Starship Troopers (1997)

This movie is Bug Sh!t crazy!

I didn’t realize how much of a parody this movie was! I just always thought it was some Sci-fi action movie! It’s kinda smart and has some of the best 1 liners I’ve heard!

LMAO 10/10 for fun!

Thanks for voting on the poll everyone! Please tell me all your thoughts on this one down below!!

Medic! My favorite movie line of all times.

I really loved the book from Robert Heinlein. The book made the movie look like a kiddie show compared to what the book had! But to be honest isn't that what most books are from movies? IE Lord of the rings? for one? Still loved the movie though!

I have a hard time with this movie since I'm such a huge fan of the original book it's (very loosely) based on by Robert Heinlein.

I did my first watch of this movie about 4 weeks ago and liked it better than expected. So this watch with your reaction was my second watch. I thought the satire/parody of the facist stuff and gore was good. I laughed at some of the same lines you did: "brain bug" and especially "Goddamn bugs whacked us, Johnny." Wasn't just the words but also the delivery. The movie did seem to fit in a 1997 time capsule. I had not thought about that. I liked your reaction. For me, I rank the movie 7/10. "A fun movie...if you can accept the excessive gore and wooden acting." Pretty people and skin, in addition to the satire. I thought the movie did the bugs well. Again, I liked the movie.

You should totally read the Trivia section for this movie on IMDB. It's got some great BTS and extra stuff! Here's my favorite story: In a 2016 interview, Casper Van Dien revealed a funny incident when he was picking up his two daughters from school: "I went by the line at school to pick up my kids.....I drive up to the school, and when I get there there are these six ten- and eight-year-old boys hanging out with my daughters. I pull up in the line, and the boys go, 'Johnny Rico! Why didn't you tell us your dad was Johnny Rico?' And I said, 'What are you boys doing watching STARSHIP TROOPERS?' And they said, 'Our dads made us watch it with them!' Then my daughters get in the car, and my ten-year-old says, 'Dad, were you really naked in STARSHIP TROOPERS?' And I said, 'Yeah,' and she said, 'How could you do that to me?!' Then my eight-year-old says, 'Wait, like naked naked?' And I said 'Yup,' and she said, 'Oh my God, my life is ruined!' That was the longest three minute ride home I have had in my life."

Like Catchermag mentioned above Paul Verhoeven is master in creating layers in movies. You can enjoy this movie on a superficial level, the action, humor, love triangle and deliberate cheesiness, but he puts some extra meat on the bones . Would you like to know more? Verhoeven is obsessed with certain themes, war being one of them. So he puts anti-war elements in his other movies if it fits. In this case pretty obvious references to propaganda and fascism. He actually tells a story behind the main story. So lot's to take away from his movies. Would you like to know more? Before he came to the States he already made some critically acclaimed movies in The Netherlands. Including Soldier of Orange, one of the best movies about the resistance during WW2. Sadly most of them are not easily available for international viewers. He did however return to Europe after the turn of the century. Would you like to know more? He made Black Book in 2006 (7.7 IMDB) which is easily available I believe. A must see war movie also about the Dutch resistance during WW2. Am i biased because he is a fellow countryman? Possibly, but that doesn't make it less true that he made some great movies which might blow your mind! MEDIC!

The more I watch this, the harder I root for the bugs. They're way better organized and not nearly as fascistic. Am I the only person who scratches his head at the way the space fleet is deployed above planet P? They know from past experience they're going to be bombarded with plasma loogies and yet the ships remain bunched together. You're in outer space people. Spread out! I do love the unbridled carnage and viscera but prefer Verhoeven's Robocop as a much more effective social satire. Two performers I'm always happy to see in films: - Michael Ironside (Jean Rasczak) - Clancy Brown (Drill Sgt. Zim); aka the voice of Mr. Krabs on SpongeBob SquarePants

BEST WATCHALONG EVER! So happy you noticed it was a satire since a lot of reactors tend to miss that. I loved how much fun you had with it as well! I watched this when it was released on DVD and have a few times since. This is based off a classic Sci-Fi novel from 1959 of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein. The novel is more about the daily life of Troopers with more focus on the Bootcamp and the schools they go to learn military tactics after. There's only a couple engagements mentioned. It was smart to focus on the battles and military propaganda for the film. There are 2 live action sequels with Casper Van Dien coming back for the 3rd. Those are of lower quality compared to this one and I haven't seen anybody react to them. There's 2 Animated films called "Starship Troopers: Invasion" and "Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars." Casper Van Dien provides the voice for Rico in Traitor of Mars. A fun bit of trivia: Director Paul Verhoeven and stars Dina Meyer and Casper Van Dien confirmed that Verhoeven and cinematographer Jost Vacano shot the co-ed shower scene in the nude themselves, on a dare from Meyer. When the cast was reluctant to disrobe, Verhoeven asked them what the big deal was, to which Meyer responded, "Paul, if it's no big deal, why don't you do it?" Quite unexpectedly, both Verhoeven and Vacano got undressed.

Finished the watchalong. A few things. You mentioned recognizing some of the actors. The blonde obnoxious guy who becomes friends with Johnny and Diz is Jake Busey, Gary Busey’s son. They look alike for sure. Dina Meyer (Diz) has been in a lot but her ‘recognizable’ role for me is Joey’s love interest in a few episodes of Friends (she was in the Play with him). The cheesiness of the lines and actors was on purpose, emulating recruiting films and TV news live reports from Vietnam as well as old cheesy war movies. Definitely a comic book feel to things to pull it all together. Not at all a coincidence that the closest comparison with the Bugs is the Middle East. “If we hadn’t interfered in their space they wouldn’t attack us”. This movie came out before 9/11 but there were certainly events that happened prior that mirror things. Thanks again for watching this. I’m looking forward to Close Encounters!
