip! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZf0Q-v3u-k I think Frodo felt it the most, as it was his decision to go through the mines. It seems to me all the Dwarf steps go down and all the Elf steps go up. Legolas kind of rubbed it in when he said they went needlessly into Moria. Gladriel is like an Elf Queen in this series. In the Rings Of Power, they made the character into a real bit*h (of course, in that story she's much younger). In the mirror he sees something that I can't talk about until you've seen the end. I don't want to spoil it for you. Those tall statues were former kings, but I think they were saying STOP, Waterfall Ahead! When Frodo decided he has to do it himself, I think it's because he doesn't want to endanger anyone else's life after losing Gandalf. "Tis but a scratch!" I knew you were thinking about it too! ROFL When Frodo shoved off and headed across, Sam going into the water was the sad scene to me. Sam was dedicated to the very end. Since Boromir is dead now, you should watch this clip. This British gal does different accents that are in the UK. There are several LOTR characters and many others you'll probably recognize that I didn't, since you're so into movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyyT2jmVPAk I don't want to talk about the book until you've seen The Hobbit trilogy. Well, it's 4:30 am EDT here. I'm debating starting the Twin Towers now or wait until I get up this afternoon (STAR WARS DAY!). Good day, eh?

I just watched this uncut reaction. In response to your question about how close this film is to the books, I will say that this film is more faithful to the books than the other two films. The main thing they changed is that Arwen was not supposed to be the one who rescues Frodo, and Arwen does not have the power to make the river rise up like that. Her father has that power because he has a magical ring. Also, Aragorn does not doubt himself in the books. Another less important detail, is that the film rushes the story a lot. In the book, Gandalf leaves Frodo for many years before Frodo goes on his journey. The film kinda makes Gandalf seem pretty negligent to let Frodo and Sam leave on their own while being pursued by black riders. The book gives a better explanation for why Frodo and Sam are in danger without Gandalf's help: Gandalf simply does not know that the black riders are looking for Frodo until its too late.

Just love these movies. I have a few small issues with some things, but all in all these are just so fantastic. They held out so well after all these years. Even the cgi looks great apart of a few times. So thankful for Alan Lee and John Howe for bringing the books to life. Just love their illustrations. I know that we can't imagine other actors playing these roles now, but I still wonder what it would have been like if Christopher Lee had played Gandalf as he had wanted to, but was too old by the time these movies were made or if Sean Connery had accepted the role. Lee has such a great voice and I just love the way he delivers his lines. Most people hate Saruman so much, but I can't help but love everytime Lee comes on screen. He is just at home whether it's here or in Star Wars and delivering the dialogue like he really lived in the universe. Lee read the books every year and told McKellen when filming that he had always wanted to play Gandalf, so no pressure Ian. I wish they had given him his own commentary track to comment on the film and the books. It was so great that he was able to play Saruman before his fall in the Hobbit films. I wish that he had narrated the books, but alas that didn't happen. He did narrate The Children of Húrin. These three movies have perhaps my favorite movie scores. Howard Shore's music is just so great and really helps create this world of Tolkien. The amount of effort it took to bring this wolrd to life in all the departments is just mind blowing. It was so great to watch the excellent behind the scenes materials when they came out on dvd. Just made you appreciate the attention to detail in the sets, costumes and so on. Can't wait to see your reaction Ames to the next two movies of the trilogy. In Two Towers we get the late great Bernard Hill. He did such a fantastic job as Théoden and who could forget the amazing Brad Dourif as Wormtongue. Dourif is just a fantastic actor. I just wish we had more Galadriel in these films, but at least she came back in the Hobbit films. More Cate Blanchett is never a bad thing.

The first scene i watched was bilbos party but stopped because i had to go to a family bbq, few months later my school gave out some scholastic booklet with books to order i read the synopsis and had my mom buy it for me, i read half of the first book in 6 months. Stopped because i was more an outdoors kid. Then I actually went to blockbuster with my family at the end of the year and got the first movie. watched it the next 2 weeks were watching the other movies and my little brain forgot about the books until a year later when i was bored found the books and read them been rereading them once a year for over 15 years now.

My dad gave me these books when I was ten and I’ve never looked back. We watched the films on repeat day after day when they came out on dvd, and my fellow nerd friends and I went to see them in costume. I may have to wait so I can marathon them all. I’m debating. 😂

A 3-pack of tissue? I'm assuming one per film. Good call. Read the books several times before any film adaptations. Went to the Ralph Bakshi animated version on opening night not knowing it was part one with no part two to come. Major disappointment. Cut to the news that Peter Jackson is helming a three-part LOTR and I'm confused. The only films of his I'd seen were Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles and Braindead. Not that I didn't enjoy them, but I had a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that he got the green light from Hollywood for a major production. What a shockingly pleasant surprise this film turned out to be. Yes, purist can quibble about alterations but they nailed the heart and soul of the story. Howard Shore's score is amazing. The cast is amazing. The sets, effects, cinematography ... amazing. I may have a bone or two to pick with the next 2 films. But to paraphrase Ted Kennedy, I'll drive off that bridge when we get to it. This was a perfect way to unwind after spending the day baking cookies for my wife. Thanks Ames🍪
